Eurovision - Today I will be ashamed to be Polish

Eurovision is just too boring

Dreadful songs, a kitsch spectacle but lots of people like it.

LGBTQUERTY fest!

That's where almost all pop music and fashion come from. We own those cultural spheres, often literally.

Plus the target age group for the live audience is people in their 30s. The ones in that age group with kids tend not to want to spend 400 on one ticket plus hotel bills and all the extras.

Great Britain. Can you vote today?

Not just Great Britain but all of Britain since Northern Irish viewers vote with the U.K. as far as I know. I don't think we have many U.K.-based posters here now, just Milo and Lenka who don't seem bothered for it. Plus one other who has not I think disclosed their location.

I used to hate it and studiously avoid it however in a weird way all the Eurokitsch and barely supressed camp grows on you.

This year France has a very good chance apparently. The U.K. and Poland entries are ok but not expected to win and some of the others are said to be truly dreadful. I hope they are as bad as the newspapers suggest since that makes it more fun. One country (I think Greece in an oddly appropriate way) has entered a 16 year old boy, fnarr fnarr, and the Albanian entry is a whole family including the granny.

I'll pretend at work that I didn't watch it, being too posh and intellectual and all that but in reality I'll be cheering them on. Especially the Albanian granny.

*laughs*

It's like the thing everybody openly denies but secretly enjoys....

The 66th Eurovision Song Contest from Turin, Italy reached 161 million people over the 3 live shows in 34 measured markets. The reach of the Contest in those territories was up 7 million year on year.*

eurovision.tv/story/eurovision-2022-161-million-viewers

The Contest once again proved hugely popular with younger audiences. ...

And the outcome of a country's singer is a hot topic for the news next day, if won or again "zero points", but of course nobody has seen it because "too boring" and "kitsch", right? Right!

It's the same everywhere, heh:)

I used to enjoy the stupidity of Eurovision until about 10:years ago, when the music got so bad it became unwatchable and then it started to go camp.....that was it for me.

Liverpool will just be a gayfest with terrible music.

That's the whole point.

And 160 million people will tune in and enjoy it.

You may even like the Polish song this year.

the Polish song this year.

Blanka, the singer, should have worked more on her diction. There are parts in her performance which I can hardly understand.

The song isn`t bad but it seems to me that choreography is better than singing. I can be wrong.

Eurovision is a glorious celebration of Europe,

Exactly. Europe ahead of all as usual. Americanos can only dream of having such a celebration. :):):)

Quite.

For a song so bad that it felt it must be deliberate.

HEY!

:)

I wonder if Ukraine gets to host an Eurovision after there is peace, to make up for the one they had to give away now....and if Russians will then be invited again...

I wonder if Ukraine gets to host a Eurovision

Given that they've won several times in the last few years they'll probably win again before long.

Germany got POINTS!!! I don't believe it!!!!

I have just one word for German Eurovision (in general....): Read the room!

I remember when Greece was being demolish by austerity and the German Eurovision entry was some lady singing about her perfect life...

Now with Ukrainians faced with genocidal enemy which on record is calling for the deaths of millions of Ukrainians.... Germany goes with:

"We're so happy we could die..."

Almost as clueless as Switzerland whining about not wanting to be a soldier.... or Austria's red, white and black mass rally for a guy with a small moustache.... I want to think it was accidental or intentional irony but.... Austria.... you should give some thought to change.

small moustache .... Austria

The second most famous Austrian after Mozart.

A few years ago, Germany had a really nice song that referenced the great days of Berlin cabaret, Hollander, Dietrich, Weill, Gerron etc. Music I've long loved. Eurovision had stage sets back then and for some unfathomable reason they decided to make theirs pure 1930s, furniture, clothes etc. The 1930s had some lovely music, Germany has some lovely music, however if there's one decade that's associated with Germany in a very specific way......,.,,,

Actually it was Edgar Allen Poe... a weird topic for a Eurovision song... I also wonder how well Poe translates.... he's amazing in the original (for Americans at any rate I have no idea how other English speakers perceive him) but in other languages?

Poe

And apparently the lyrics were about Spotify royalties. Maybe they know why.

I thought Croatia's entry was fairly foul. Slovenia's was nice though not necessarily for musical reasons...

English speakers perceive

Liked though not as knowledgeable about him as Americans tend to be. We know the House of Usher and the Rue Morgue however things like the raven or the one with the heart under the floorboards we tend to know via cultural references to them elsewhere.

hungarians are more likely to do that.... she's more or less worshipped there

I am very sad that the Poljakinja didn't win so that I could watch the winning performance on mute.

Indeed, however when an actress dressed as her arrives by horse and carriage half way through those really syrupy concerts with huge orchestras that they have outdoors at Potsdam Palace (I forget the conductor who does them) then the kitsch and camp transcends any Norwegians in monster costumes, Polish milkmaids with their jugs hanging out or dancing Albanian grannies found at Eurovision.

hungarians

She did a lot for them.

A quite remarkable person in some ways. A shame she wasn't wearing a stab vest although apparently her famous corsets were laced so tight that they actually stopped her bleeding out for quite a while.

There's a lot of griping in the UK media today, complaining that they messed up the audio and the lighting for the UK entry. I couldn't hear it very well so maybe there was indeed a cock up with the technology.

Of course it could have been deliberate to avoid paying for it all next year. Ireland did that once. They'd won twice in a row and couldn't afford to stage it a third time so they entered a complete turkey in order to lose.
Bratwurst Boy 12 | 11,862

.....here is talking Germany should stop choosing its entry's for woke alternative rock....that never gains lotsa points, neither in the ESC nor in football! :)

But the real reason is probably our selection process....we are use to send nobody's. Often totally fresh constructed people without a history, without a story, without a career whatsoever....these people are forgotten the moment the ESC ends, why should anybody vote for them?
