Life / What do Polish people think of burning the national flags? [58]

While I could never condone the criminalization of the burning of the flag, I'm not sure I could condone the actual activity either. Freedom of Speech allows us to express our opinions and burning the flag certainly does that, but Freedom of Speech also allows us to use our words to express ourselves, to use nuance and irony and layered argument, it allows us the freedom to strive to make our voices heard more intelligently than simply setting fire to an object that means different things to many.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

Expatriot, I don't understand you. You abhor the US for selling Poland to Communism but instruct the Poles to align with the very nation that was implementing that communism. You detest America for putting in missile sheilds that have resulted in Russian missiles aimed at Poland and yet you want Poland to become allies with the same country that would so rashly point it's bombs at its neighbor. You talk about Poland's history and yet you want her to become partners with the country that has caused the most pain during that history. Yes, when Poland made unions with its neighbors she was strong, but Russia has never offered her hand in unity and Poland's strength was meant to protect her from Russia. The only pacts Russia has made as been with other countries...to destroy Poland. I have no desire to become allies with such a nation. Poland wants to stand on her own. She needs help. Even though America has been far from perfect, she'd prefer to get her help from the states then from Russia.

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

It's just that white people, and I am no exception, really have no idea of the inconsistencies in our society. We're so privaledged that we can't see beyond our own noses. This is natural but it doesn't make it right. Two years ago, white people in America were polled and 75% believed that blacks had an equal chance to succeed in America. That might not seem outrageous until you consider that 40 years earlier in 1965, the same poll was given and the same results were found, that 75% felt that Blacks had a fair shake. In 1965! I mean, if we were so wrong then, what's keeping us from being just as wrong now?

Also, Poles may blame history for institutional failures in their country but I'm not aware of any of them blaming history for any individual disappointments they experience.

I'm not aware of any blacks who blame history for individual disappointments, only institutional failures, both in history and on going.

given prison sentences 4x longer

I can't speak for Britain, but this happens every single day in America. Plus, Poles know as well as anyone that history weighs upon you every day no matter if you went through it or not.

Get my facts straight? And what have I gotten wrong, here? If you were told of a people that invaded a country, took the people of that country to a foriegn land and made them slaves, hung thousands of them from trees, then put them in ghettos and prisons, wouldn't allow them to use the same bathrooms or go to good schools, gave them prison sentences 4 times longer, which people would you be frightened of?

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

This is ridiculous. To some how say that whites are in danger in black neighborhoods is unbelievable. Why is this myth of the dangerous black man perpetrated so well? Look at the figures, look at the numbers. It isn't whites being killed and harmed. Why white people think they need to fear blacks when it should be the other way around is beyond me. Wake up, people. The numbers and FACTS aren't in your favor.

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

from my point of view its quite reckless of having kid with black while ur white, racism always have been and always will be, your kid will taste it soon but u wanted a black guy...

So what? Just give up, let racism win, and not be with the one you love because it will be complicated for your kids? What if Rosa Parks said, "Well, I'm going to go to the back of the bus because it would be 'reckless' for me to demand the right to sit where I want to?" It might be difficult but people need to blaze those trails to make things better.

Love / My polish girlfriend has changed following death of dad.. [153]

I am sorry to hear that. I understand that your heart was in the right place, and you should know that too. Grief does such strange things to people that there's no one way to handle it. That's a shame.

Love / My polish girlfriend has changed following death of dad.. [153]

Everybody greives differently. For some it's a few weeks for others it's years. You must respect the request for space. Change does strange things to people, especially permanent change like a death, and when things that were certain in one's life for their entire life vanish, they begin to question everything. Don't ask her what she needs, she'll come to you. All you can do, my friend, is be there for her when she needs you. It won't do any good to press the issue. My girlfriend and I had a good friend die in a car accident 6 months ago. It was one of my girlfriend's best friends and she took it real hard. Even now it's a touchy subject and for a good 3-4 months she was prone to bursting out in uncontrollable tears. It's better now, but that's just a good friend, I can't even imagine what would happen if it was a family member. She'll let you know what she needs, just don't press.

