Is there any type of online public records search in Poland? Preferably a website in both Polish and English. Maybe something similar to a genealogy site, property ownership records, birth records, etc.
Merged: Finding family (I'd like to access public and parish records in Poland)
I originally joined Ancestry's "world wide" site, thinking that I could find out about my Polish relatives. However during a years membership, the information about my relatives they sent me, was information that I had inputted myself. I did find information on my husband's English relatives, but nothing on mine. I know little of my parents background other than their dates of birth and the towns they came from in Poland. I'd like to access parish records, but I wouldn't know where to start, I also do not read Polish, which is a double problem. Help!!!
One issue is that a lot of records didn't survive WW2 and therefore can't appear online. Another is that Ancestry.com depends on people who've got the records (usually the Mormon church) making them available to go online.
I have my great grandparents located to Galicia area (broadly). Will I be able to locate records myself online or should I trust a geneology service that I have located in Poland? That are an hourly fee based group. My wife is hesitant to use them. This is something I've always wanted to know about since I was a child. Thanks
@Mowkep It depends. Some records are available online. Some are not . Even if they're not, you can contact the archives yourself. In most cases state archives will do. Whatplaces and years are you looking for? What religion?
Everyone on this side of the ocean are Catholic. I however have some Ashkenazi lineage somewhere. I have my Grandfather's birth year as 1894. Not sure when he was married in Poland.
Records here said he was born in Nowy szac, Galicia. My contact from Polish geneologists said he was born in szymanowice. They are going to use the tarnow Parrish to locate more records for great grandparents.
Start with this. Records from st Margaret's Catholic parish in Nowy Sącz from 1890 -1900 are online here szukajwarchiwach.pl/31/488/0#tabJednostki If you don't find him, contact the state archives.
Szymanowice in wielkopolskie are also indexed at geneteka so look him up there. If you find him, a scan of the record might be available on the right.
The Tarnow Roman Catholic archives. The people on-line must have used ancestry.com. I was able to retrieve the same information. The TRCA has records of baptisms and such. It shows my great grandfathers baptism on that site. I'll have to figure out how to get info from Syzmanowice archives
Contact the archives yourself then. There's a Stanisław Pasiut baptised in Szymanowice on January 16th, 1896 on familysearch. No image available but according to the info there he was son of Joannes (Jan in Polish or John in English ) and Catherina (Katarzyna in Polish) nee Berdychowska.
I thought you meant another place called Szymanowice.
Edit : there's another Stanisław baptised in Szymanowice in 1894, son of Joannes and Marianna Mgischer.
It does get confusing with there being multiple Stanleys, born so close together, in the same area, and immigrating to the USA. I have his naturalization paper and it shows a 01/05/1894 birth date and his birthplace being Szymanowice, Nowy Sacz. Wladyslawa, his wife, was born in Stronie 06/15/1894. The paper also lists all their children so I can confirm that it is indeed him. From what I recall, he was baptized around 11 days after birth? I have yet to find their marriage certificate which would help a little.
