English is spoken by a mere percentage

A mere 400 million as the first language and perhaps by a mere 2bn as a second or other language.

I agree with the 400 million but the two billion people that know English as tehir second language? come on! On what planet do you live on??

Finally I believe that English is only thought as an international language just because of the fact that the British "colonised" so much land in the times of their Empire. Personally I believe that there should be made a new language that could serve for communication purposes on the global scale. With what we have now, I say it is just utterly unfair for the rest of the population. Millions of people worldwide had to learn a new language to achieve something in their lives. How come an English kid only has to know one language where I have to know the second one.

I am also very angry on all of the Westerners coming to other countries and expecting the locals to speak their language. Obviously there's nothing wrong with tourism! It gives lots of money to the local economies however I believe that the foreigners coming to a new country should at least make a slight effort in learning a new language instead depending on the language skills of the natives.

There once was a great idea to make a new language it was called Esperanto, it is great pity they have abandoned this project :(

Yes, it failed miserably. Only Kryten from the Red Dwarf series ever became fluent......

English is fastly becoming recognised as the Lingua-Franca of the world. That's a fact! However, I'm not saying that it should be the world language or has some special right to be. Although English is only the third most commonly spoke first langue in the world, (behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish), it does seem to be the second language of choice for many people. Just for example; how many South-Americans and Chinese are learning English as a second language? A lot! Now compare that figure with the number of people from the countries where English is the mother tongue are learning either Spanish or Mandarin. Certainly Spanish is popular, but falls well short of English. It's demand driven. Just some food for thought....

There are numerous examples where English is becoming a de-facto international language, such as English is the mandated language of international aviation.
Most of the key words in programming languages are in English, even foreigners inventing a new languages write it in English.

Americans. USA.

As a USA resident. Before I explain I'm Polish, it's annoying to be stereotyped by Europeans as ignorant, simple minded and dumb but it's justified.

Haha the English aren't arrogant. We're just racist in our own country. We're the kindest people on Earth apparently. Americans though, arrogant and annoyingly loud! And Poles....all the nicest people I have ever met are Polish. My girlfriend is Polish, she's an amazing person, her friends are Polish and they're all great people that are friendly, tolerant and appreciate the fact I try to learn Polish to make communication easier :D

English is used as a lingua franca in many multi-language countries, so people from one part of a country can speak to people from another part of their country, in India for example, and Africa, it is the widely used International language in the World, for example, so when I was kibbutz in Israel when I was young, my Swedish friend spoke to his Portuguese girl-friend in English, they communicated in English.

I'm Polish living in Dublin since 2011. I'm afraid that 4 Eigner is right in about 9 out of 10 points of that discussion. Polish people are indeed ignorant! Wouldn't generalize to much but we are talking about average. A Few things have to be rectified:

1) We are not well developed country - our economical growth is symbolic, coused mainly by the fact that most of Poles are working way beyond 40h per week and basically they do plenty of extra work after hours (whether it is productive work or not is the different story).

2) Poland is MESSY country - Yes it is. In 80% of area it is! But I have to say that this is getting better as people travel around the europe can see what other countries look like. It is just education.

3) We are very well educated - Another generalisation. In my opinion we are just educated and thats all - Education doesn't mean that you are well prepared to pursue a profession. However we are not badly educated people.

4)We are travelling a lot - Well, we are willing to travel if we can afford. I've been to 90% of european countries thanks to the fact that I'm working in a good company in a good branch and good country.

5)We don't like when other people laught at us. Yes yes yes - truth! The sooner we realize its true the better for us. Poles don't undarstand that when people laught at us it doesn't necessariy mean they want to insult us. Its kind of persecution complex i'd say.

6)We are the proud country - yes we are and thats not a bad thing. However we should be more humble in some cases.

As for the Americans - I know only one guy who im woking with - He's a very good engineer as well as very nice guy. I'm very happy i can work with him. I can say only good things about him. I can say anything else about Americans, I bielieve that as in any country some of them are fine and others not.

Thanks,
Lukasz

The eurostat has some statistcs on the subject of european education and I must say that Poles have
the lowest percentage of those who are not able to finish even school. Please visit the eurostat website .
And I think statistics is cannot be biased .

Are Polish people the most ignorant people in the world?I've visited poland quite a few times and on the whole they are friendly and helpfull, except if you are trying to buy a train ticket in English ha ha,I have since learned enough Polish to struggle by with,it makes a big difference as it gives poles a laugh at me attempting the language (all in good humour) I'm from Scotland and we have our fair share of ignorant people as does England , I'm pretty sure if you get a bad reaction from someone it is more than likely the way that you approach them.

Poles whom I've met over the years tend to have quite a high level of university education, I should say. "Ignorant"?
Scarcely!

Having graduated from university does not automatically make one smart, regardless of where they are from.

To the OP. to State, that Polish people are the most ignorant people in the world, only shows how little experience of the world you have.

There is no reason for making these wild claims, like about Polish women for example; I have seen thousands of Polish women and they are not remarkable in beauty at all. My well travelled opinion reflects that of what is on almost 100% of the Internet about that subject. I have heard Poles make claims that they have the best food in the world, the best water, the best this and that, etc

Having lived in Poland for the past 10 years, even if you dont like it, I see exactly the same as the OP. Polish women are so arrogant about being the most beautiful in the world that even the dog ugly ones will sit there and swear blind that they are some kind of cinderella. Any expat who lives here and hasnt heard this is either lying or in denial. The same with the food, anyone would swear that Polish food is world clsss, when in fact most foriegners who come here avoid it like the plague, as could be seen during the Euro championships when most of the Irish spent their time in Mcdonalds instead of tasting the local fayre, flaki anyone??? The water bit is wrong thoug, POles are so disgusted by their own water, alot even boil mineral water in kettles. i get strange looks here when I drink from a tap.

Perhaps this thread could be renamed 'the ignorant stereotypes thread' and placed in the off-topic lounge for anyone who wishes to vent. Any statement to the effect that all Poles (or any other nationality) are 'X' are facile. There is good and bad in every nationality, and we are all individuals.

You are clearly unhappy in Poland why don't go back to Welsh and roam free with sheep?

The thread, I believe, consists in establishing that Polish people are the most "ignorant", i.e. LEAST educated, and not the stupidest:-) You're quite right, of course. Having attended and even graduated university hardly means one has more smarts than someone who hasn't!

Look what i have found :

telegraph.co.uk/women/sex/6542263/British-people-among-worlds-ugl iest-according-to-BeautifulPeople.com.html

But do not take this seriously, it seems to be a scandinavian site and of course people at
BeautifulPeople.com. are biased .
I personally find the British good - looking and many British women are beautiful.

beautiful women in norway..what city? - Topix
topix.com/.../norway/TG8A8DLKOC62L...‎
Norwegian women are objectively speaking among the most beautiful women in the world. The problem is however that they are fully aware of ...

Objectively speaking ?

I'm surprised why some men get so irritated with the supposed beauty of polish women
So now it is possible to start a fuss about Norwegian women , so go ahead ! We are all listening

hey, back to topic guys, keep up good work.

A TLK Krakow - Warsaw train was stopped last Friday when a woman became worried after seeing a Muslim praying.

According to TVN, the 59-year-old got off the train at the next station and phoned her husband after witnessing the Moroccan student behaving "suspiciously". Her husband in turn contact the police.

"She misinterpreted the situation. He did not behave dangerously," says police spokeswoman Barbara Stepien.
