News / Abortion still under control in Poland [2986]

Herein lies the main argument

That is when life begins it cannot be at any other point. The legal limit (where allowed) is usually the point where the baby can exist outside the woman. Neither of these points are anything to do with awareness.

A woman has the right to choose what happens to her body, to continue with the pregnancy or not is her decision. To argue that it’s not really a baby or it’s not alive or other such things are nonsense with no grounding in science.

I find this whole live/dead argument silly. Without fertilisation there is no possible chance of a living child. Conception is the moment life starts if life starts at a later point I would love to hear when.

History / "Westerner's" most ridiculous beliefs about the time of communism in Poland [73]

Actually the potato part is quite true... even today :))

I'm glad to hear it.........................Bring to the boil the king of the soil as a very good friend of mine says when cooking.

It’s hard to underestimate the negative view the general public were encouraged to hold. In Ireland the brainwashing wasn’t quite as bad as it was in other countries.

"Westerner's" most ridiculous beliefs about the time of communism in Poland
The general view was that Poland was a land of perpetual winter where everyone ate potatoes and queued for bread. There was no night life and you all watched films about blocks of flats and the production of Iron. There was nothing in the popular press or media about culture history or music.

Funny, isn't it, that those pro-'choice' are also the ones who can't agree when life begins, but are fairly certain it doesn't being at conception.

I would count myself among the pro choice people, its such a difficult area. I dont believe there are hard and fast rules that can apply in any individual situation let alone all situations.

The thing about my doubts are that I really can't say you are wrong, I can give my opinion but I'm not certain.

I think we all have our doubts and a very nice post.

The moment of conception is the exact opposite to the moment of death? Its not a process but a big bang.

The morality of ending a life (or potential life) is in the gift of the person charged with bringing the new life into the world with limitations. Not having the pro choice option is just not right. You can only tie yourself in knots trying to think it out...

I don’t like making definite statements about abortion as it’s different for each person and situation.

Life begins at conception statistically it’s usually not successful but that is what the process dictates, life must begin at conception

Where does personhood begin? Not sure if I would say it’s when a foetus can exist without the mother but that is certainly when abortion should be outlawed. Perhaps personhood begins with the mother’s perception about the life growing within her

I believe in the right to life that’s why I oppose the death penalty under all circumstances yet I am not a pacifist and broadly pro choice.

I just get this feeling that when the "unnatural" argument is brought up about homosexuals, abortions, GM foods etc...

Perhaps process and ethics may be a better way of explaining what I'm trying to say.

Some may describe what they view as an unethical process as unnatural.

evolution has guided morality.

I suppose its a bit of chicken and egg situation.... they evolved together.

how we are back to square one?

Discussing the rights and wrongs (morality) of opinions because they are all part of nature.

morality is a process of evolution.

Everything can be a factor in evolution.
If we accept morality as part of nature which I think it is the discussion about natural and unnatural is valid and we are back at square one.

By saying that "Nature doesn't have morality" I meant that there in not a "moral force" guiding evolution.

There's the flaw.......
If everything from nature is natural as we are part of nature that includes morality nature doesn't have morality.

This is a line regularly trotted out by the anti-abortion lobby.

I'm not anti choice by a long shot. I am against those wherever they come from seeking to demean women.
It’s very easy to talk in the abstract at the same time reducing the individual woman's experience to that of having a crap, in fact it’s incredibly insulting.

There is no simple answer and unless somebody propose anything better, It should be treated as a human since the very beginning.

In a hell of a lot of countries including countries that allow a woman the right to choose it is treated as a separate being in some instances.

There is an offence called child destruction in Britain but it’s a law preventing feticide.

People describing a foetus as a parasite or blood sucker are just unaware of how the law views a foetus and they also demean the mental anguish that women go through if they have opted for a termination.

Caholics get off ur moral high ground

This always comes up in any of these discussions involving British and American people something missing in the debating style of those of the reformed faith from other countries. The assumption being that reformed and other faiths are in favour of unrestricted abortion, at will divorce, gay marriage and so on. This is simply not the case but never miss a chance to unfairly bash the Catholic Church. Next the conspiracy theories about having to bow the knee to Rome and nonsense about two masters and so on.

I personally would never make any concrete statement about abortion except to say that I would rather live in a place that allows it than not. I would be as opposed to abortion being used as a first line contraceptive as I would be to a total ban on it.

Genealogy / Mongolian the Golden Horde - do Poles have Mongolian ancestry? [256]

Indeed. DNA isn't heritage - it's biology. I'd even go further and say it doesn't tell the whole story about ancestry.

