Language / Terms of endearment in Polish [222]

Obviously, this is the endearment form of "Tadeusz"

A poor translation.

They should just have kept it as it was. People who can't deal with foreign languages and aren't used to watching films in different languages are more likely to be sat in tarpaper shacks in backwoods Michigan and probably aren't watching books by Mann that are filmed by Visconti.

History / Monte Cassino 80th Anniversary [18]

This was a MASSIVE victory for the Poles and the Allies

The before and after pictures of the monastery are harrowing.

Interestingly, much of the fighting was due to a translation error when an intercepted German radio communication was misunderstood. That cost a lot of lives.

Kaj Munk in Denmark

A remarkable man. Denmark had it very easy in WW2 compared to Poland however there are still some amazing stories from there.

News / How will Poland be affected by WW3 which has now started [559]

Poland has been infiltrated with Russian saboteurs

This is nothing new, sadly. r*SSia is pernicious and expends a lot of resources on things like this.

the Polish public now has to be vigilant

They can decide for themselves how vigilant they want to be and if you'd ever been to Poland, you'd know how suspicious people are. Unfortunately there is a lot of countryside in PL and it is easy to hide.

the efficiency of Poland's national security services

There are a lot of personnel (at least one reading this right now) and they know how to do their job well and have a lot of experience doing it.

History / Identify the artists for these paintings? Appears to be 19th or 20th century painting [14]

To be honest the quality of the photos isn't good enough to judge that...

Not great quality, are they. The painting could do with restoration too from the look of it. There's still something about the colour and the shading on the snow that looks cruder than most of his work.

Nevertheless, I've seen real ones of his up close that are simpler than the ones in large collections.

I wonder why the poster was banned.

As I say, the style's right.

There are certainly auction houses in Chicago that are used to Kossak paintings, both originals and "in the style of" and would be used to analysing what specifically needs to be looked at to verify one.

I'd worry about the smudge around the signature however professional cleaning would help that painting. It's nice, and I'd have it on the wall.

If you go to Google Images and type in - Wojciech kossak obrazy - you'll see a fair selection of his work.

His son Jerzy and a forebear Juliusz were artists too however their styles are different.

The artistic family was called Kossak.

Be careful though, there are a lot of fakes, perhaps more paintings done in that style with the name at the bottom than ones they actually did themselves.

There were a particularly large number of fakes being sold within Polish diaspora communities. Usually the owners knew they weren't real (and the prices reflected that) but people liked to have them.

Study / Best Polish Primary school in Wroclaw for Foreigners [17]

there is lots of focus on the humanities

At that age it's certainly appropriate.

Are they following the National Curriculum?

If so, at that age the lessons will be balanced between:

English
maths
science
design and technology
history
geography
art and design
music
physical education (PE), including swimming
computing
ancient and modern foreign languages

That seems a very appropriate balance of subjects.

applying British methodology that seems to be light

Definitely not 'light' however certainly focused on critical thinking rather than pointless rote learning.

main subjects such as mathematic

Perhaps your daughter's aptitude is in the arts or humanities.

Food / Polish Golabki (Golomki) Recipe [41]

Most of the recipes are much the same. You can use either kasha or rice and either add meat or don't.

Remember to put some cabbage leaves at the bottom of the pan so they and not your gołabki burn.

And home made tomato sauce is generally a must.

UK, Ireland / "Strange " English language.. [264]

I've heard that accent.

Apparently she's from Bolton (it was in today's Metro). I'd guess somewhere outside the town, maybe one of the big estates, maybe round Farnworth or towards Prestwich.

upstage them

Linguistically?

Yes, you have. Many times in fact.

Grow up.

None of those posts you desperately trawled for say that at all, or anything like it.

Just look at the place though

A very nice city, however you don't know my hometown and never will unless I choose to disclose it to you. I've mentioned on here although your search skills are too low to find it.

And we're talking about language, not your pointless burbling, fat boy.

The rabid left

You're mixing it with the rabid right.

And this is nothing to do with language which survives, evolves and in the case of English, thrives.

No, there is only you thinking that

And the law, all historians and anyone in touch with reality. You made another mistake. Keep digging, fat boy.

But then again you have often said you are originally from Leeds

No I haven't. Don't lie.

known.
Although Wiki claims otherwise, one never knows what right wing, pro-Nazi infiltrators

That's a thing about Wikipedia.

One takeaway from my several decades in Poland is that we shouldn't be quick to relate personal politics to personal behaviour.

Some of those people who gave their lives to save Jewish people in the Holocaust weren't necessarily philosemitic. Some were undoubtedly very much not. They did what they did through human decency and/or religious conviction rather than political or cultural views.

UK, Ireland / Polish immigrants in the UK - victims or criminals?! [286]

Sebastian Świtek (42 but looks older) is in the neighbouring country of Ireland rather than the U.K. but this is still funny. I wish I'd been there to see it...

"A man who turned up at a takeaway with what were described as improvised petrol bombs says he wasn't trying to commit "terrorism" but was unhappy with what he described as a "sh*t kebab"."

"Sebastian Switaj (42), of Rathowen, Fermoy, Co Cork, is set to be sentenced next month for the bizarre incident at his local takeaway Amigos on August 6 last year."

And it gets better:

"He said f**k off I don't give you nothing, you have good kebab.

"They said get out, f**k off you crazy man, go home, this is only money.

"And you see what happened."

Asked why he had petrol bombs with him, Switaj said: "It was for fire in fireplace."

Looks like he's a bit of a character...

The court was told that Mr Switaj had five previous convictions, including one for assault and one for obstruction, and that five months before the incident at Amigos he had received a suspended sentence for assault.

It's mentioned in the main Wikipedia, in English, however it seems to have been added as an extra.

Did you see the article from paxchristusa?

History / Time for Slavic Commonwealth around Poland as center [223]

What a ridiculous statement that is so obviously false!

Quite. It's a high income country now (though not a high wage country) however it's a long way from being among the richest. One strength is 5he mix between agriculture and industry however PL seems to be doing well within the EU.

Yet another Russian troll on this forum

Yes. Absolutely transparent.
