Canada targets UK Poles to fill labour shortage

coming over here and stealing our jobs". Now it seems they are coming over here and stealing our immigrants. The Canadian government is courting Polish migrants living in Britain, in an attempt to persuade them to abandon our rainy shores in favour of a new life in Canada.

Canada is facing a shortage of labour, particularly in construction and transport, and hopes that Polish migrants from Britain will be easier to integrate than people coming directly from Poland because they already speak English. Canada's Immigration minister called a meeting with representatives of the Polish community at the Canadian High Commission in London last month, to discuss ways that Poles living in the UK could be poached.

On an official visit to England and Ireland, Jason Kenney boasted to Polish migrants: "Many of you would find a better job in Canada." He added that Canada also had a better economy, better social mobility and a lower cost of living than the UK.

In a speech to Polish expats in Ireland, Mr Kenney said: "The government of Canada is committed to building an immigration system that actively recruits talent rather than passively processing all applications that we receive. There are approximately 200,000 Poles living in Ireland, many with highly advanced skills in the trades needed in Canada's labour market."

The Canadian Gov is only doing what industry does, fill the seats at the expense of your competitors.

We do have a shortage of labour ... and i have nothing against polish people coming here but ... with that shortage of labour we also have a massive amount of people collecting social welfare who are perfectly capable of working labour jobs so i imagine the shortage could be filled that way but then the canadian government would have to actually do something about the welfare issue in this country, i guess this i easier for them ... ugh.

better economy

probably true

better social mobility

How does one measure that? I really doubt it.

a lower cost of living than the UK

that is probably true, BUT it it way further then the UK.

hopes that Polish migrants from Britain will be easier to integrate than people coming directly from Poland because they already speak English

so Canada will save on schooling those immigrants. Smart.

We do have a shortage of labour ...

good point, yet the Canadian government wants immigrants to sustain the growth of population as well. Who is going to pay your retirement when you grow old, eh? Not the people on welfare. ;)

The UK is way more interesting then Canada:D.. Going to Canada would be like immigrating to the UK from 50- 100 years ago to a degree;)

... ugh.

Any other immigrant groups you want to poach ?

Nigerians?

Somalians?

Roma?

Think of the diversity!

In all seriousness, I hear that there is good poke to be made down the Canadian mines. One would have to work flat out for a year, but they could probably go home and buy a house in Poland after that.

And have a nice nest egg stashed away.

That chap Kenney seems like a bit of a snake. He came over here, Ireland, promising people the stars and the moon. A load of tradesmen sold up and relocated. Went over, found out the jobs they were promised were not what they were told beforehand, were let go and left stranded in the middle of nowhere. lol

Had to come home after paying a fortune in visa fees, accommodation, flights and what not. They were on the radio crying about it a few weeks ago.

Hey like i said i have nothing against polish people coming here, Clearly the Canadian government doesn't want to fill labour shortages with their own lazy citizens god forbid forcing people to work for money. There is money to be made here all over the country so come make it :) Mining is huge oil rigs are better a young man can make a fortune doing that...

not difficult to foresee.

that is my point. The Canadian Immigration still paints the country as if it was an easy buck, but it never has been and it never will. unfortunately one cannot see it from across the pond;D. The should update their poaching tactics;).

It is common to bring the the foreign doctors to Canada and leave them alone driving taxis, even though they were allowed in because of their education- so Canadians like their taxi drivers well educated I presume;). On the serious note, I think that many people have been cheated, because of the Canadian propaganda. Shame.

Sounds like Canada is following the UK model: force its workers to accept worsening conditions, reduced pay and increasing hours... but the lazy and useless get everything for free, and don't even have to get up at 6am like I have to!

The Canadian Immigration still paints the country as if it was an easy buck, but it never has been and it never will.

I've never believed the hype about Australia, either. Way too hot, increasingly expensive, and they don't have any water :D

you can make good money here but it isnt easy money mining and rig jobs bring huge pay checks but they also bring extensive labour and dangerous work conditions nothing easy there.

If you are a skilled labourer you can make good money. Particularly in the housing sector. The key is where to live. Toronto is a drag- it is too big and past the city of Toronto it is just one suburb after another.

Some smaller towns and cities may prove better for those who want to immigrate and not move into a Polish ghetto- like Toronto has.

haha... no we have enough of those here we don't need any, most of them aren't immigrants here though, most immigrants here are willing to work a million times harder than the average canadian.

Yeah, thats the Bull droppings they fed us here prior to 2004 and still we have tens of thousands of Poles up and down the country living off the considerably higher welfare they get paid here than back in Poland and supping Lech on the streets from 10 am....... I simply dont believe Canada has no immigrants milking its system.

they do. absolutely they do. but it has been my experience in the Polish community that they really want to do well in Canada. Canada for many Poles is like the promised land- so they try harder. And I am sure the distance has a lot to do with it. If you fail in the U.K. you can still get a cheap flight home or bus. The cost of getting to Canada is so much more expensive so those that go- try their hardest to do well.

I would say most of my husbands Polish friend that live in Canada are doing well for themselves. None of them are milking the system- except one but he has mental issues.

It doesn't make sense for Poles to come over, work or milk the system for a certain amount of time because they won't be able to save up the cost of the flight- like they can in U.K.

Of course this is a generalization and of course this is just my experience. but welfare income in Canada is below the poverty line- so you don't really get to do much but exist.
