Here are pictures of the painting and a close up of the painter's signature. Many thanks!

  • Does anyone recognize the name of this painter?

  • Here's a closeup of the signature

[Moved from]: Rossak or Kossak - help me decipher the artist's name

I can't tell if this is Rossak or Kossak. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

@LPelo, it looks like Adam Setkowicz:

Where did you get this painting from (if you don't mind sharing the info)?

@LPelo, it looks like Wojciech Kossak to me.

Is it an original painting? :O

The artistic family was called Kossak.

Be careful though, there are a lot of fakes, perhaps more paintings done in that style with the name at the bottom than ones they actually did themselves.

There were a particularly large number of fakes being sold within Polish diaspora communities. Usually the owners knew they weren't real (and the prices reflected that) but people liked to have them.

@LPelo, could you take a better photo of the painting? A bit closer and not from above - maybe sit in front of it while taking the photo if you can?

Is there anything at the back of the painting?

It's certainly in that style, albeit rather cruder than most of his stuff.

I'm not sure if there's a Catalogue Raisonné; the Muzeum Narodowy in Warsaw may be able to advise.

As I say, the style's right.

There are certainly auction houses in Chicago that are used to Kossak paintings, both originals and "in the style of" and would be used to analysing what specifically needs to be looked at to verify one.

I'd worry about the smudge around the signature however professional cleaning would help that painting. It's nice, and I'd have it on the wall.

If you go to Google Images and type in - Wojciech kossak obrazy - you'll see a fair selection of his work.

His son Jerzy and a forebear Juliusz were artists too however their styles are different.

@LPelo, thanks for the photos!

Could you take a close up photo of that "sticker" on the back of the painting? What does it say?

To be honest the quality of the photos isn't good enough to judge that...

I don't know, but this painting doesn't seem to show up on Google.

the Muzeum Narodowy in Warsaw may be able to advise.

People often contact Desa Unicum (the biggest auction house in Poland) to identify and get a price evaluation of a painting:

Not great quality, are they. The painting could do with restoration too from the look of it. There's still something about the colour and the shading on the snow that looks cruder than most of his work.

Nevertheless, I've seen real ones of his up close that are simpler than the ones in large collections.

I wonder why the poster was banned.

Yeah, this is weird, especially considering the rest of the painting looks intact. đŸ¤”

Btw, why LPelo got suspended? o_O She literally just joined the forum - come on, mods, give her a break... Opening multiple threads on the same topic.
