In Krakow in bakery we call straight rogal- sztangielek. It is very Krakow name.

Food / Polish regions and food [16]

I think it is quite interesting different regions of Poland and different recipies even different names for dishes .

For instance in Krakow burgers we call sznycel - I know in the north it is called kotlet .
mielony.

I am curious how do you cook betroot soup ? I gave mine to my few English friends and they quite like it.

Love / What kind of girls do Polish men like, and why? [30]

I suppose it is genetic - caveman was looking for food and woman stayed at home ( cave:)waiting gratefuly when her beloved man return with trophy.

It has changed now.But men still have this feeling of leadership , winning .....

I remember during my studying at Polytechnic there was couple in my group. I remember one exam which she did really well and he just passed.Later, they were standing outside she happy and he all grumpy and moody.

What relation was it as he couldn't stand that he proved to be better than him. it is little thing just eaxm but I thought this man was a w f u l . Big snob and arrogant.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

unforunately lots true in it.

Parking permited everywhere. Lots of confusing road signs. - yes, Why is it so bad? I must say that England signs, directions are so clear so often even "little monkey" wouldn;t get lost.

In Poland it is nightmare. And why????? it is not so expensive it is just negligence. My friend took me on 1 day trip from krakow to Zywiec and what..... ok there seem to be more, and more rounabouts but no signs. She drives towards roundabout and asks?... where to go? no directions anywhere. You can always try all exits and go around,around.....

That is true about dog shit- So in Poland owners are not obliged to clean it? no law? I remember when I was in USa there was very strict about it there.

5. Lots of girls would wear clothes and use make up only prostitutes would in USA
It is not so bad, it is changing for better....

. Customre service people busy talking would have no time to help you. Administration wouldn't solve problem but would avoid making any decision; just not to be responsible for mistake. There IS sombody above your clerk who would make desision . Administrative desision is seldom final.

I am afraid it is everythere the same.
maybe it is strange but I met more incompetent clerks in England than in Poland.

Life / How do Polish view others [116]

I suppose it is more for previous generations but my uncle was born and brough up in Lwow( Polish Lwow) so he didn't like Ukrainians.

I think that Poland has quite bad geographical location- between 2 big countries who were always happy to invade us ( or at least cut a bit of our land ) .That is why probbaly we like countries like USA, GB- far away, in general rather friendly never our enemies.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

I think that our culture is changing in sone aspects ( I suppose it is the same with other nations) buit I have ipression that some articles and opinions about Poland are a little "out-dated".

Love / Cultural dating differences?? [19]

I believe that all people are different and like to approach dating/relationships in their own ways

Monkeyboy, that is so true.......

You can have polish man and woman and they have nothing in common ....and polish english couple who click straight away.

I suppose difference is sometimes about past, upbringing.

When I met with my mates We can recollect funny moment from our school, university.....

I can't do it as much with my husband as he was brought up in England.

And all these snacks, sweets..... you have so many of them and know them all.
I suppose average English person knows what kind of sweets are in quality street tin.
We are not so much about it:) :) :)- I know maybe little stupid example.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

maybe i am wrong But I was thinking about the reason .

Let's say someone is young, lives in a place when it is difficult to find any job or can find job but very poorly paid. He looks around all his mates go to Uk for 1-2 years and are able to save enough money to buy small flat or start buliding house.( maybe not in Krakow, Wroclaw but in some places you probbaly buy flat , house for 20K pounds).

This is what English call keeping with Joneses ......I am not surprised that so many people go abroad.

I was probbaly like you Madziula had good job in Krakow and moved to England because my husband is English otherwise I wouldn't go anywhere my financial situation in Krakow was fine and i love Krakow.

Life / Cheap living in Krakow [8]

I am not so sure what it is massolits bookshop.

I found website Krakow.gumtree.pl ( unfortunately Krakow is only in polish language ) and prices vary from 650zl-2000zl

I think that you should be ok for 400 euro ( if you rent relatively cheap flat) but can't be too lavish.

Life / Cheap living in Krakow [8]

I think that prices vary on location, closer to centre is more expensive. I thinbk that it depends for how long you want ot stay? I think that apartments in the centre are usually rented for long weekends, max weeks.

If you want to stay longer maybe rent something trough estate-agent?

Love / Do Polish men have a problem with Tatto's on women? [47]

Where are you from?! I have never met a sailor or a prisoner, but a lot of people with tatoos who just like the idea, from reggae fans to "perfectly correct citizens" who are relaxed enough to dare be different from the crowd.

I am from Krakow and it is how it was ( I don't know if it isnow ...) there. Maybe it has changed but to be honest I was there 2 weeks ago and didn't see as many people with tatoos like in England.

But I think it is fashion maybe in next 10 years they will be no more fashionable in England but starts to be popular in Poland.

I suppose I dind't meet many reggae fans even I quite like reggaae

Love / Do Polish men have a problem with Tatto's on women? [47]

I dont know how it is now but in general I remember that in Poland tatoos had usually prisoners and sailors. They were thought to be rough.

