News / New York Post : "Polish" Death Camps and more [278]

Yeah.....sure....lifelong house arrest for Galileo, burned at a stake for Giordano Bruno...Darwin...even Copernicus....my what a light the church was for all researcher and truth seeker! :):)

This was not Christianity; these were men acting out for their own good at the expense of others.

Similar to Hitler and Germany.

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

I teach and if I happen to do that within the framework of some political system, then so be it as it's merely coincidental.

A hypothetical:

If you're a science teacher in the SU in the 1950s would you be indifferent to teaching the theory of Lysenkoism?

So many have cashed in from capitalism and used options not available under communism.

Seanus,

For the record you'd consider the triumph of capitalism over communism a good thing correct?

History / THEY WOULDN'T LISTEN TO WISE OLD PIŁSUDSKI!!!! [67]

Had Piłsudski's notion of a federation of Poland, Lithuania and Ukraine -- a throwback to the Rzezpospolita Obojga Naroidów -- been accepted, teh Soviet Union would have probably collapsed before it got going.

Possibly; but without a firm commitment from the West, especially the English (David Lloyd George, the English prime minister, who decided to lift the Royal Navy’s blockade of Russia just as the Civil War seemed to be turning against the Reds) the Soviets were granted new life.

News / Petition the Prime Minister to Recognise the contribution of Polish Armed Forces [49]

That's an interesting interpretation. Do you have any sources which support it?

Clement Attlee and Labour's desire to build better ties with the Soviets invited Communist Poland to take part in the parade. At the same time, in an action to appease Stalin, Labour barred Poles fighting under British command.

Ernest Bevin was all too eager to stick the Poles into the maelstrom by stating that it was the Poles' "duty" to "return to their home country without further delay".

The RAF protested, who backed their Polish brothers, protested. In the end Labour relented and belatedly (with great unhappiness) invited the fliers.

The Polish pilots, in solidarity to their brothers in the army and navy, refused.

Winston Churchill: "They will be in our hearts on that day."

Air Marshall Phillip Joubert de Ferte: "Are we too feeble to stand up to those who attempt to bully us?"

Harold Macmillan to General Anders: "With all the legitimate joy and pride in every British heart will be mingled much sorrow and even shame."

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

"Internment camps pre-WWII or concentration camps pre-WWII?"

Neither actually. Do pay attention to history, you might learn something from it.

I know there is no difference. I want you to commit to definition, or in other words, commit your head to the noose.

I am paying attention to history; your history as a participant of this board. To date, ad hominem attacks appear to be your specialty.

but when the USA needed a site for an illegal prison, Poland steps right up

If you're of English descent I'd get off your high horse on this one.

Question asked of Harry...

If you're saying the Poles ran extermination camps free of foreign influence pre-WWII than cite your source.

sjam replies...

Polish extermination camps as characterised by Germans extermination camps? Undeniably—no.

Polish internment and concentration camps? Undeniably—yes.

sjam,

I am trying to get 'Mr. Literal' a.k.a. Harry, to commit to a definition.

News / The Polish-Hungarian friendship is as well as poisoned [45]

it was high treason to betray an ally.

Only the attempt to kill Hitler on July 20, 1944, which created confusion among the occupying German authorities in Hungary, provided Horthy enough freedom to block the deportation of Jews and anyone else from Budapest.

I do not believe the penalty for "not being polite" by breaking an alliance, an alliance with the devil, should be the systematic liquidation of the citizenry.

History / World War II - a tragic story for Poland and the World [489]

There was never a single partition of Poland!

Sure, Poland was never partitioned:

1772: Prussia, Russia, Austria

Remember what Fredrick the Great said about devouring Polish provinces "like an artichoke, leaf by leaf"?

Prussia & Russia increased their territory in 1792, the second partition.

All three: Prussia, Russia, Austria obtained more territory in 1794. The Commonwealth was erased; this was the third partition.

And let us not forget the partition of 1939: the Soviet - Nazi partition.

Don't whine about what the Germans did or not did, you do happily the same if you can!

You mean the Polish armed forces would murder, enslave, or hold hostage innocent civilians just as the German armed forces did in WWI & WWII?

Hitler was just another politician. The same as Chamberlain, Petain and many others. Before September 39' there wasn't any gas chambers, mass murders etc.

History / Western Europe and America vs Russia WWII - chances of Poland being saved [494]

Enough to allow Soviet industrial production to recover from early German successes and meet the increased equipment requirement Soviet forces needed to defeat the Nazis on the Eastern Front.

Excellent point... At the end of the war the Soviets were in no position to push west. They did not have the necessary manpower, did not have the logistics, and did not have the quality of air power that the allies had.

How many of the 1600 russian tanks shot down at Kursk had been T-34's...hmmm...:)

The most important point to be made about the Kursk operation is this: If the Germans were smart they never would have engaged the Soviets at Kursk.

Your point being what? That the Russians could mass produce a rugged killing machine? Thus the number of Russian tanks to be killed just happened to be the T-34? Are you sure all of those kills were due to the "flawed" T-34 and not the individual responsible for the T-34?

So what was the best tank in WW2?

Hands down the T-34. The T34 was tough, maneuverable, reliable, and could cross virtually any type of terrain.

King Tiger

The main gun specification of the King Tiger was a hybrid of the 88mm anti-aircraft gun. Although the 88mm was initially designed for an anti aircraft role, it proved to be an excellent tank killer.

The King Tiger was not an open field tank. Because of the size and weight of the King Tiger had its share of problems. It suffered mechanically with many breakdowns and had poor maneuverability. The infrastructure (roads/bridges) was not suitable for a tank of this size. The fuel requirements of the King Tiger were enormous. Many King Tigers were abandoned due to lack of fuel rather then being destroyed during the offensive in the Ardennes.
