History / Poland's borders throughout history [25]

German atlases typically still refer to Polish cities by their "former" German names, Danzig rather than Gdansk etc.!

History / Malinowo: Polish-Nazi Supression? [447]

Tito's Partisans were up there, along with Jean Moulin or those intrepid heroes of Telemark:-)

Wo, people! Poland was a truly mixed bag, and therefore, individual collaborationist tendencies notwithstanding

Language / Polish Swear Words [1242]

When once in Italy, a friend of mine at the time from Rome and I came upon two people talking together. Not knowing Italian, I figured from their voluble emotíons that they were cursing one another out. Angelina explained they were making plans for a bíg dinner party:-)

Genealogy / Am I of Polish or German descent? [10]

Many European countries have a birthright based on country of orígin. This means that if one's birth parents are from abroad, even one born in Poland for example, might not be considered citizens aka nationals.

Again, the nation which gave us Szopen, Mickiewicz, Wajda, Pilecki, Wójtyla, and Karski, also gave us Roman Dmowski, Moscicki, and Rydz-Smigly! Every country has her black sheep, Poloniusz.

Genealogy / Am I of Polish or German descent? [10]

Many Poles can claim German descent. Yet, often Poles may actually deny any German connection. Prussians, by the way, are neither German nor Slavic, but Baltic:-) Does this help?

I simply meant that certain segments of Polish society were in fact Nazi flunkies, however, this clearly was a minority!

Poland is no more "guilty by association" than you or I! Poland was a mere pawn of the Nazis, forced into submission. Their record immediately post-War's anothdr matter.

Spot on, matey! History's always in search of victims, the weak link (no pun intended) on the wheel of causality. Once, it was the Jews, today the Muslims, tomorrow? Who knows for certain?

There's no "version" of the Holocaust! What happened is a matter of public record, no more, no less, so let's just stop playing David Irving.

Apropos a Polish judge just brought action against two Holocaust scholars for allegedly downplaying Poland's role in the Holocaust. We're back to square one, folks.

No nation wishes to be publically besmirched! But when extant eye-witness evidentiary accounts are overwhelming, testimony MUST be heard. @Mr. Grunvald, I too am intimitely familiar with Den norske Modstandsbevegelse :-)

The US is the country of my birth and my political allegiance. I am proud when my country does well, critical when she falls far short.

If Poland's Jews, thanks to Jan Gross's daring, and maligned, exposé re: Jedwabne in "Fear"(Strach) didn't see a shread of justice, not necessarily monetary either, it's a cinch this time 'round that nobody's going to get any consolation!