I noticed that they are very popular in UK.

Again differences in our culture I suppose.

Shelley is rhight little tatoo in right place is sexy- just not too much and not too big.

Life / Poland: The Things That Make Foreigners Lift a Brow [123]

Another strange thing is that, mostly at night, but even during daytime, you can see drunken people in the street. This is very uncommon in the West, but the Poles do drink a lot outside their homes and often ride a bus or a tram or simply walk home - singing, talking (often to themselves or others), swearing, sometimes abusing or even attacking strangers. This is the famous Polish vodka talking.

not really, maybe 20 years ago not now.

When I was in USA few years ago , completely drunk woman was sitting next to me. - "in the west" as you say.

Food / Mushroom Picking Parties (Poland tradition) [74]

When I was in Krakow last week there were lots fresh mushroom to buy on the markets.
Thinking about everything packed, steriled in England and those mushroom they smelt so nice.

I was only a little suspicious. If someone who was picking them made mistake? Are there any regulations in Poland about selling fresh mushrooms?

Food / family recipes [25]

wozzy,

ok I have recipe for my mum rum-cake.

I will try to translate it in the best way.

ingredients:
150g of flour
150 g of sugar
150 g of butter ( melted)
3 eggs
50g of cocoa powder
1 flat teaspon of baking powder.

for glaze
250g of icing sugar
2-3 spoon of water
2-3 spoon of rum
( more less )

Butter melt add sugar ,flour, cocoa, baking powder egg yolks and in the end - whipped egg whites.
put into form , bake for about 15 minutes.( 150C)in preheated oven.

take out and put glaze on it.

to make glaze put icing sugar into bowl add water and rum ( better more rum it has better aromat) - mix together to make it soft but densy.

if put hot on the cake it melts more and move equally.

really quick and nice.

Smacznego:)

Life / Are Polish People Racist? [1037]

never will change,I am afraid.

it depends on people attitude, education, how they were brought up, influence of other people...

That is why it is annoying to call Polish racist we are not more not less racist than other nations.

News / What makes Poland different from other countries [55]

I was thinking about 1st of November, All Souls Day.

It is very special day in Poland.Family members from all over the country meet together at family grave. It seem to be sad but it is special day for me. My husband is English I can't explain it to him. he has to go with me one day and see.It is time of silence, looking into yourself, muse....

Especially in the evening when it gets dark and all lights shine...

I suppose as way of life we are quite family orientated I mean we can argue, shout at each other but in general we are quite loyal.

Yes, I think we are quite loyal as nation.

News / What makes Poland different from other countries [55]

I agree that customer service in Poland is not great. I think that people are still rude they miss some manners.
But I wouldn't say that customer service is so great un UK or USA.

Ok, in UK in general everyone is polite but not always helpful. You can also say in polite way f....off. And in shops they are so pushy to sell you store cards. I find it annoying . Last time I was in BHS and woman there was so pushy....someone said that thye should hear 3 times no to stop. After 3 times I could get rather angry.

News / Polish Workers Abroad on BBC World [5]

I found something on internet ( with nice picture of Wroclaw market) but it is dated from 02/08/?

What is it about Wroclaw? I think that I read about it in daily mail -while ago. they picture Wroclaw as empty town as everyone emigrated to Uk. is it so bad?

I got maybe obsessed after reading all these articles here so when I was last week in Krakow I started to look around but it is busy everywhere so I suppose not so many people moved away as they say.

Food / family recipes [25]

I know there are quite a few threads about food.

I was thinking about new one- Could we send here some recipes for polish dishes- but some more family ones. I mean which we have from our friend, neighbour, grandmoter....

And we tried them, we like them and they are delicious.
I thought it could be so useful as each of us can try to do some of them at home.

UK, Ireland / TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE/DISLIKE IN UK [51]

Well, this is how things have been for a long time (hundreds of years).I like the fact things are different.Already we have had to change many of our traditions because the EU says so -like now weighing in Kgs instead of pounds/kms instead of miles etc.I am sure you would not want Poland to be just like Germany etc...

oh no, we are quite stubborn and we like our polish way of doing things.

I was thinking that it is probably geographical reason that England was isolated as an island so has its own rules of doing things.

UK, Ireland / TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE/DISLIKE IN UK [51]

I don't know if I like it or not- I got used to it but why England wants to be so different to the rest of Europe?

I wouldn't say about driving on the left side but all little differences like:
- addresses- number of the street in the beginning not in the end, post code completely in the end
- 1 and 9- different handwriting than the rest of europe
- In the resturants waiters serving from left side........

UK, Ireland / TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE/DISLIKE IN UK [51]

I have noticed that in England there are more and more mixer taps.

Especially in new houses.

I quite liked when we stayed in Filey-Yorkshire- in old traditonal hotel and there were there 2 taps.
Litttle old fashioned but in nice way.
