Met a self-described highly-educated girl in a bar back in the pre-internet days who adamantly made the German language claim. She became infuriated that someone of my lowly state would feign the slightest bit of skepticism at her claim. The more natural reason I used, the more indignant her properly educated self became. I would have left it alone but she possessed some pleasing physical features, and I knew the more agitated she'd become, the better my chances of receiving an invitation for a sleep-over would be( I wasn't living a religion-informed moral existence back then).

Anyhow, this encounter led me to question the veracity of her claim; maybe she was right. So, I set off to research it at the main library of my fair city. And, my skepticism was validated. It's a myth.

I was reading something about hippos (an invasive species if ever there was one) almost being introduced into the southern states as a food source and to deal with another problem. The story said that there was majority support however the congressional vote was postponed indefinitely due to a major crisis and after that, the couple of politicians who were pushing for it most either died or got voted out.

A nice story and I wonder if it's true.

One only needs to think logically. Before the 19th century, emigration from the German states to the colonies and later to the United States was not significant. The cultural affiliation of the American elites was with Britain. The mass influx of German immigrants into the U.S. in the mid-19th century would not change the already established language and culture.

That's what I thought- maybe 0.5-1% of population was German extraction. But, about one-tenth of the American population was of German heritage in the late 18th century. Certainly not a dominant element of the early US population, but enough to be noticed.

There was debate about translating laws into German to publish alongside the official English translations, so German immigrants were in the minds of the early American government.

I read (actually only a couple, of weeks ago) that several years ago an algae bloom killed off the seagrass they eat so the state of Florida bought thousands of lettuces and dropped them into the sea from planes!

I remember hearing something of that sort, also. However, I think manatees are strictly fresh water animals.

Yes. I just had a look online and it said the Florida kind are freshwater, though some elsewhere are saltwater.
