History / Bielski Brothers - does anyone know the story? [38]

Personally I know bits and pieces of the story but don't wish to get into a debate about them.

The movie you are talking about is "Defiance" which is just recently released.

Food / What First Polish Dish I Should Make? [30]

placki ziemniaczane,

Yes it's true. I am making these often now and they are very easy. Although, I like to add plenty of pepper so I make them quite hot. ;) Sometimes I don't add pepper but I'll add garlic instead. It's good to experiment. :D

Travel / IC Train window seats [3]

How can I know which rows these might be, so that I can avoid sitting next to a wall next time I travel? Just wanna watch the views to make the time go by...

Contact the service provider. They should be able to help you out. This site polrail.com - PolRailService may be able to help you out. At the very least you can contact them and ask customer service.

Life / HATPINS & KEY-RINGS V MUGGERS? [12]

for women to hold onto long (5-6 inch) hatpins in one hand.

Isn't it a bit inconvenient to be carrying hat pins around all the time? It's a bit like saying, everytime you go out you're going to be attacked. That's not true. I have been followed during the day, never mind at night but I walked into a shop and stayed there until the guy was gone. Anyway, that doesn't stop me walking or taking a bus late at night. It's about being sensible.

Besides, if I take a swing at some guy and damage him with a hatpin I'll end up in court because if I am carrying those pins "in case" I get attacked then the courts would say I planned to attack someone unless I could prove self-defence.

Life / Polish militaria stores/markets? [11]

Or Allegro as the Polish equivalent.

Oh yes of course. :) Probably better to have some knowledge of the Polish language for Allegro though...

Life / Polish militaria stores/markets? [11]

All polish military equipment has never been used and only dropped once.

How would you know?

PolskaMan, does it have to be in those places? You can have a look on Ebay. It may help. :)

News / ENGLISH STILL PROFITABLE IN POLAND? [78]

classes aren't the model of flexibility

I know, that's why I earlier said:

There's a call for private, flexible tutors here.

;)

If I was thinking about moving to Poland just to teach English I would think about it and set myself up as a tutor here instead. :)

mafketis

Good post.

If a person is serious about making a difference then they'll move to Poland properly not just to make a quick zloty.

Are the classes in Poland flexible? Here it's difficult for a lot of my Polish friends to get on English courses because they are in school/college hours and their places of work can't be flexible around that.

News / ENGLISH STILL PROFITABLE IN POLAND? [78]

I don't know about still being profitable in Poland but it should be profitable in the UK. There's a call for private, flexible tutors here.

would you advise them to come to Poland based only on their native-speakership?

No. They should really have more reason than that to re-locate from the USA to Poland.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

Krakow`s population is about 800.000, including uni students

That's about three hundred thousand more than Edinburgh. Although the same number of hospitals and staff have to cope when the festival causes the city to swell by double.

Ooops, not too many. :):)

No you're right. The Kids hospital has an emergency room though. :

There are about a dozen hospitals in K.

Our other hospitals might be ones you'd go to for long term convalescence. Mostly the elderly go there though.

Yes, the time varies

As it does here but I would be very surprised if anyone here was in and out in 25 minutes.

Look at this X-ray. Do you see anything? He claims it hurts him...

I love X-rays. :) This one looks normal though. He probably just bashed it hard. ;)

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

What is the difference between this Polish hospital and the ones in the West?

Well, it looks pretty much like some of our hospitals in the UK of course. Waiting times seem to be easier in Krakow. How many emergency rooms do you have in Krakow? In Edinburgh we have one emergency room on the outskirts of the city. We have a minor injuries clinic but they are not always useful (for example I was told by my GP to go there with a suspected broken hand and when I got there they said they couldn't x-ray and I had to go to the main hospital). We have various non-emergency hospitals. There is one more emergency room in a town outside of Edinburgh plus we have the Sick Kids hospital.

Waiting times can vary here depending on how busy the emergency room is. I think for what you described it would still be over an hour even in a relatively quiet period here. (I'm glad it was nothing serious for your son. :)

I pray not to get to british hospitals- dirty, overcrowded with looong queues for everything.

Go private then. Or stop bashing something you don't have any experience of. Having spent time in the hospitals here I can safely say I was never worried about the cleanliness of them. I have been rushed to Accident and Emergency on a Saturday night and I have not a bad word to say about anything even though the hospitals was busy, busy. The staff were angels.

that I had to wash my hands with a special substance. Ultra hygienic.

Usually alcohol gel, since the outbreaks of MRSA it's usually required.

News / POLISH TV CHEF MACIEJ KUROŃ DEAD AT 48 [7]

The cause of death of the quite overweight Maciej was not initally announced.

It says "heart attack" in this very short article. Didn't his Dad just die about only 3 or 4 years ago?

Life / Wigilia Greetings - When is the best time to send them? [11]

When do most people sit down to the Wigilia feast?

In the evening I think. I'm not sure about the greetings. I have had a lot of texts from Polish friends already and it's just noon.

UK, Ireland / WHY DO POLISH PEOPLE THAT COME TO ENGLAND CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH? [118]

because they give work to cheap labour force knowing this "labour force" won't be able to satisfy the customer.

That's an interesting outlook. Whether or not anyone is interested or cares, if you desire to work within the care sector now you must possess or be working towards an SVQ level 2 (at least in Scotland). My company (which is a centre of training and excellence apparently) took on a method which ultimately meant that the candidate (student) actually had to write almost nothing. Perhaps 6 lines per unit. When I queried why I was told that the certificate was now geared towards people who do not speak English. My reply was this "if you want people to gain a certificate in this field of work within this company then you will assess their progess using the English language. This is due to the fact that they wish to practice their skills in settings which use the English language. You will not assess their progress in this field of work in any other language other than English. If they fail to pass this qualification then they will not be able to attend to vulnerable adults in this setting without the supervision of an qualified member of staff." Speaking English becomes more a priority.

UK, Ireland / WHY DO POLISH PEOPLE THAT COME TO ENGLAND CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH? [118]

sorry for my horrendous language my lovely moderator (is that better?)

Hmm, I think I'll let that one slide then... ;)

is true that is up to the individual , but what is not normal is go to a country expecting that everybody speak english.sadly the english people have this wrong attitude :(

It may or may not be that the English have the wrong attitude. I sincerely doubt there are many who moved to Poland and expected English to be widely spoken there though. Especially those who moved to Poland say ten years or more ago.

i would like to know how many english people living in poland from this forum can speak polish , (only seanus and the others teacher probably )

I think the number of ex-pats in PL who speak Polish is reasonably high. I sincerely doubt they would get by in Poland with English only so probably picked up Polish along the way.

UK, Ireland / WHY DO POLISH PEOPLE THAT COME TO ENGLAND CAN'T SPEAK ENGLISH? [118]

why do english people that come to poland cant speak polish?
why do english people that come to spain cant speak spanish?

i have been in so many bars in spain where i have to speak english because the fuc*ing waiter cant speak spanish , so fuc* this thread

Despite your horrendous language you do have a point. Large amounts of Brits do head off to live abroad in countries where English is not the first language but they have no clue of the native language of that country. It's entirely up to the individual to improve their language skills in that country.
