News / What do you associate Poland with? [27]

sad faces
gray towns
fun countryside
kick ass students' attitude towards... everything
dumb policemen
and again... good food (and cheap) - first thing I think about when going to Poland

UK, Ireland / Car Shipment from Poland to the UK [19]

they can do it:

chartwig.com.pl/index.php?dzial=&od=&lg=en

what you can do is type "spedycja międzynarodowa Gdynia" in google - yes, in Gdynia because most of the transport companies are there around the port and it's 20km from Gdańsk. most of them will have sites in English.

UK, Ireland / Car Shipment from Poland to the UK [19]

ship a car? it's gonna cost you a fortune. you'll do it quicker and cheaper is you go to Poland and drive the car back, unless you're talking about unregistered/smashed car, but I doubt it's that.

There's plenty of garages that bring cars from germany and holland to poland, so they do the trip anyway. don't know any specific one, though. where from in poland you need a car shipped?

History / Polish movies about Poland's role during WWII [20]

try to check out, if possible, BBC archives. they had made really good documentaries about WWII. I've seen one or two about Poland's role in all that.

you could also mention in what language you'd like them. I quietly assumed, it would be English, obviously there should be plenty of them in Polish.

Language / Polish Alphabet - prior to the arival of Christianity [5]

are you sure you can talk about anyhing Polish before Christianity? you know Poland was established somewhere around the year 999/1000, so you've got ten centuries or so difference. perhaps you're referring to some slavic tribal writings then?

UK, Ireland / The Problem i have with Culture Differences (UK + Polish) [32]

She tells me that people arent as 'outgoing' in poland, and sometimes she becomes sick of meeting some of my friends, who are generally quite forward, and confident.
She describes this particular way of living as 'fake'...

it's true. we're not that 'outgoing'. the thing is she hasn't been to uk for long time really.
for a Pole, the ability to respond to the confidence you've said about, is a thing to learn. just stand by her side and she'll be fine, well she'll either get used to and stop even noticing it or she'll work out her own confident way to react to it and won't feel embarrases(?) by it.

i wouldn't know why she describes it as 'fake'. perhaps she just can't find any better way to name it. it is also possible, that due to the fact, that she's surrounded by people who are notorious complainers back in Poland, it is hard for her to believe in the 'other world' she sees in England. also a thing to learn.

ok, i gave you a bit of blabber, really. it's all rather a guess based on my own experiece with discovering a different county.

Life / Are shaved heads a bad idea in Poland? [36]

well, yeah, at first it used to be associated with skinheads, later on things changed and a shaved head became the trademark of gangs made of brainless dudes who spend life at a body building centre and never wear anything else than sportswear. so yes, it is easily associated with the word criminal (shaved empty head and sportswear)

on the other hand, plenty of guys in Poland shave their heads, for comfort, simply, so if you happen to see a shaved head, you might be looking at a student :)

Work / Coming to Poland with Erasmus? [18]

Polytechnics

and now, something completely different:

officially, Politechnika translates to University of Technology
used to be called Technical Univ. but some wise guys have introduced the correct naming of those institutions

Love / Polish men and sex [89]

Any woman who doesn't appreciate flowers, or a kiss on the hand or any of those liitle considerate gestures

...is likely Belgian :).

oh yeah, in here a little of gentleman-like behaviour makes people raise their eyebrows and feel embarrassed. weird, eh?

Love / What does a Polish girlfriend expect from a relationship? [17]

the guy expect the girl to be totaly predictable! have you heard of such a woman? dead man's wish, isn't it?
only teenagers have such dreams and often demands - a person who's perfect, predictable all set as I want her/him to be. Does that answer?

ny02116, indeed, I don't know you, but its you who throws the immaturity card. and from what you have written, i dare to doubt your being fair in it

Language / Software to convert my keyboard to polish [13]

you don't need to download anything.
i guess you work in micro$oft windows.

you just have to change settings of the keyboard device (you'll find it in control panel) to Polish (Programmer's) - this one will have all the Polish signs added to the typical US English keyboard layout

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

Kocham - nothing to do with cultural differences. I'd go with what Jar has said. Your bf's simply an idiot who most likely hasn't got any idea what he wants.

Bolo - excelent!!! This 'hit' of a drunken village party hasn't got any dumber one to compete with.

P.S. funny that this 'bf' abbreviation looks so much like 'BS' to me. maybe there's more to it than just a visual trick. :)

Love / What does a Polish guy expect from a relationship? [54]

well if a guy wants a girl for food and sex (or sex only)... he wants a one night stand, not a relationship, i guess there's more in it that shagging and eating, or am I wrong.

whoever want, feels like or agrees to be, is the cook. when starting/having a relationship do you make deals of a kind: who's the cook here and who vacumes the carpets?

Life / To all of you who are Polish - where did you learn English? [64]

it's not fully dubbed! the voice is added to the original track the same way you can see on interviews on French speaking TV news. I've also seen that way of translating interviews on BBC.

i find it less disturbing than dubbing as you know it ( a matter of habit, perhaps),
but still it's impossible to make much of the original track... there's only a glimpse of the actors' voices

Travel / Going to Poland for vacation and my passport expires.. [4]

your passport as in the international booklet thingy or your British ID (do you actually have those)?
the latter is sufficient when going to Poland, or anywhere within EU.
you can also use your driving license as it's almost exactly the same design as the Polish one and is also a valid ID

I believe, once you're there you can also go to the British Embassy and get a temporary paper in case your passport looses its validity. i don't know, however, if you get it on the spot.

how long would it take to renew your passport in the UK, can't you fix it before the end of the week?
