Ive noticed there are many Polish heavy metal bands, its not really my favorite but some of its good in small doses.

They have awesome Blues /Rock bands..

A few articles in the Polish press this week, mourning the death of Polish music. Basically (according to the writers) not much quality popular music happening in PL right now.

There's still of course discopolo thriving in the provinces.

In other words.... PL is no different from anywhere else. Popular music died in the early 90s and most of what's been produced since is just death warmed over and stuck in the microwave and reheated again.

The last really original popular music I heard (that didn't remind me of 8 billion other things I'd heard) was maybe My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult* back in the 1980s, since then it's been the same few formats recycled into and out of each other.

There are still occasionally okay songs and a number of very talented musicians but no coherent body of evolving popular music is being made in any western or western adjacent country.

People say this, however there's a lot of discussion about whether technology has stifled creativity or not.

Sooner or later something will emerge, though almost certainly not in PL.

there's a lot of discussion about whether technology has stifled creativity or not.

There's a lot of reasons and technology is maybe part of it. A lot of the history of music is about new instruments creating new possibilities (like pianos with volume modulation - a feature not possible for harpsichords or electric vs acoustic guitars).

Existing instrumentation has mostly been played out and electronics have mostly been used to mimic them instead of really becoming their own thing.

There's also the stifling of creativity that comes with multi-culturalism, much musical innovation comes from rebelling against the older generation but when generational rebellion can be recast as lack of racial-ethnic loyalty then it's harder to rebel and be creative.

And the nonsense about cultural 'appropriation' which discourages experimentation.

A lot of this is about how music is promoted and sold. Simon Napier-Bell has written very well about it, about the changes and cycles in popular music over the past few decades.

Existing instrumentation has mostly been played out and electronics have mostly been used to mimic them

This is true.

stifling of creativity that comes with multi-culturalism

This isn't.

In Poland however, very little original has happened with popular music for a long time now.

This isn't.

It's not the whole story, but it's a contributing factor.

It's not the whole story,

Or any story.

Popular music as we know it emerged in the US in part as a combination of traditional Jewish melodies, African American rhythmic composition and Irish/Scots folk songs..

Poland never had that; hence many PRL-era popular songs sounding as if they were written by a committee of old, white academic musicologists.

Popular music as we know it emerged in the US in part as a combination

There is more than one popular music from the US and they all have different origins (though they intertwined at times).

What I mean is that after 1990 or so it became harder for young black musicians (for example) to rebel against their elders (one of the leading causes of evolution in African American music) because in so doing they risked looking disloyal to the black community. So there's been no noteworthy innovation in African American music in the last 30 odd years (after a century of explosive creativity and innovation).

And concerns about appropriation make it harder for young musicians to experiment. A whole generation of young British musicians longed to sound like Delta Bluesmen... they failed but managed to create a lot of great music along the way. There's no way for young white musicians to experiment with music from other cultures now (because they'll be attacked for "appropriation").

There are certainly enough who do it, and with commercial and critical success.

You are a hard man to please.
My "Girly" posts were too feminine for you and my "Metal" posts were too masculine.
I think I got your tastes though.
Electic Blues, Blues Rock, Hard Rock and Metal but not too extreme.....am I right?
Do you like Country or Country Rock?
Answer me and I will do my best to find Polish songs you like.....

Popular music died in the early 90s

I can see why you say that.
But it only died to a degree.
Popular Music is still out there if you look hard enough.
It is harder to create new music though.

These posts are for you all, but especially Joker.
I actually don't think that Polish Blues is that strong.
Not bad, but Polish bands are better at Prog Rock, Metal, Hard Rock and Goth.
But I like this.
Zdrowa Woda "Nie bojsie milosci"

youtu.be/bAeANbrrXdM

This is nice.
Harlem with "Czerwone Wino" .... "Red Wine".

youtu.be/o8RLuzpKIU0

This is Blue Machine and a song called "Widze"

youtu.be/eCxB1q4fLfM

This is the type of stuff that I think Polish bands excel in.
Prog Metal with a bit of Goth thrown in!

youtu.be/sdFpsc11B-g

My last one tonight.
Vena Valley and "Odchodzisz".

Just one post tonight.
I am not a fan of talent shows and this is quite old, so many of you have probably seen this before.

But it came up on my youtube stream today and I had never seen it before.
Young Polish guitarist on American Talent show.

I like most of the songs you have picked, except the chick tunes and that medieval sounding minstrel songs.

Hard Rock and Metal but not too extreme.....am I right?

If bands like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Guns n Roses and Iron Maiden are considered Hard Rock , then yes. Ive tried to listening bands that I call "Speed Metal" like Slayer, Anthrax and its just too repetitious and gets boring quickly.

I actually don't think that Polish Blues is that strong.

There are several good Polish Blues bands that you and others have posted on this thread. However, they didn't do such a fantastic job like the Brits trying to imitate our American music:)

These posts are for you all, but especially Joker.

After listening to the 4 songs...... I will choose the last one Vena Valley and "Odchodzisz". The Blues bands are ok, but nothing spectacular. I just purchased tickets to go see Joe Bonamassa for the 3rd time in March 2020.

He's coming to England afterwards and you shouldn't miss this show!! Its worth every penny or pence.lol

There are some good Polish bands, but Brits and Americans have dominated Rock and Blues music for decades.
And it is not just about language, it is about a feel for the music.
We Brits and Americans share far more than just history.
We share a deep understanding that even goes beyond music, but music is a good starting point.
I hate all these Brit v American posts.
We may have different outlooks, but deep down, we are the same people.....

Wow!!
Two songs that really took me out of my "comfort zone"..... both Metal on the surface, the first one hinted at Dance influence and the second at Indie and Prog, but both are new bands to me.

And both Polish!
Well done mate.
