Genealogy / Searching the Polish Form of Name (Manuela, Imanuela) [17]

Manu,

Here is a list of 'Name Day' names. It might be of some help.

Names in Poland had to follow a code of practice up until recently.

The list may be incomplete.

Travel / Vacation in Wroclaw in June with 20 Month Old Baby [6]

There is quite a lot of info on the various websites about Wroclaw, but it becomes a bit repetative after visiting a few of them.

However, here is something about parks.

wroclaw-online.eu/24,Wroclaw_-_the_City_of_Parks.htm

You could also google images for some ideas.

Also, get back to us nearer the date as I'm sure there are things that are as yet unannounced

Work / Stockbroking in Poland [6]

the news reports that unemployment will hit 14%

Now is not a good time for those with a less than perfect CV.

Genealogy / Glonski - Polish builder in Canada of RAF aircraft [3]

He or she has signed internally one of the wings of our Hawker Hurricane aircraft, a typical thing for builders to do.

Have you been able to check company records ?

Was the person a civilian living in the local town ? Phone directories, electoral rolls, immgration records might help.

run the name through a genealogy search engine for a soundex, for variations of spelling. Ellis Island Records or JewishGen might bring up something. You won't find the person, but you might find the name.

Have you found a website for Thunder Bay and posted a message ?

Have you posted a message on the various WWII websites ?

Maybe the Imperial War Museum, London can offer you some tips.

Study / English on a Matura exam in Poland - Advice Needed [5]

I have been asked to help somebody prepare for the English part of their Matura.

There are two types of exam. The easy ... and the difficult. The Oral Exam is slightly different in each case.

For everything else I agree with pawian.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

More thoughts, based on a village I don't know.

A small percentage of the population will be townies with a second home.

You are not likely to see a police officer in the village, unless there is a problem.

Some people will deal with problems in their own way.

There might be medium to high unemployment.

The community will probably be involved in farming to some extent.

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

Why are you asking ?

Wikipedia states a population of 278. That's a small village and tells me that it might be the sort of place that has only one or two shops. And possibly no church.

I stand to be corrected, of course.

Genealogy / Trying to find an old Polish friend: George Trebinsky; his family home was in Glossop Derbyshire UK [3]

A couple of problems:

Is George the English version of his name or his birth name ?

Is it possible that he changed his surname when his mother remarried ?

Possible ways to find him:

check death records and obituaries. just in case
check phone directories. (from the 1950s to the present)
check Friends Reunited
check army (reunited/reunion) websites
Google the family name and see what comes up.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

Have you hard what every Polish masters student is taught when learning the accent?

To be honest, if I hear a bad accent I make a point of knocking it out of them.

The point of mid atlantic is to help the student fit in... wherever they go. A false BBC accent simply makes them sound like an idiot.

However, most of my teaching time is spent coaching younger folk for exams.

Have any of you guys noticed students who after some time start to copy your mannerisms and speech.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

You should use the accent you are born with,

I lost my accent many years ago and wouldn't make a penny, if I had kept it.

Teaching 'Mid Atlantic' is the way to go.

BBC English is a thing of the past. It no longer exists as it did in the past.

Love / New in Warsaw - can't find girlfriend. [12]

He said that in Poland women outnumber men by 3 to 1.

Wroclaw has more women than men. For every 100 men there are 113 women. So I've been told.

Love / What do you think....is he serious? [37]

This is too much info... We don't really want to know all of that!

It's always good to hear the facts, if we are to offer an opinion.

Feel free to tell us more, Melissa. Details matter. :)

Genealogy / Kolodjiojryki / Kohodjiojryki; what ethnicity and meaning [5]

this is the closest I can find:
"Tomasz Kołodziejczak (1967-) is a Polish science fiction and fantasy writer"
From wikipedia.

A name check at Ellis Island Records does not bring up a perfect match.

Wait for Polonius3 to post on this thread. He usually has the answer to this type of question.

We are looking for any information about the name, ethnicity or meaning of her name.

Is this her maiden name or married name ?
Have you checked her marriage / death records ?
Have you checked her naturalization records ? That is, if she went to the USA.
Have you checked your mother's papers ?
If this is your mums mum then you might find grans maiden name on your mums birth certificate.