Yes I've been saying the same for a long time.

Family history is very interesting and a worthwhile thing to research.

History / Khazar migrations to Eastern Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine [106]

So what's more likely, that the reason they have red hair is because they are descended from a known group

You really dont understand what you are saying, people can have the same markers but look completely different, eye and hair colour for example.

It is therefore important to consider whether these markers measure ancestryalone, or whether they also reflect shared environmental exposures (and thus are not always indicative of shared ancestry).

hum.utah.edu/~bbenham/2510%20Spring%2009/race%20and%20population%20genetics/Frudakis-LegitAncestryTests_Science2008.pdf

You have no evidence that you are a Khazar person you may well be but its very unlikely.

And still everything you said is nothing more then your opinions.

Not my opinion but the opinion of the scientific community.

You asked for support for my post I went out of my way to find something without numbers and symbols that everyone could read otherwise you would get a load of links to scientific journals.

Claiming ginger hair and almond eyes as some sort of proof of ancestry demonstrates a misunderstanding of the subject. Believe what you want just don't claim a scientific basis for that belief.

History / Khazar migrations to Eastern Poland, Belarus, and Ukraine [106]

I'm sure you'll say DNA testing is bull too

For the purposes that 99.9% of people use it the answer is yes it is rubbish.

Two quotes
(read the full statement)

For example, many estimations of genetic ancestry are designed to distinguish contributions from geographic regions which were prominent in colonial era population movements, especially as they affected the New World (e.g., West Africa, Europe, East Asia, and the Americas). This creates a bias that may lead us to define ancestry in reference to particular sociopolitical groups, rather than the wider range of demographic influences on our genome architecture or diversity.

And

One problem is that the "ancestral populations" assumed by some methods are not explicitly represented in these databases - and indeed cannot be represented, because we do not have the ability to sample true ancestral populations.

ashg.org/pdf/ASHGAncestryTestingStatement_FINAL.pdf

In short these tests are a racket with a "race to the bottom" in terms of price leading to reduced accuracy with no explanation of what the results mean cos they were probably written by the guy who wrote the last Sunny D advertisement.

It took you a bit longer than normal to get onto the anti Israeli stuff with this Khazar fantasy. Your story, at a stretch is just about believable, once the Anti Israel stuff (plus dark skin etc) came in then I'm convinced it's just made up.

I wouldn't be Israel's biggest fan but I don't need a fantasy and invented history to have legitimate criticisms of the place.

One million people....with all that mixing and begettin going on you choose to be a Khazar rather than something less exotic. Reminds me of the people who have that hypnotism thing and turn out to be Cleopatra not the local bottle washer.

If I were half the man my father was and so on backwards, I would be descended from giants but I'm not just bottle washers

the royal descent has been told to me over and over since I was 5 years old. Weather someone want's to or doesn't want to believe it, it is what it is

This may be true but how many people are there with a royal lineage?

Genealogy / Polish and Russian DNA? [52]

Some sites do offer that
A friend opened the door to have a large American straight from central casting offering his hand saying "Hi, I'm Chuck Turtle your 3rd cousin" (or some such).

I have about 50 first cousins with a shed load of kids, 90% live within a mile of two of me some live in America and England. Add in all the ones I dont know about, Da's uncles etc and I have 1000s of direct relatives. A test will tell me that I have DNA markers common to here not who I'm related to. The same markers are common all over Europe so they can only tell me that I'm probably from NW Europe not that I'm definitely from here

The point is that your family told you that you were Polish and you have some family history and stories, you would be better following a paper trail if one exists.

Genealogy / Polish and Russian DNA? [52]

Pat save your money these tests cannot tell you anything significant about your family history, its not going to be CSI PF.

I can tell you now that you will have a number of markers that are common to people with your family history. They may throw in a percentage of some native North American just to spice the picture up.

What will happen is that you will be plagued by "genetic cousins" who have been given your details by the company.

a racist theory around a hundred years ago, discredited by science, that made its way onto the Internet and into the fevered imaginations of people who don't get out enough.

Very cleaver people created the internet and some others have made a mockery of that endeavour.

News / History lessons no more in Poland (Tusk's change) [61]

History as taught at school was utter trash, boring and twisted and very one sided,as raised above,a series of events seemingly out of the blue with no depth just either hard facts or the silly, exercise in empathy stuff we had to do

That’s bad, a good teacher is easily worth their weight in gold however you were taught after the national curriculum was brought in (that’s sort of a designated way to teach and what to teach). My history teacher just taught what he felt like or so it seemed, later it all made sense the same with most of my other teachers.
