USA, Canada / Can a Canadian Female Drive in Poland?? [30]

These days pretty much every illegal alien I meet in Poland is a Yank.

i've only known a few americans in wroclaw and i can honestly say that every one of them had a KP. every one. in any event, sure, they exist here. the difference is, if i may say so, they generally don't stay very long and are few and far between.

Good luck with the arrogance - it's pretty obvious that you've never rented a car in Europe. The IDP is an integral part of the licence if you want to have it recognised abroad

you know what they say about people who assume. just rented a car last month, no probs. american passport, credit card, done deal.

delphiandomine wrote:

but really, it seems as if you don't even know what an IDP actually is. It's not an "international driving licence" at all.

no, it's a BS permit that takes nothing more than a few passport photos, a short application and 15 bucks to AAA.

delphiandomine wrote:

Anyway, car hire agencies may check, or may not.

which goes to show just how "integral" they really are.

Ponder the meaning of the words International License.

oooohh.....your sarcasm.....so biting, so clever.....

there's a significant reason for this time buffer.

99.999999% of all people living in America/Canada will never live in Europe for over 6 months at a time, and even less are willing to drive when they vacation in europe (especially in countries that drive on "the other side") making an international DL completely useless to just about everyone out there.

like i said, how would anyone visiting be able to rent a car. good luck enforcing a law that requires everyone traveling to europe from the USA/Canada to have an international DL.

that means I drive illegally since I still have not renewed the old driving licence and I carry the Canadian one in case I am stopped.

i do the same.

i don't know how it is for canadians, but for Americans, if i understand the laws correctly, you're allowed 3 months?/6 months? to drive using your American DL on a tourist stamp.....otherwise, how else would people visiting be able to rent a car.

one option is that when i drive, i take my passport with me and if i get stopped, i show my passport instead of my KP, assuming i've been in the states recently because i'd have a fresh stamp in it.

funny, i keep saying the EXACT same thing to you often times when you comment about america. you've never been there, and i doubt you know much more than the stereotypical yada yada yada. see, even YOU agree that being there gives you grounds to comment.

i'm commenting about the scottish language OUTSIDE the country and it's usefulness in the ESL world, namely in Poland, and since I live here and teach english here, i can actually comment on the subject.

Delphiandomine wrote:

yep, just like everyone else's. 5.1 million people living in the far north of an island in the far north western part of Europe, you do the math.

ever seen a "Scottish English" school in Poland?

so since we're in the spirit of counting, YOU'RE wrong......uhmmm.....for the 2,302,938 time.

a savvy Executive Vice President once sat in front of a job candidate and saw on his resume that he "had 10 years' experience", whereas the VP then went on to ask, "so, do you have 10 years' experience, or 1 years' experience ten times...?"

I've also seen carpenters that can hammer a 3 inch nail clean into a 2x4 in one stroke, yet another carpenter do it in 5 strokes....

there is also a matter of perspective that needs to be considered here as well. educated, ok, intelligent/clever/smart......maybe a different story.

how "educated" is a native born Pole with a Ph.D. in "Polish Philology".....

is this really a "Polish Myth" though? I mean.....do you meet lots of people that think a native is "always" better?

In my experience, the native vs. non native situation has always been treated as "they both have their uses in the classroom", but never "A is better than B".

Greenlulu wrote:

Poles are dumber than people from the other countries (inferiority complex) MYTH

certainly a myth, but the inferiority complex.....an interesting topic. i teach teenagers quite often and they seem to have the attitude that Poland is a crappy place which i think makes them rather defensive, which is only a natural reaction.

with this generation, the inferiority complex, IMO, is more about them seeing their country as inferior, rather than them as people. the younger polish society, because of TV, internet, the EU, on and on, have far more opportunities than their parents did, they study languages and travel abroad, so they have a feeling that they are capable of being sucessful, yet often times are held back by the country itself.

is their feeling of being held back by their own country for good reason, or are they really just worse off than others? myth?

i have spoken to a lot of solemn looking teenagers in the classroom so......just an observation.

Life / POLISH MYTHS - let's debunk or prove them! [140]

just finished reading yesterday's article on onet.pl about myths.

portalwiedzy.onet.pl/4868,11116,1620000,1,czasopisma.html

i must say, i am routinely amazed at the number of myths i hear in poland, much more than i remember in the states.

now's a chance to discuss common myths in poland and whether they are true or not!

let's debunk.....or prove.....some of them!

i'll start:

-drinking a shot of vodka every day when you visit Egypt to avoid getting sick from the food or water? MYTH. yet it's amazing how many poles have told me that they did it, and they miraculously stayed healthy!!!

-kielbasa is healthier than that "crappy fast food" because it's natural. MYTH.

USA, Canada / Now American men want to marry Polish women for polish papers. [38]

Beatus,

why not get married in the USA first? it's 1,000,000,000 times easier than trying to marry an American here, and if he gets sick of Poland, you'll have your marriage license in America if you decide to move back.

Law / How much does the average Pole have in cash savings? [38]

peterweg, back to earth. mr. weg.....earth is calling....

dude, can we get back to reality here? billionaires??? credit card balancing??? oh come on man. the point is that your bank account does not give you a good credit score, in a normal man's world. i'm not talking about billionaires or credit schemers here, we're talking about 99% of the time kinda thing.....and in that case, no, if you have 2K in the bank or 50K in the bank, it doesn't mean a good credit score, which is the point of my post.

good credit comes from borrowing a lot of money, and paying it off on time, not being a penny pincher and stashing away a few grand every year for a rainy day. that would make you a good saver, not a good borrower.

Google is seriously killing the validity of anything written on this forum.
