History / Scotland and Poland. Mutual connections since 1576 [45]

I have a theory, with no real evidence to back it up.

Is it possible that some of those with Scottish roots were in fact Border Reivers ?

This is a group of people who would fit into any army, as mercenaries. Great horsemen with fighting skills to match.

The Border Reivers were kicked out of northern England - southern Scotland in the late 1500's early 1600's. Either that or hanged without trial.

News / Eye on Poland: Country at the crossroads Oct 6-10 [4]

This looks like it will be very interesting. Anyone else planning to watch?

If it's on I'll watch it.

If only to see if there's any mention of the 4th biggest city, Wroclaw.

Solidarity Avenue, the Chopin Monument, and the Palace of Culture and Science are just some of the backdrops

A true reflection of the whole of Poland !!

Love / Need advice re: Polish man. What can I do to make him interested? [50]

he doesn't wear a wedding ring

Neither do I. It doesn't mean I'm not married.

Are you looking at the correct hand ? His wedding ring, if worn, would be on his right hand.

One evening he showed me some Polish coins.

In my day it used to be etchings.

I have it really bad!

Simple. Ask him out. You are both adults !!

Life / Poems for Poland. [41]

A Dubious Poem.

The lakes in summer
People sailing
The lakes in winter
Frozen over

The cities and towns
Growing fast
The cities and towns
Beautiful squares

The mountains to the east
Tall and mighty
The mountains to the west
Gentle and calm

The Baltic Sea
For fun
The Baltic Sea
For amber

The history of Poland
Strength and hope
The history of Poland
Relates my past

Farms and villages
Too few cows
Farms and villages
In need of help

Life / Is Dining Out Popular in Poland? [9]

Thats what Ive seen. Polish people like to make their own food.

I have to disagree with this somewhat. Twenty years ago there were very few quality restaurants. Now they are all over the place. Some places you have to wait for a seat or book in advance.

A glimpse at the listings for any city will show what's on offer. Regardless of home cooked food, people do dine out. More than they ever did.

It is a sign of the positive economy.

Life / Is Dining Out Popular in Poland? [9]

sushi is quite pricey everywhere, isn't it?

It is in Wroclaw. But the Sushi bars in Wroclaw are often full.

There are many restaurants in Wroclaw serving a variety of food. Times are a changing.
I'm happy to spend money on good food about once a month. Not sushi though.
As you would expect, most people dining out are couples.

Folks with money dine out. I don't know how often though.
Sushi Bars seem to be in fashion at the moment.

Travel / Poznan-Berlin train fare [8]

Wroclaw - Berlin - Wroclaw via Poznan is about 120zl

I'd expect to pay about 90zl Poznan - Berlin - Poznan

Wroclaw Station has a separate ticket office for this service. Poznan may be the same.

The trains on this service are usually good and have a power-supply for laptops.

Edit: it should be possible to work out the price as it is based on each km travelled, plus type of service.

UK, Ireland / English husband cannot live with his Polish wife and child in the UK [19]

i will almost deffinately have to go to Poland.

The case will be held behind closed doors

You must be there

You will need a sworn translator

The judge will probably ask simple questions... for your benefit.

Make sure the court knows exactly what you have to offer.

Offer: Christmas, Easter and a good part of the Summer holiday. (maybe offer more than he can cope with, if you see what I mean)

UK, Ireland / English husband cannot live with his Polish wife and child in the UK [19]

I respect the fathers poistion here and i will always try to remain neutral.

To remain neutral will get nothing done. Speak to the father and offer a compromise. School holidays in Poland etc

Also, find out what the child would like.

Is the child at school yet ?

Edit: The child needs the father's permission to leave the country.

Travel / Intriguing piece of sculpture in Wroclaw [7]

I think it should be mentioned that the people who seem to be waiting at the crossing (top left) are also part of the same sculpture. Some folks might not notice them, if they are concentrating on the figures in the foreground.

Is there a mods on-line feature that I'm missing ?

If there isn't one... can we have one please.

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

I am sure we will see some action on Russia's part soon.

Polish business with Russia has been building up... both large and small companies.

Some of these companies are now worried about their present and future investment.

News / Tornado hits Poland [39]

Non-stop rain here. It was worse yesterday, but only because of a couple of (mild)thunder storms. It is difficult to report because I'm in the middle of the city and can't see beyond the end of the street.

Family up north (on the coast) have said today the weather is fine.

Food / Polish meat shops in Wroclaw, Poland [6]

nickyspaghetti [Guest]

Try and catch the driver when he delivers the meat to the shop. Then see if a quiet word gets you what you want. After all, he is coming directly from the place where the meat is carved up.

Genealogy / Do I Look Polish? (my grandfather was Polish) [60]

So, do I look Polish?

It's not such an easy question to answer. I have three girls in the house and no two of them look the same. And two of them are sisters.

I'm sure that we all have characteristics that might fit. I'm not sure about your eyes...maybe yes maybe no. Your cheeks and the lower part of your face look too full.

Genealogy / Family name Benka. [5]

But I cannot find out about my Dads older Brother

This would be your uncle, yes ?

To be honest I don't know how to find him.

But. He may still be alive and in the phone book.. He may have had children who carried on the family name..

It is possible to search the phone book, but you need an address.
The easiest way to find people with the same name is to search: nasza klasa

I would find a town or city website (for the town in Poland or nearest big town) with a forum and leave a message. Some Polish city websites also have genealogy help. And more important... pages in English

There is a link somewhere on here for old polish directories. They might help with an old address.

Do I understand correctly. Your dad's sister has no info on you dad's brother (her brother) Or is your dad's sister now deceased.

I'll have to have a little think about this, but unfortunately on Monday I'll be off-line for a month.

News / POLAND TO SIGN US MISSILE SHIELD DEAL TONIGHT [239]

Poland walks on egg shells while she becomes independant

What part of history are you living in. Poland is independent.

Why do you feel Russia is upset with Poland protecting herself, do they have this right and in fact they give there "anti missle shield to Iran" and it's ok as long as they pick who gets it?

Any missile that comes from a rogue state is likely to pass over Russia to get to us. It might be more beneficial to have an agreement with them (Russia) rather than the USA, don't you think ?

Any missile from Iran and heading for the US will not pass over Polish territory. So again, what's the point.
