History / POLISH AND RUSSIAN FRIENDSHIP WILL LAST FOREVER [513]

good historical start for Poles if they will create strong friendship and brotherhood at least with Ukrainians

They already exist... Relations have arguably never been better (2004 was a turnaround from decades of institutionalized hostility). Large scale labor (and educational) migration to Poland over the last few years have also helped bring the countries together.

perhaps Belarussians

Not as many but there's a lot of sympathy for the Belarusian pubic.

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1800]

Belarussians are as hated as Russians.

The Belarusian government? Yes. Belarusian population? No... (Polish people recognize a population terrorized by its government easily enough to know how much most Belarusians would like to be free of Lukashenka...

you never make any positive comments about women then

complete negativity is his shtick... he thinks it makes him fascinating or something (rather than being incredibly tedious)

didn't get personal with Novichok, she only asked him a legitimate question

In his world, women should ask permission to speak and if permission is not given then they hold their silence.

Immigrants shouldn't claim that status

Well Poland has invested a _lot_ into Belarusian (a language most Belarusians don't care for....) so I'm not sure how much sense it makes to keep it from those who do want it (especially if there's a good chance they'll return to Belarus afer some future regime change...

Or maybe the Polish government wants them to stay and to make it harder for them to leave at some future time?

Language / How well do Polish people understand Slovak? [88]

when Slowaks speak amongst themselves, I struggle

Was once on a train ride for about an hour with 5 or 6 Slovaks (we were going to the same meeting) and they spent the time talking to each other. I could understand 2/3 to 3/4 of the roots but I couldn't put it together fast enough in my head to actually understand anything beyond the occasional sentence fragment.

Once in a train in Slovakia a mother and child were practicing basic math problems and I could understand when the mother made a mistake (she realized a moment after she said it - we cocked our heads 'wait... that's not right' at the same time.

Another time in a hotel in Bratislava the older staff understood Polish while the younger had more problems.... (though their English wasn't very good either).

Czechs and Slowaks adjusting accents to understand each other.

My understanding is that Slovaks still understand Czech but Czechs don't understand as much Slovak as they used to.... (though the differences between formal and everyday Czech and dialect differences in the country mean they're still used to adjusting their accents - while Poles..... aren't.

absolutely fluently and without the slightest problem

Probably a big of an exaggeration for your sake....

primarily about Poles and Lithuanians

But not exclusively!

Here's an interesting story, children of Belarusians in Poland want to go to school with children from the Polish Belarusian minority but they can't because minority language education is only for citizens....

Language / Is anyone playing Polish wordle - słowle? [3]

Is anyone doing the Polish version of wordle (słowle)

slowle.pl/

I can't help but think that six (or seven) letters would work better for Polish (a Russian speaking friend thinks the same about Russian)

I'm.... curious about some of the word choices....

one I missed was 'gajdy' (isn't that too regional?)

I did get yesterday's (remix) though I'm not so sure about its status as a Polish word....

News / Will America send troops to fight a Russian invasion of Baltics and/or Poland? [283]

Poland would be the first NATO country Russia would try if they could.

Poland is too big and relatively important.... I would say they'd try for Latvia on the pretext of "protecting" ethnic Russians there.... who cares about..... Latvia? or maybe Estonia or Lithuania (they have the right to connect Kaliningrad with the rest of the motherland!).

Poland would be symbolic in the reconstruction of the USSR (which would not be any more economically viable the second time around than it was in its original run ....)

Stay and integrate

To what degree? Should they learn Lithuanian (as they currently do)? They should completely leave Polish behind? why?

Are you against the Welsh speaking Welsh in Wales? If so..... why?

So what are they then?

People who have been there since long before the borders were drawn. They're more like the Welsh in Wales... rather than protestants in Northern Ireland... (noted for their lack of integration into their new country.... awful immigrants they turned out to be....)

Anything Serbian is always a poor choice....

Very true, although the reasoning (according to an interview I read years ago with a Lithuanian) was that Polish culture was a bigger threat because it was more attractive (Lithuanian nobility had a track record self-polonisation). Russian culture on the other hand was alien and imposed so in that respect wasn't as threatening....

side with Maf on this one.

I don't think so.... you're talking about Poles in Lithuania as if they're immigrants, and they're not.

Minority politics are different from immigration politics. I don't think anyone's arguing that Poles in Lithuania don't have to learn Lithuanian and use it in certain contexts (of course they do) but that's the starting point of minority policy not the culmination.

Interestingly according to something I read a long time ago, when Lithuanian nationalism was being created they decided to follow (out of several possible models) the Serbian model which requires eternal enemies and Poland was chosen as it was seen as more of a threat to Lithuanian cultural identity. The alphabet was even reformed to make it less like Polish (taking in those Czech letters).

the justice minister criticized the PM

Not sure about the particular occasion but the two have been in semi-open warfare for years (Kaczyński likes to pit those beneath against each other).

I don't like Morawiecki but Ziobro is far, far worse. He's the most dangerous person in the current government....

Brits in Poland that have a hard tiem ajusting.

Mainly what I remember was a kind of outraged incredulity about almost anything that was different from the UK (I remember one who was.... miffed that Polish kiosks weren't selling British brands of cigarettes... or another that British newspapers weren't available at every Ruch...

There was also a weird kind of perverse pride in not learning the language even after living in Poland for many years... (not sure why being helpless as an infant is something to be proud of, but..... whatever). Interestingly, despite our bad reputations IME Americans did much better with learning the language. At one point I knew about four Americans (none of whom had Polish ancestry) who all knew Polish well enough to deal with bureaucracy on their own without a translator and a similar number of Brits none of whom could say much more than 'dzień dobry pan'.... (yeah I know that's wrong - that's the point).

There were/are exceptions and I have known a few Brits who did learn Polish and adapted to local conditions. But the ones that didn't.... boy did they not....

True to all of the basic principles of PiS (never be reasonable when you can be nasty and vindictive instead, avoid transparency the way a vampire avoids sunlight, hold on to grudges forever...) the entertainment network tvn7 has still not received approval of the extension of their concession with just over a week before the current concession expires.

Also true to form no reason is being given for the repeated failure of the National Broadcasting Council to come to what should be a routine extension.... So the assumption is that this is for the same reason they delayed the approval of tvn24.... they don't like the owners politically and they're maybe hoping to remove tvn7 from the free broadcasting in their never-ending drive to recreate the media environment of the communist period with tv controlled exclusively by the ruling party...
