Grzegorz Braun extinguishes Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament

The notorious Konfederacja MP, Grzegorz Braun, used a fire extinguisher today to put down Hanukkah candles in Polish Parliament...

... the incident caused understandable uproar, especially after Braun said: "there can be no place for acts of tribal, wild, talmudic cult on the premises of Sejm", he also added that he was "restoring normality to Sejm by stopping the acts of satanic, racist triumphalism", and he called other members of parliament to a theological debate.

In what other parliament than Polish could this be possible? No wonder Sejm's YT channel is watched by millions of people (yesterday's transmission had 4.1 million views). :)

What a cretin.

Plenty of bad publicity for Poland too.

In what other country, has the highest ranking police officer in the land fired a grenade launcher in his office?

You know what they say - "where logic ends, Poland starts"...

... but there's a method in this madness, young Horatio, and all that. ;)

He also managed to spray a woman in the face with the fire extinguisher and could be (should be) facing charges....

Maybe her face was similar to a hanukkah candle. Easily confused.

Sadly Poland gives them (and unbelievably prosecutors and judges too!) immunity.

Hopefully that immunity will be removed.

@Torq

Ok I will say it!

Why should there be Hanukkah candles in the Sejm?

At risk of sounding like Grunnie, is not Poland the Maiden of Christ?

Why should there be Hanukkah candles in the Sejm?

Well, Jewish culture and religion is a part of the Holiest Rzeczpospolita tradition and the Third Rzeczpospolita considers herself a rightful heir of this highest culmination of human civilisation.

is not Poland the Maiden of Christ?

She is indeed. She is also, simultaneously, the Christ of Nations, which to an untrained mind might introduce some difficulties of theological nature.

Perhaps the Nazi should change his name to Eva Braun...
Novichok  5 | 8099

What he did to the candles was free speech. Or art.

Hopefully that immunity will be removed.

And then what?

She is also, simultaneously, the Christ of Nations

What makes Poland superior to the remaining 200 countries in the opinion of the remaining 200 countries?

What he did to the candles was free speech.

Also, he acted as the defender of the principle of separation of church and state.

separation of church and state

Poland doesn't bother with that particularly.

And anyway, celebrating the different communities that make up Polish life doesn't compromise that.

celebrating the different communities

Poland has only one community: Polish citizens. The rest are foreigners who have no business being represented in Sejm in any way.

@Novichok

I'm trying to imagine what would happen if someone brought a Menorah to the State Duma.

I think, probably, nothing would happen?

Putin invests a lot of effort in appearing with imams, rabbis, lamas and bishops.

But this is Poland - the most hardcore Christian country on Earth. That's why I ask.

Poland has only one community: Polish citizens.

Some of whom are of Moses confession.

Braun is a twat and he has just proven it again.

Christian country

Which is of course why the religious holidays of most minority religions are respected.

You won't hear me say a bad thing about Christianity, as it lives in the World.

I'm an atheist, but I still find the message of kindness profoundly powerful.

So let me understand something. This fellow Braun extinguished the Hanukkah candles with a
fire extinguisher because he felt such a ceremony had no place in the Sejm??

If so, he really is a cretin and should be hauled up on charges of anti-semitism!
jon357  73 | 23215

No. He did it because he hates Jews.

Listen to his deranged comments about 'Satanic' and 'Talmud'.

I still find the message of kindness profoundly powerful.

The lessons in the Sermon On The Mount are worth following.

He did it because he hates Jews.

So fvcking what? He has a right to hate anybody he wants.
Hating - Jews included - is legal everywhere. Destroying property is not. Extinguishing candles is not destruction.

Nobody cares what you think.

The world's media (and much of Poland) is talking about Grzegorz (Eva) Braun, not you.

And I gather the decision has already been taken to remove his immunity with a view to a criminal prosecution.

???

What exactly did he mean with that?

He sprayed a bystander trying to stop him in the face.... assault. On tape.

It was possibly a planned provocation to delay procedings so that Tusk won't go to Brussels tomorrow as official PM....

The way PiS had their talking points all prepared 'koalicja chaosu' 'you let it happen because he'd been mean to Witek' point to prior knowledge....

Couldn't he just blow out the candle? Did he have to put it out with a fire extinguisher?

What exactly did he mean with that?

Beats me.

He sprayed a bystander trying to stop him in the face...

She wasn't just a bystander but a Jewish doctor, Magdalena Gudzińska-Adamczyk, who tried to stop Braun from desecrating a relgious symbol that is important to her...

onet.pl/informacje/onetwiadomosci/grzegorz-braun-zaatakowal-ja-gasnica-prysnal-mi-w-twarz/2txd99s,79cfc278

... it is so absurd that one is tempted to make a joke or two about it, but at the end of the day it was a lamentable incident and Braun should be punished for his idiocy.

That was self-defense. It's the bystander who committed an assault by stopping him.
In civilized countries, one does not have a right not to be offended. Offensive speech is exactly why the US has the First Amendment.

That's why Europe is no better than the USSR.

*goes checking*

Hmm... a very decent, patriotic family it seems:

...son of Kazimierz Braun, a respected film director...

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kazimierz_Braun_(re%C5%BCyser)

... grandson of Julisz Braun, a lawyer...

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juliusz_Braun_(prawnik)

... great-grandson of Karol Braun, the president of "Sokół" gymnastic association in Dąbrowa Tarnowska...

geni.com/people/Karol-Braun/6000000024321473949

... great-great-grandson of Józef Braun from Tarnów.

Couldn't be arsed digging deeper. The guy is as Polish as it gets at least 4 generations back. You can breathe a sigh of relief, BB. ;)
