For example consumption of pure alcohol per capita in Poland (13.25 liters/person/year) is comparable to that of Ukraine
(15.60) and Russia (15.76)

And Nigeria...

Polish GDP per capita both nominal and PPP is similar to that of Russia.

And Brazil...

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

I suspect the desire of some posters here to pretend that Poland isn't Eastern European at all is made up of 25% Russophobia, 25% Cultural Cringe, 25% ignorance and/or lack of perspective on Eastern and Central Europe and 25% cluelessness.

Mmm fascinating analysis... how about adding a bit of fekcin geography ?

Linguists, ethnologists e.g. do foolishly such outrageous things.

Hmm... so what's an "Eastern European" culture or "Eastern European" langguage ?

I suggest you read my initial statement:

I did. You say Poland is in Eastern Europe due to post WW2 politics.

History / The restoration of Polish cities from WW2 destruction [123]

Malbork, a town in northern Poland, whose 80% was destroyed during WW2, was destroyed one more time by Polish communists with ugly socialist buildings.

As much as I despise communism, I have to defend the bastards in this case. Destruction of fixed assets in Poland at the end of WW2 was so terrible that millions of people had to be quickly housed somewhere, so visual quality of the buildings was obviously not the top priority. Even If Poland had been a democratic/free market country after WW2, we wouldn't have avoided "ugly" public housing projects.

As for germanic whinning present in this thread, It's not really surprising that German monuments were taken down, too bad they were often replaced with Lenins and similar disgusting crap, however that was quickly "fixed" after 89... Deliberate destruction of historical German buildings/old towns ? I really doubt it happened, renovation of damaged historical buildings is much more complicated than razing them down and building new ones instead, so in many cases it happened simply because there were crowds of people without roof over their heads, not because they were "German" buildings. Additionally, what can be seen now as "historical", worth preserving etc. was not always the same in those times, buildings from late 1800's were not that much historical in late 40's.

I'm not sure how me having doubts makes your opinion?

It's simple really, you don't seem to have any agenda on this issue, you just wanted to find out when the new life begins... and you failed, so If we are not sure if it is already a human or not, it's safer to assume it is...

Nowicka is anything but a "radical".

One more evidence that you have totally no clue about Polish politics. Why don't you start a new thread on her and ask PF members if she is a radical lefist or not ?

but I'd trust a vice-speaker of the Sejm over those figures any day of the week.

I suppose you mean this crap ?

‘We estimate… that on average 150,000 abortions are performed per year,’ Wanda Nowicka, head of the Polish Federation for Women and Family Planning, told the meeting.

Well, common sense should tell you that "estimates" coming from somone, who based all her pitiful "career" on pushing pro-abortion agenda, are not really reliable.

I am just trying to figure out when human personhood begins

And you are struggeling to set any line... that's why in my opinion "it" is a human since an egg is fertilized... unless aborted, it would most probably develop into a grown up person therefore it is a human, just in the very early stage of development... some are pointing out that "it" isn't a human becasue "it" can't do this or that but one could "prove" the same way that a recently born baby is not a human either, after all "it" can't even speak or walk.

Some believe that sperm should not be 'wasted' because it has the potential for life

It has potential for life as much as water has potential to become a house... after it's mixed with a few other things and turned into concrete... sperm has the potential for life but is not really life yet, a fetus is. Do you have siblings ? I do, they look similar to me but are totally different, they have totally different jobs, interests or political views... It's obviously not that when one "abort" a child and 1 or 2 years later get pregnant again, It will be the same person after birth... which shows that each fetus is an unique person in its early stage of development...

Some here claim that it's not a human yet becasue is not able to survive independently... well, can a 1 year old child survive independently ? Why not "abort" up to a few years after birth then?

When is an unborn child a life? two months into pregnancy? two days?

From the very beginning. If you do not agree, please provide your definition.

But OK, if you're content to imprison pregnant women, and approve of invasive medical intervention against the woman's will, that's your right.

