Law / Invoice Terms in Poland [8]

You can never be sure these days. That's all negotiable with the school. It's usually by the tenth unless otherwise stated.

UK, Ireland / British news: The Poles might be leaving but the prejudice remains [52]

They are part of a supranational entity, szkotja2007. Therefore, it doesn't have full autonomy in a political sense as it doesn't self-govern in all areas. Read Costa Vs ENEL 1964 and the notion of direct effect. I could speak about this notion for a long time if you want.

As for national sovereignty, it has been and is being diluted across the board. Brother, please tell me you are joking. I could give you multiple examples of the loss of sovereignty. It is being whittled away rapidly.

Love / Traditional wedding rings in Poland [11]

Some coordination. I usually don't care much for fashion as I go with what I like. It's important to make the right choice when it comes to rings.

Law / Invoice Terms in Poland [8]

They'll likely be bills and not invoices. Bills (rachunki) are what I use. Invoices (faktury) are generally for VAT-registered users (VATowcy). If you have a financial guy, you can give him documents as proof of purchase with your stamp and theirs. He will deduct a sum from your tax based on the documents thereof.

It depends what your friend arranges with his school. My schools get 14 working days from the date of submission of the bill. You can write przelewem (by transfer) if you wish.

What do you mean by terms, blueboy?

Love / Traditional wedding rings in Poland [11]

I'm getting these at the start of next month. Mine will be engraved with Aniołku. They cost upwards of 1000PLN per pair. Ours will cost 1100PLN. There is flexibility in the colour scheme. My fiancee will chose white gold and I will choose pure gold to match my watch and my hair.

I always wore my ring on my right hand anyway. I had one when I was in secondary school.

UK, Ireland / British news: The Poles might be leaving but the prejudice remains [52]

Increasing sense of national pride? Scotland has always had a sense of pride, szkotja2007. Increasing national pride doesn't always translate to the need to become independent. The Poles, for example, have pride in abundance but they joined the EU rather than remaining an autonomous and highly sovereign nation.

UK, Ireland / British news: The Poles might be leaving but the prejudice remains [52]

Well, Scotland has had its own devolved parliament since 1999 but it was more of a token gesture. Stormont was established in 1926 in NI and has more overall power than its Scottish counterpart.

Many Scots read the Daily Mail, delph. It's nothing new. I think it would surprise you just how many English sympathisers there are. Think of it in an army context also. If Britain was attacked, Scottish, Welsh and English regiments would be called upon. I'd like to think that, were Scotland to be attacked, that the other 2 would come to our rescue and vice-versa.

Anyway, back on topic. What prejudice is this?

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

Well, there were also kids who are not expected to pay so that complicates the picture somewhat. I'd say 100PLN in your case is fine. A nice solid banknote. If you are not enjoying the voluminous food and drink then you are only getting a small part of the deal.

I know that they clawed most of their outgoings back. Some monetary gifts were bigger than others.

News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Eurola, I'm quite sure of it. I am ably assisted by an expert on such matters :) Check it out.

M-G, you are wrong. Słowianin comes from the word 'słowo', given by the Germans. Brak słowo to be exact. Just like Niemcy (Germanic tribes then, now Germany) which means mute/nie mowe.

Then Poles adopted the word słowianie for themselves, just like negroes have adopted the word nig*ers for themselves.

The Russians understood part of the Polish language but the Germans didn't. Poles perceived them as mute because of that.

Słowianin and słowo have the same Polish stem.

Life / How much cash to give as a wedding gift? [25]

I'm Scottish so I dispensed with that requirement ;) ;) Joking aside, I went to my fiancee's bro's wedding and guests gave 400PLN per pair. There were 90 or so guests so you can see how easily they recouped their lavish outgoings. 4000PLNx9 is 36,000 and they paid out just over 30,000PLN.

News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

And quite right. Had they surrendered, they would have been ripe for the pickings. Hail the Serbian spirit of resistance!!

Serbia proved that resistance is not futile. Arkan, love him or hate him, typified that spirit.

On the thread, Poland doesn't need American refugees.

Maybe you should start a 'How Slavic do you feel?' thread, Crow. Just to see how ethnically inclined Poles are. My contention is that they are more nationalistic and patriotic as Poles. Their history has taught them this, to be rugged and club together. Come here and you will see this.

News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Global soup? Interesting phrase. America is very multicultural, that goes without saying (but I said it anyway :)). Poland doesn't want to set off on this path too much as it's going to be imposed somewhere down the line. Crow, you had a thread about Africans flooding Europe. Poland doesn't know what's round the corner. I need to send Rockefeller's book and the CFR/Trilateral Commission's manifesto to Tusk. They bastar*ised the Balkans, they can do it anywhere.

News / What needs to happen in the world so that Poland and Russia form alliance? [297]

Crow, I also wish that my Celtic kinsmen, the SAS, didn't fight my fellow Celtic kinsmen, the IRA, back in the day. Us Scots and Irish should always enjoy a good drink together. However, life is not like that.

To answer your question, some people don't keep abreast of statistical changes. To them, the American dream is very much alive. I know what you want me to answer, though. Russia is much closer but I feel that they need to waiver the VISA requirement for Poles. They have waltzed into Poland numerous times unwanted so they should show a leap of faith and build ties. However, pride gets in the way. They try to outdo each other by looking for differences rather than commonalities/similarities. In my experience, this has become part of the Polish psyche, to look at how what they have is different from other places. It's like a battle of quality. The Russians have their pride too.

In conclusion, the young generation is the best hope. I've been on 2 guided tours with Itaka and it has always been the old feckers who bear grudges and comment on how Poland has the best of everything. The young generation are prepared to drink with their Russian counterparts.

I should give you the GG number of my Polish friend. He likes befriending young Russians and believes Kosovo je Srbija. He is very pan-Slavic.

Food / Popular drink shots in Poland? [28]

Krupnik can be too. Krupnik has 3 meanings or more in Polish. I remember shooting it after beer and I took my time getting off my chair.

My vote for one of the classic joke threads by Greg. The Statue of Liberty mentions the plight of the huddled masses. I think Poland's version contains inverted fingers ;)

News / What needs to happen in the world so that Poland and Russia form alliance? [297]

Crow, please provide details of how many Poles live in America and how many live in Russia. The world is more complicated than you think and allegiances aren't based solely on ethnic kin, FAAAAAR from it.

Poles can prosper more in America than they can from Russia. An elite within Russia tends to hoarde the lion's share of the cash and even the Jews don't flourish there to the extent to which they do in other countries, notably America.

If you doubt that Poles like prosperity, your new nickname will be Ostrich Man and not Crow.

News / Why Polish police officers have to look like dorks....? [43]

I don't think they look like dorks at all. They look pretty tough for the most part. I wouldn't tangle with one and I outweigh most of them. Give me a baton and their power and that may be a different story ;0 ;)

News / PUTIN'S LETTER HAILED BY TUSK POLISH GOVT [17]

There is a concept called sustainable development in the EU. It essentially guides environmental policy but its principles can be applied multifariously. I think Tusk needs to work on creating this with Putin. Individual letters serve as token gestures and actions speak louder than words. It can express the sentiment of that particular moment but Poland needs more than soundbites. Tusk's achilles heel is his ostensible naivety.

My main view is that there just isn't enough cooperation at the present time to warrant unbridled enthusiasm and optimism.
