This is a long, old thread. The info that I'll relate from my family goes back to the years prior to WW I (1890s to 1909). Both sides of the family came from imperial Russia. Those relatives who came from modern Belorussia seemed to not have problems with the Russians. Most of the neighbors were Byelorussians and Jews. But the closer you lived to a border region, the more repressive the Russian government was. The side of the family from the Lublin area (near the Austro-Hungarian border) did mention police often, even out in the villages. They were everywhere and always snooping around. So that side of the family definitely has no love lost on the Russians.
