Life / Holiday's in Poland! Not allowed thanksgiving off. [30]

Anyone have any thoughts about his reaction?

Your Polish boss was right. This is Poland, not US. How about Poles in US demanding a day off on Polish national holidays? Ridiculous, wouldn`t it?

Language / Telephone numbers in Polish - what pronunciation? [3]

That is, is each digit said in isolation, as we do in English (eg 617345...six-one-seven-three-four-five).. or is the 'paired' form used? (eg sixty one - seventy three -forty five).

No isolated numbers. We use tens and hundreds. A typical Krakow number: 012 -647-25-37.
zero twelve - six hundred and forty seven - twenty five - thirty seven.
zero dwanaście- sześćset czterdzieści siedem - dwadzieścia pięć - trzydzieści siedem.

However, I always say my numbers with isolated digits because it is easier. People are sometimes surprised hearing me.

Real Estate / Anyone who knows how to find accommodation in Cracow? [7]

Well it is in the centre but it's not really an apartment its just a room in an apartment shared with others, so I think it's kind of expensive considering what you get for the price.

How much do you rent it ouy for and where is it located? I'm going to study att Cracow university of economics, is it anywhere near that?

It is obviously overpriced. You can get 1 bedroom flat of your own for this price.

I strongly advise you to contact our forum`s member, Andy B. He works in an estate agency in Krakow. I am sure he will be able to help.

News / Lithuania, Poland Leaders Warn EU Against Russia Talks [33]

Well said. But still I don't understand why Polish Gov always puts obstacles on the Russian way...

You have been misinformed.

The obstacles have been put by two Presidents: Kaczyński and Adamkus.

But the foreign policy in Poland is primarily run by the government led by Prime Minister Tusk.

To the best of my knowledge, Polish government hasn`t put forward any objections to EU talks with Russia.

The Union's foreign ministers yesterday (10 November) decided to proceed with negotiations over a new EU-Russia basic treaty, disregarding the objections of small member state Lithuania.

Despite this, in view of the political importance of the matter, the Commission and the Council had made huge efforts to make a unanimous decision. Several countries, including Poland, agreed with the view that negotiating with Russia was the best way to defend EU interests.

Crow, why do you misinform people in the forum?

Life / WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING (ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA) IN POLAND? [52]

Poland rips them away from America. In fact, Poles don't even celebrate American Holidays properly.

Not wrong but adapted to our needs, Triger. We already have Polish holidays on which we pay respect to our family, so St. Valentine`s Day was adopted as a festival for people in love because it was missing in Polish culture.

Life / WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING (ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA) IN POLAND? [52]

It is the one American holiday similar to Wigilia in that people gather with their loved ones to thank God for their blessings.

If Poles have a similar holiday as you said, why should we adopt Thanksgiving?

But what about our old tradition like 'dozynki'?

Yes, dożynki or Harvest Festival is a nice holiday...

History / German POWs after WW2 - did the allies commit mass murder? [228]

Instead of blaming allies for acts of genocide which certainly took place, Germans should blame Hitler and their own blind adherence to his leadership and crazy ideals.

It seems that even by conservative estimates, the allies suffered a complete moral collapse following their triumph over evil. What do you guys know about it.

It is natural that the fight against paranoic murderers sent by Hitler to conquer the world had a considerable impact on allies` morals. When dealing with murderers, you must resort to murder too. It is normal.

One example: in the beginning of the war, while Poland was still fighting a lonely fight in September 1939, French and British bombers flew air raids over Germany to drop.... propaganda leaflets. A joke was created in Britain then: A RAF pilot returns from his mission and reports he had to drop the leaflets in the unopened container because there was some emergency or fault in plane`s systems. A high-rank officer exclaimed: Are you crazy? It could have hurt someone down there!!!

So, you see, allies tried to be gentle with Germans at first.

But soon they learnt how to conduct a total war. Germans taught them.

History / Sarmatia Europe - Could it be political reality? [183]

here, we trying to talk about sistem which can put Slavs in better position

Your hidden message is quite obvious here.

When you say Slavs, you mean Serbs.
When you say in a better position, you mean regain Kosovo.

Don`t you? :):):)

It has already been said here: 70% Poles are satisfied with EU.
Why do you want to persuade them they are wrong?

