Any thoughts on Poland's 2021 Eurovision entry?

I posted the Eurovision entry and my thoughts back in post #711, but here you go:

I am sure this next song will soon become popular, although it's not really my taste. I'm actually quite impressed with it because the majority of Eurovision songs are absolute sh!te, but I do feel that Poland has done quite well with this! Here is Rafał ( Brzozowski ) with the Eurovision 20121 entry, The Ride:

I really don't see or hear it making it into the finals.

This is where we have opposing views. I think it will do well. I have to admit that I'm not really a fan of Eurovision at all and haven't heard any of the other entries, but they are usually so dire, that I feel this one has a good chance. I remember Delph always raved about Eurovison, songs so gloriously bad that it was compulsory viewing for him. I think you might fall into that category too maf. I won't be watching it but I'll be interested to see how Poland does.......

Oh yeah.... mafketis loves him some eurovision (the more ethnic and misguided and downright insane... the better)

The Polish entry doesn't stand out in any way... but then every year some completely bland nothing song makes it into the top 5 or higher (and occasionally wins....)

How did I guess!

That would be Switzerland then. Purely to see what Poland might be up against, I listened to your choices. Switzerland was just boring, but Iceland wasn't bad to be honest, although a little dated. The UK entry is something and nothing really. I didn't listen to any countries for fear that I might actually be interested enough to watch the contest itself, and I can't have that!

There is ,I really like that style of Rock.

I Loved both of your posts but I guarantee that Joker will prefer your Nalepa post.

I am not a great fan of Behemoth but I love the fact that one of the most outragious Rock bands in the world is Polish....we have had outragious American, British and German bands but I am glad that Poland has joined that club.

Behemoth

Too heavy for me, but he's an interesting (and decent) person.

Have you heard any Current 93? A very different style to Behemoth but similar themes and therefore an overlapping fan base.

I thought they were a British band.

They are (as far as I know). Some similarities with Behemoth though in terms of the things they sing about.

Fisz Emade

This is good.

Never heard of them though they sound quite good. Not unlike some of the neo-folk music coming out of Germany only without the drums and the fire-eating.

Do you know Zakopower?

Just thought I would put this out there....

I just happened to discover Ralph Kamiński (cousin of Michal Szpak?!)

Great stuff, my new favorite Polish musician.

Very 70s influenced pop-rock (with a very mid 70s look) and a vocal delivery rooted in emotion rather than display and at times a bit weird (he's got a falsetto and he's not afraid to use it).

Kosmiczne energie

youtube.com/watch?v=nV8FGJNQqyM

Autobusy (great video with homages to Abba and similar to parts of the Maneskin video for zitti e buoni (which came 8 months later)

youtube.com/watch?v=ARZAUVpvxw8

Great stuff!

Why haven't more people posted about him before?

Never knew about them. Yeah not bad....

Here, don't know much about them but it got a vibe, or maybe it is just me missing pre-covid world lol
By the way is it me or some of them have this strange accent or maybe it is about way they pronounce things not all of them thought - weird...

OK

@Ironside

Your post was OK.
At least it was not as gay as Maf's posts.

far too gay....

It's not gayness as such, it's a 70's thing (a type of androgyny that was an inherent part of pop-rock of the period) that gets reclassified as gay now but didn't seem like that at the time...

And he has a grasp on how to combine emotion and melody which I like but is often lacking in Polish music.

That said, yeah, he's probably gay (might explain lack of exposure) but I'm big into 70s styles now.

Here - music I'm into. There has been some misunderstanding in the past as to my taste in music. To clear the air I let you have inside as to my personal preferences.

Of course, I might and I do like some other kinds of music. Nothing however beats baroque music for me.

When it comes to Polish music I have my preferences as well. I like music that is original, authentic, and really good.
There is a lot of music in Poland that is not authentic at its core is just an imitation. Why would like to listen to imitation even if its quality is good?

Sometimes talent and a place they come from trump form and an authentic expression of talent, passion, originality, and so forth come to the fore.

So there is no mystery in the fact that I would choose dico=polo or it's like over some well-made imitation of American pop music.

Dico-polo is an authentic expression of people's music preferences in the country and there is no need to scoff or turn your nose on it. Such attitude is cheap and people like that are just snobs or wannabes.

I like Ralph because that dude has talent. He is good (talented) and authentic (original) in his merge of styles that belong to a different era with his 2021 text. Seamless joint, individual authentic expression, and talent make it a piece of good music.

Aha, I didn't tell you about my melomaniac preferences as it is my personal life which I don't like to share with the unknown public but on the other hand, is not that much. So you have it. lol!

Dico-polo is an authentic expression of people's music preferences in the country

I remember when it was first popular, let' say mid 1990s and the weird thing was that (otherwise) smarter people just tried to pretend it didn't exist. I read one article about it which pointed out that anything that popular in a western country would have grad students writing articles about it trying to figure it out, but in Poland.... zip.

There was even a big kerfuffle when TVP put a disco polo-ish song on its promotional list.

It was also (weirdly) the first time I heard of Poles liking things ironically. I knew a couple of doctoral students who watched the disco polo shows on Polsat to make fun of them. I did a time or two as well.

It's not my thing though I've heard a few songs I didn't hate, I do get that it connects to a lot of people and don't look down on it for that.

Nothing however beats baroque music for me.

When it comes to classical, I'm 19th century romantics all the way...
