Poor Hungary...sad to see them go--Germany was lucky to stay alive. Germany is flat, but they're like a mild rash that won't go away.

Even sadder that Poland exited...maybe more time under Sousa will yield better results in the future. I'm beginning to understand Polish pessimism more and more with each passing tournament.

We have seen three Germany's so far.....against France, against Portugal, against Hungary, it has always been like a totally different team.

I have no idea which team comes out to play in Wembley!

I truly don't!

Poland has all the same mental and physical qualities Germany has...with first class players (Lewandowski).....they even lend some to us (Klose, Podolski, heh:).....but they somehow never make it big....WHY????

Me neither, it will be interesting.

.but they somehow never make it big....WHY????

Interesting question. They did have some very good teams back in the seventies though and did well.

they somehow never make it big....WHY????

The pattern I noticed years ago that they might play very well up to the point where the other team scores.... and then they completely fall apart. Is that related to a culture of pessimism? I dunno, mebbe. It's a pattern I've noticed more in Poland than in the US: put in a pretty good effort and then quit the very first time anything goes wrong.

On the other hand I read somewhere that there's a pretty direct (not perfect but still pretty consistent) of hours of sunlight a year and quality of soccer teams (since it's best learned and perfected on outdoor fields) which is why smaller countries in the south of Europe often punch well above their weight and why Russia (for example) despite a distinguished sporting culture and a large population is consistently pretty mediocre. They usually qualify and maybe make past the group stage and then crash out.

culture of pessimism?

But.....why?

They didn't lose the last World War! ;)

of hours of sunlight a year and quality of soccer teams

...hmmm....I would guess western Poland should have the same kind of sun hours like eastern Germany at least....

But not the euros.... financial investments can make up some for the sunlight deficit (like Germany, Netherlands or teams from the UK)

We have seen three Germany's so far.....against France, against Portugal, against Hungary, it has always been like a totally different team.

You could even say within a single game we see three Germanys.

Poland has all the same mental and physical qualities Germany has...with first class players (Lewandowski).....but they somehow never make it big....WHY????

Hence, the pessimism. Quality, but still fall flat. It begins to feel like you're cursed. Few months back I read an interview with Sousa, and he made the point that his first order of business is to get the team to believe they can win. I liked some of things I've seen from this team, so I'm optimistic about 2022.

play very well up to the point where the other team scores.... then they completely fall apart. Is that related to a culture of pessimism?

But, they didn't fall apart yesterday when things went bad, they kept their composure and fought hard until the end.

there is a Polish saying: kpisz czy o drogę pytasz?

Is that translated as: The war we lost twice?

But not the euros.... financial investments can make up some for the sunlight deficit (like Germany, Netherlands or teams from the UK)

But does financial investments give national teams that much better an edge? It certainly does with the clubs--you can buy talent from all over the world. But, not so with national teams.

I think so yes!

More money can buy better players, that brings clubs high into the national and international competitions = so also the homegrown players can gain invaluable experiences at the highest levels, play with and against all the famous hot shots and bring all that knowledge back to the national team!

Lewandowski for example has won it all on the club level with Bayern München...

euro

Whoever wins the match between England & Germany at Wembley has a pretty much clear path all the way to the final!

@BB

So, it's more about the national teams that have more players who play in the best leagues?

@Crno & BB

I also wouldn't discount the Dutch.

It's only logical, isn't it?

A talent is forged in the fire, against the very best.....

....just in....in the worst case there will be barely any german fans in Wembley! All guests need to be in quarantine first (till up to 10 days!!!) + a negative QCR test...

And the travel back won't be any easier...till up to 14 days quarantine before they can enter Germany again (even with negative QCR test, also for already vaccinated people)

Crazy! 😒

Completely logical!!! Also means it's not a matter of the financial resources a national team has at its disposal, because players develop at the club level not the national team level, correct?

Crazy! 😒

Very!

Absolutely!

The clubs make the player, the calling into the national team is after all only the cherry at the top. A player wouldn't be chosen without having made a name for himself already, and where does he do that? In his club of course.

Of course, if the national team has some money it can invest in the whole training environment, in specialists, clothing, busses, hotels and all that, it won't hurt! :)

So, you're predicting your countrymen to make it, at least, to the semis?

Maybe you should go out, but I'm thinking it's you Deutschers and the Dutch in the semis. You Deutschlanders have a football horseshoe stuck up your a$$es. :D

We lost that "horseshoe" in 2018.....and this time it's not exactly a "dreamteam" either.

At least it's the last game for Löw, after him we have a real chance for a new beginning!

Na ja....lets wait and see :)

Nah, you simply misplaced it. :)

Have they already named Löw's replacement?
Bratwurst Boy  8 | 11927
24 Jun 2021   #262
Yup...Hansi Flick! He is already poised and ready to take over! :)

(He was there 2014 in Brazil as Löw's assistant....and later chef coach by Bayern Munich)

How much do they pay to watch a bunch of multimillionaires running after a round ball? With all that money, can't they get one each and be happy?

Sounds like the type of pedigree and results to make German fans content...for now.

I would too, but the Dutch occupy the same path--that makes the path less clear, IMO.
