When my husband was young, his grandmother would get a cake called Seven Sisters Cake from a bakery in Hamtramck, Michigan. It was a yellow cake cut into seven layers and it was frosted with a chocolate filling. He remembers when his grandmother would cut a slice of the cake that he would break off a piece to eat. His remembers the frosting being harder then tradional frosting, more like a fudge. I was hoping some one might also remember a cake like this, possibly another name, recipe or where to buy it.
Don't think Marsha Washington Bakery is in existence anymore. New Palace and Oaza Bakery also make a seven sisters cake. Oaza is the best, according to my Hamtramck Hubby.
We were just talking about the 7-sisters cake and thought I'd try to call it up on the internet for a recipe. I'm going to keep looking myself.
I am really surprised that no one has or is willing to share the recipe for the seven sisters cake. I live on an island and cannot even get anyone to ship me any of these cakes. Would be nice if I could at least bake one for my husband and my enjoyment. Where I live they have their own foods and do not take to anything that is out of their realm and they would not fall head over heals for this kind of cake. They do not even know what Polish food is or care to try it, I know cause I tried to serve some Polish dishes and they were passed over. Sure would like to get this recipe for the seven sister cake before my husband passes away from his heart problem, I know he would enjoy it
I just ordered a cookbook from my local library that has a recipe in it for Seven Sisters Cake. It should be here anyday and I will share the recipe asap.
You can try the Polish Market on 15 and Dequindere. They have a similar cake called stefanka(ukranian word for it, im ukranian) except its a chocolate cake instead of a white cake.
It is an awesome cake. If you get the recipe let me know, my wife said she would make it for me. I used to get the cake in Mt. Clemens, but that bakery changed owners and it wasn't the same. I just bought a piece of the Seven Sisters cake today in St Clair Shores at a Bakery at 12mile & Little Mack.
I think your talking about Dobosz Tort. It's 7 thin layers of cake with filling in between the layers covered in a coffee cocoa flavored icing..This is delicious..Thanks..
my mom's side of the family is from Slovenija (the upper most part of former yugoslavia-but you probably know, being on a Polish website!). Growing up, we would go to Belgrade bakery near 9mile rd. on Van Dyke and get it. I've been craving it for years, but just haven't gone in and gotten one. I'm pretty sure they still sell it. The bakery was called "Ethnic Bakery" the last I saw. They sell Yugoslavian products- the owners, as far as I know, are Serbian. We "Yugoslavians" share many similarities with Polish people. If you want to surprise your husband, go to Ethnic Bakery and pick one up! BTW, our Seven Sisters Cake is 7 layers of yellow cake, with a pink and chocolate filling in between them and the entire cake, or "torta", is covered in a chocolate shell. Yum!!! It is fairly small, but goes a long way. If I could make it as good as the bakery, I'd make it every week!!! Good luck!!!
oh, by the way, the bakery is in Warren, Michigan. I thought this was a Michigan website, considering some of you were talking about Hamtramck. Sorry!!!
Seven Sisters Cake, I am also searching for a recipe. I found one 10 yrs ago it was close but not as good as the bakeries make. I cant find it, but it was almost a cookie base like Stella doras making up the yellow cake and I remember the chocolate on the inside was lighter than the outside and it did have coffee in the outside icing. I will continue to search this out. And of course drive to hamtramck to purchase one from the bakery for Christmas!!
I would love to get a seven sisters cake recipe. My mother-n-law has passed and my daughter loves this cake. I called the Supreme Bakery in Detroit Michigan and asked if they would ship. They told me no. If anyone has the recipe, please forward it to me. Thank You
hi all, I used to work for Farmer Jack Bakeries. In the 90's we were into ethnic and gourmet items and we made 7 layer torte. I do not know the exact recipe but if you can bake you can do this: We made a basic thin yellow/ white sponge cake on 7 sheet pans. The filling was light chocolate buttercream. We would spred the choc buttercream lightly and assemble all 7 layers and then freeze the layers. We then would cut small oblong's (when the cake was half thawed) then dip the top and sides in granche. They would dry on wire screens then transfered to cardboard cake boards and then using the light choc buttercream make a small shell border, Thats how we did it and my dad said it was just like the old time Hamtamack 7 Sisters cake.Hope this helps, Ruth
The Seven Sisters cake that I am familiar with is quite different. It is a Danish recipe and is more of a breakfast cake. It has a crust-like shell and is filled with seven "sisters" which are rolled. It is filled with an almond custard and frosted with a thin white icing. I have mine shipped from O & H Danish Bakery in Racine, WI.
The East Detroit Bakery on 9 Mile Rd (between Gratiot & Kelly) has the seven sisters cake. It tastes just like the ones my dad used to buy from the Chene St. bakeries. MMMM!
Myski thank you very much Myski for bringing back old memories and a place to purchase. My father and mother grew up in that area and yes that seven sisters is a very fond memory to me. My dad also used to buy me the honey molasses cookies which i thought were the greatest. Oh and Victoria-Guest I don't know who THEY are, but the recipe as far as I know has always been a bakery Item for special Saturday shopping like angel wings. tyvm
Been buying this cake ( 7 sisters cake) at New Palace Bakery in Hamtramck. I don't care for Martha Washingtons version. Not as good. But am still looking for the recipe and can't seem to find it anywhere. If someone ever finds it please let me know.
The Seven Sister Coffee Cake is made by layering Danish pastry dough, creamed almond filling, custard and seven spiraled rolls. The Seven Sisters Coffee Cake is a delicious addition to any family brunch or special occasion!