Food / Polish hot toddy? [9]

There is a drink called Krupnik, that is warm vodka with cloves and cinnamon (very good on a winter day). But it contains no whisky. However, if you have a cold, some Krupnik would clear that out in a hurry.

History / Should Pope John Paul II Be Know as "The Great" [12]

I'm in no way saying he's not deserving of the title "Great." I'm just saying that the man's accomplishments and deeds speak to his greatness more than a tacked on, posthumous title would.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

This might not interest you, Miranda, but I'd go visit Yankee Stadium. They're tearing the old girl down after this year and it's one of America's premier sports arenas. Only 6 more months and it will be gone forever.

But I find its best NOT to go sightseeing in NY. I mean there are a few things (the museum of modern art, the metropolitan opera house) but the big apple can be experience in tourist stops. Just walk around Central Park, or Brooklyn. Go into a hole in the wall deli, or movie theater. That's how you see New York.

History / Jewish love towards Poles [389]

'Borat' AKA Sasha Cohen

Also, I don't know if you meant this on purpose as an insult, if you did that's egg on my face, but Sasha Baron Cohen in the actor, simply Sasha Cohen is a figure skater.

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

A little mystery is sexy to me. I like women who say what they mean and don't play games but a little withholding of information can be inticing. Skin is great but my imagination is better and when a woman can give me just enough to use mine, that's sexy. When a woman's dancing and the music is slow but has a beat. Sweat, the small of a woman's back, class, confidence. Big eyes, soft hands, being feminine but being strong minded, opinionated but reserved. Women are sexy, that's the bottom line. If they're redheaded, that's a plus.

History / Should Pope John Paul II Be Know as "The Great" [12]

I've a got a bottle opener that a friend got me from Italy that was bless by John Paul. It has a picture of the Vatican on one side and of JP on the other. I call it the "Popener." He certainly was a great man and a brilliant Pope and I would certainly be behind any movement to canonize him, but I don't see any need to make him John Paul II the Great or anything like that. To my estimation his life was a 80 year mission to one day be renamed "Great." I don't think he did the things he did for that purpose. I know the point would be to honor him and I'm all for that, people know he was great. Adding "The Great" to Pope's names seems like a throwback to a more corrupt and self-fulfilling time. Maybe I'm just being a stick in the mud though...

Life / I feel the gay rights movement is constrained Poland [90]

That's more or less right, JustysiaS. But technically the Catholic Church doesn't mind if you're gay. You just can't be a PRACTICING homosexual. This of course makes no sense, but sometimes the Catholic Church and common sense don't always see eye to eye.

I am not a racist but I will never date black guy I am attractive only to white guys

Life / I feel the gay rights movement is constrained Poland [90]

I think that's the point. A "Straight Pride Parade" would be as ridiculous as a "White History Month" or a "Men's Liberation." The point of "Gay Pride Parades" as far as I can tell is to announce that these people don't feel that their lifestyle is anything to be ashamed of and, most importantly that despite what society says, they are proud of themselves.

Life / I feel the gay rights movement is constrained Poland [90]

They are tolerated in Poland but let them don't expect others to look up to them.

Yeah, wanting respect and being treated with human decency? How uncooth of them.

What do you think poland should do? is treating homosexuals like second class citizens a violation of human rights or should the people be able to live in a country in which their beliefs are reflected?

The problem is not a specific Polish problem, it's a world problem. Gays aren't fully socially accepted nearly all over the world. The situation might be worse in Poland becuase she is a highly Catholic country, therefore the solution starts and ends with the Catholic church and other religions. Once they realise that they can't "love thy neighbor" and "damn gays to hell" at the same time, the problem will begin to solve itself. BUt this is a millennia year old distrust so it's not going to be solved over night.

Love / Polish girls and this age thing? [173]

I think you often see women with older men because men generally age better. In our sexist society, older women lose their physical attractiveness to men much quicker and much more than men. Men get "distinguished" as they age PLUS they have experience and maturity, a win-win. It's a shame because often very pretty women with great personalities get left behind because they've "lost it" physically, even though they still have great personalities. Yet older men can still be considered attractive.

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

No, lets be honest, she was being a slapper, and totally heartless in not caring that she was destroying someones family.

She was the only one making a decision here? It takes two to cheat. And the woman wasn't married.
