Dico-polo is an authentic expression of people's music preferences in the country
I remember when it was first popular, let' say mid 1990s and the weird thing was that (otherwise) smarter people just tried to pretend it didn't exist. I read one article about it which pointed out that anything that popular in a western country would have grad students writing articles about it trying to figure it out, but in Poland.... zip.
There was even a big kerfuffle when TVP put a disco polo-ish song on its promotional list.
It was also (weirdly) the first time I heard of Poles liking things ironically. I knew a couple of doctoral students who watched the disco polo shows on Polsat to make fun of them. I did a time or two as well.
It's not my thing though I've heard a few songs I didn't hate, I do get that it connects to a lot of people and don't look down on it for that.
Nothing however beats baroque music for me.
When it comes to classical, I'm 19th century romantics all the way...