Is this happening in Poland right now ?

...because feeling mature has got so much to do with gettin your hole.

Not sure what "getting your hole" mean... but If you want to discuss my approach to sex so badly, I am admitting that I'm not perfect enough to follow "no sex before marriage" rule but I do follow (I broke it once or twice but that was long time ago) my own "If it is certain from the start that you won't even try to make any serious relationship with her, don't do "it" " rule. In other words, If I see a drunk, stupid slut in a nightclub, who is giving "signals" that she is "willing", I just don't go for it, hence there is no risk that I will get pregnant a woman I definitely do not want to have anything to do with. I had sex with women I did not know well enough to plan having children with them but they were not some village idiots, If something "went wrong", I would have been ready to marry any of them and bring up the child together.

By the way, I find the "women should have a choice", "we should not force them" line, you male expats are pushing here, really amusing. Let's be honest, you just want to have an easy way out for yourself, so If something "go wrong", you will talk her into aborting and "problem" solved. So much for your "pro-women" attitude.

errrr...............wtf are you on about?

I didn't follow that case in details but as far as I remember, Breivik claims he did it because he hate leftists/immigrants, who ruin Europe and he would like to see European culture, values preserved etc. My point is that he's totally wrong. Becasue European, culture/values were lost long time ago, this "discussion" is a very good example that it already happened.

The upgrade, which is intended to keep the jets operational until at least 2030, will increase their combat capabilities and their compatibility with the Polish Air Force's F-16 fighters, according to a ministry document.

Can i presume then, that should the worse case scenario occur, you would expect your partner to have an unwanted child?

Yes, we both would have to take responsibility for this child. If you feel mature enough to have sex, you must be prepared to take responsibility for the result of it, even if "it" was not planned, let's be honest, many of us were "not planned".

Or women whose chance of a career has been blown due to falling pregnant.

Terrible.

In a hell of a lot of countries including countries that allow a woman the right to choose it is treated as a separate being in some instances.

Sure, If one beats up a pregnant woman and in result, she loses a child, there are totally different charges than If one kicked a guy, who then falls down and get a few bruises.

BTW I should live long enough to see large parts of western Europe controlled by Muslims. Breivik is totally wrong, you people became so pathetic that it actually will be an improvement, hopefully there will be not enough teching English jobs in "Eastern Europe" to accomodate too many of you here.

The funniest thing is that when you all, "people" will be close to kicking the bucket, you will be all so little then, so quite and so scared of what is going to happen after... you may scream now but that's all you can do.

If she did, I'd have never existed so it would have been no loss to me.

No loss to humanity either... Initially I didn't notice the "unwanted parasite" part, after that I am not going to discuss anything with a quasi-human like you. Hopefully you will leave us and go to some parallel universe soon, the sooner the better.

It's not necessarily about "benefit of the child". I am anti-abortion first of all because people should be responsible for their actions... not behave like animals. Think before you do something. Making abortion legal is teaching people irresponsibility. Another thing is a border line when a human begins... how do you set it ? After it is born ? Why not several weeks or months earlier ? Why not several weeks or months later ? There is no simple answer and unless somebody propose anything better, It should be treated as a human since the very beginning.

If I were to ever become preganat whilst I'm living here, I'd be on the 1st flight back to the UK to expel the unwanted parasite

Too bad your mom didn't think the same.

History / Poland's undying debt to Polonia [76]

Grzegorz, why do you have to be rude?I'm not missing your point at all

OK, so let's go though it again. You said:

I can see how you would be annoyed at someone who hasn't lived there all their life and wasn't born and raised there doing the same thing

OK, you are right. I am. I am annoyed that several British expats are doing the same thing and even more so that you are supporting their claims to posses some superior knowledge just for being temporary located in Poland. Are you going support me, If I start pushing "you were not born/educated here, don't even speak Polish, so what can you know" line against them ? Y/N and why ?