History / Sarmatia Europe - Could it be political reality? [183]

idea of `Sarmatia Europae` (let`s use this term) becoming reality and that more and more people realize that EU isn`t solution. Not that EU isn`t solution but EU must be recognized as part of problem and should be replaced with something what promissing better and sustain future for Slavs and those who see itself in close relations with Slavs.
EU is German tool and let it just continue to serve Germany. There is available alternative for Slavs.

Currently, Slavic countries are too poor to play an important role in Europe.

When the budget of Slavic countries exceeds that of Germany and other Western European powers, we will talk about replacing EU with sth else.

But it is certainly not going to happen during our lifetime.

Simply speaking: There is no alternative.

Conclusion: Forget Sarmatia Europe.

Travel / Best way to travel to Krakow from Gdynia? [5]

During the summer we drove from Kraków to Hel in 10 hours. We covered 710 kilometers. The average fuel consumption was 12 litres of autogas per 100. The cost of it - about 200 zlotys.

In another thread you are asking about parking sites. So, finally you have decided to drive to Krakow, haven`t you? Why? :):):)

Travel / Parking in Krakow [9]

There is a real problem with in in Krakow. Old parkings were liquidated, new ones haven`t been completed yet.

Currently there is no real parking in the center. You must try to look for space in streets leading to the square. One hour costs 3 zlotys.

See the map of parking zones.

krakow.come2europe.eu/o_miescie/komunikacja/samochod_w_krakowie

You can park your car in Galeria Krakowska, next to the railway station.

I often park my car in Plac Biskupi, not far from The Barbican.

News / Why is Tusk still Polish PM? [67]

Dear Sasha,

I am sorry for not replying to your letter earlier but I have been very busy recently.

I am writing my reply now to tell you that your piece of advice is directed wrongly. It would suit a Pole who participates in a Russian forum, introduces the topic of Katyn there and argues with Russian members.

However, this one here is the Polish forum and we are free to discuss all Polish topics, even such painful ones as Katyń. Being a non-Polish Russian guest, you must accept this fact. If you can`t, why are you still here?

The next thing I must tell you is that again you are wrong trying to compare Polish Katyń to Serbian Kosovo. It is a comparison that only a total ignorant could make. I am not going to elaborate on the Polish intellectual elite murdered by bolsheviks in the Soviet Union, whereas Serbs were "only" expelled.

The greatest difference here, in my opinion, is in the action advocated by two sides, I mean Crow and Poles. Crow demands a Slavic crusade into Kosovo and tries to lure Poland into it. The crusade would naturally mean bloodshed, suffering and extermination of Albanian Kosovars. Whereas Poles are not going to war with Russia over Katyń. They are not even going to war with individual Russians. You can live, work and love in our country without being harassed or held respoinsible for the Massacre.

That is why I think that Polish discussions about Katyń are harmless as they only pertain to past history. On the other hand, Crow`s fanaticism pertains to present and near future, and implies killing on a mass scale.

Do you see now how mistaken you were? I think you do.

Thank you for your patient perusal of this letter.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours

Pawian

News / Why is Tusk still Polish PM? [67]

ne. My `thank you` was honest thank you. I didn`t know what to tell you. I know that after your well formulated reply was impossible to me to try to convince you that Kosovo crisis isn`t even start yet.

Kosovo crisis is finished. There are practically no Serbs there. Several thousand who remain are deprived of any political power and have to be protected by UN forces. And if Serbia starts a new war to regain Kosovo, it will be smashed, let alone losing a chance to access the EU.

How could you understand that when you sit somwhere and didn`t expirienced absolute hate what was given to Serbs by NATO and EU.

It was discussed here many times, that is the hate that Serbs brought on their heads by themselves, for example mercilessly shelling Sarajevo.

But, on the end, it isn`t something new to us. We recognized `drang nach osten` behind all that evil.

Are you sure you got the direction right? In case of Serbia, I think it is Drang nach Süden???

In the future, Poles would recognize same threat. Its inevitable. You would found it, no mater that you can`t believe that exactly that coming to you in `distant` future.

Poles got rid of the thought of the threat by accepting the Polish access to the European Union in 2004. Today, about 70% Poles still suport the Union and are glad Poland is in it. Do you suggest that 70% Poles are morons?

In the menwhile, Serbians would beat them because you know, border of Slavic world is violated. Evil MUST retreat

You cherish illusions like a boy who plays with his toy soldiers on the carpet of his bedroom. You know that Serbia can`t move a finger, otherwise it will be smashed....

so, just sit, observe and don`t underestimate Serbians, if you feel that it is right- give moral support to Serbs, at least.

Being a Christian, I can give moral support to Serbs who in a Christian way adapt to the current situation.

If you believe that you are Polish and that you and your children need to be Polish and if there is something in your head, you would pray that Serbs push THEM back

I am sorry. As a Christian, I think it would be a sin to say prayers for Serbs pushing anybody back.... You see, I don`t support murder, and that`s what Serbs would have to do to push them back.

News / Why is Tusk still Polish PM? [67]

May I give you a piece of advice?

If you participate in this forum, attempting to arouse sympathy and support for the Serbian cause from the Polish nation, my advice is the following: Forget it.

The truth is brutal: Poles have bigger problems than Serbia and Kosovo. Things have gone too far there and nothing will be like in the past again. Kosovo is lost for Serbia and the sooner you understand it, the better. Stop wasting your time trying to persuade Poles to stand up for Racowie because it is all in vain.

Instead of starting futile discussions about Kosovo and silly musings about Polish PM Tusk, , why don`t you work hard to make Serbia really great, I mean economically. Do your best in some nice office or factory in Belgrade and after some time your country will prosper. It will be enough if it is strong without being Great.

News / Why is Tusk still Polish PM? [67]

Tusk, compared to previous PM, Kaczyński, looks and sounds a very agreeable man.

That is why the support for him hasn`t diminished. We will see if it is kept in the future, but for the time being Tusk has the biggest chance to win presidential elections in 2010.

Don`t be silly. Kashubs are regular Poles. They have never wanted to seperate from Poland, they died for it during WW2.

News / I support creation of Great Poland [134]

You are brainwashing the children to be "Europeans" rather than Poles?

Don`t be silly. How can kids who speak the Polish language and stick to Polish culture forget they are Polish???
We teach them that apart from being Polish they are also European. You can`t deny that Poland is in Europe, can you? :):):)

Photos from a Polish kindergarten. What two European nations do these kids represent on European Union Day?

Your interpretation of history was wrong.

News / I support creation of Great Poland [134]

you know for those Catholic priests in Poland who were henged by German occupators in WWII?

They also were Polish inteligentsia

Not only by Germans, By nationalist Lithuanians, Ukrainians too.

But the times have changed. The majority of Germans are not Nazi today. Stop thinking in past terms.

What you propose, this whole idea of Great Poland, which in the past meant the subjugation of Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus under the Polish rule, means the same what happened to Poland duiring WW2. Extermination of Polish nation.

I understand you are doing everything to help Serbia regain Kosovo and other territories.
But do you really need to mix Poland into it?

You boys must play alot of video games.
Bedroom Generals.

Very correct. Your remark brought tears into my eyes.

My favourite strategic games in 1990s:
1. Civilisation 1 and 2.
2. Age of Empires.
3. Imperialism.
4. Europa Universalis.

Also The Conquest of the New World.

News / I support creation of Great Poland [134]

let it be written that i as a Serbian support all eventual Polish intentions to create vast Polish state which should protect Slavs from Baltic to Balkan, from Lusatia to Ukraine

i even urge on Polish inteligentsia to boost its efforts. By Serbian logic Sarmatia is Sarmatia, particular title of state is just technical detail, heritage is important and it would be all right. So, i`m sure that majority of Serbs (Orthodox and Catholic) could support this idea and be very loyal cityzens of that powerful Slavic state

I also believe that Russia would support this and similar intentions

Being an intelligent Polish man, a representative of the class called intelligentsia in Poland, quite well acquianted with reality (teachers must be down-to-earth, must`nt they? ), I can say only one thing: this is one giant crap.

Life / Unusual Sightings in Warsaw - millions of black crows... [22]

Switezianka: BTW, they can't be ravens, ravens are very rare in Poland.
I think the Warsaw ones are ravens (kruki) - quite different to crows of which there are plenty too.

No. Switezianka is correct. They couldn`t be ravens. Neither were they crows. So what?
They were rooks.

Nesting

[i]Nesting is always colonial, usually in the very tops of the trees. Branches and twigs are broken off trees (very rarely picked up off the ground), though as many are likely to be stolen from nearby nests as are collected from trees. Eggs are usually 3-5 in number, can appear by the end of February or early March and are incubated for 16-18 days. Both adults feed the young, which are fledged by the 32nd or 33rd day.

In autumn, the young birds of the summer collect into large flocks together with unpaired birds of previous seasons, often in company with Jackdaws. It is during the autumn that spectacular aerial displays can be seen by adult birds that seem to delight in the autumn gales.
