USA, Canada / What do Polish people think of the USA [287]

that is true. now the government in the US i think are trying to control everything. next year all broadcast radio and TV will turn to digital. so people have to buy all this new stuff that cost hundreds of $. so now they can control what u watch and listen to through the satellite system.

Yes. They're also implanting chips into everyone's necks so that they can track our every move. In a few months they will start replacing our normal bones with robotics so we'll become an elite un-stopable forcec of super human and take over the world. Muahahaha muahahahaaaa ;)

Love / The age of consent in Poland is only 15 [147]

I don't get why it's 18 in one state and 16 in the other.

Because in the US each state has its own set of laws. it's been like this for a while now.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Czech Budweiser - that's a beer-lover's beer and hardly anything Poland makes stands up to it.

IMO Zywiec tastes better than CZ Budweiser :) I do like the dark Budweiser though. For Cz beer I perfer Radegast.

Food / Bigos Recipe [151]

1 lb cabbage
1 lg jar sauerkraut ( i use 3/4 of it)
I like a meaty bigos so I use
1/2 lb Lamb shank
1/2 lb veal
2 Pork chops ( can use w/ or wo bone)
1/2 lb Kielbasa
1/4 - 1/2 lb bacon (diced)
1 lg onion
4 peppercorns
1-2 bayleaf
2 small cans tomato sauce
1/2 cup dried mushrooms
1/2 1 cup Merlot (add to taste)
1/4 cup water

Boil cabbage with dried mushrooms for 40 min or until soft.

In seperate pot, brown bacon and simmer with sauerkraut and water . Cut onion, brown and add to sauerkraut.

Remove skin from kielbasa and brown. Brown the rest of the meat (remove fat/bone). Once browned, cut in to small pieces and add to sauerkraut, cover and simmer for 30 min.

Add cabbage and shrooms to sauerkraut meat mixture. Mix well and then add bayleaf, peppercorns, tomato sauce and wine. Cook for another 40 min. Add salt, pepper and additional wine for flavor.

Smacznego!

Food / Bigos Recipe [151]

do you people actually cook or just sit here talking about it?

Yes.

am still on the fence on whether I want to add tomato...

You don't have to. Some make white bigos with no tomato. Mine? I use tomato sauce. 2 small cans and I also add a little red wine

Prunes if you like, but don't have to. Mushrooms a must! For me anyway. I use Borowik szlachetny...very good dried mushrooms.

still waiting for you to tell us then `:)

Maybe :)

There was just enough for a small snowman :)

Travel / Is there a good ski resort in Poland? [13]

Janske Lasne Not too big, but it's good fun. You can also try Herlikovice. They have good tree runs, but also pretty small (for me anyway).

USA, Canada / Where can i find Spirytus Rektyfikowany in the USA? [77]

I pass it around parties and you can figure out who drank

No normal person in Poland will drink this stuff straight up. It's made for diluting and creating Nalewka (Liquor from fruit etc.)or Miodowka. The only people you will see drinking this are the drunkards.

You can probably find it in most loquor stores near a PL neighborhood.

What region would i have the most success in finding these?

In Szczecin. It's great on tap and difficult to find outside of there.

I will be in Szczecin in a couple of weeks I will try it again and I will report back

Yes, please do. I remember that I drank tons of this in a beer garden that runs down the middle of the street...I forgot the name of it.

Come live in Poland mate

Wish I could :)

I've been there plenty, but never lived. I'm sure you deal with swindlers-liars-movers-shakers.......

kombinowac ;) the way of life

I don't think you can call the entire country liars though. That would be offending everyone that I know living there and would be wrong.

Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

Polish people don't lie more than other nationalities, just in a different way

True... I deal with liars every day in the US.

You just have to be more selective with who you do business with.

Love / DO POLISH MEN DATE OLDER WOMEN? [169]

why does it matter to any of you all the age differences

There needs to be some sort of limit. Would you allow your 14 yr old daughter to date a 30 yr old man? Didn't think so.

Travel / Starbucks in Poland? [149]

Has anyone ever tried Kopi Luwak coffee?

They don't serve in Starbucks, but it's interesting stuff.

Starbucks is coffee for the rich , but they do have some tasty whole beans to but. All of those designer drinks are a waste of money IMO

Life / Wszystkich Świętych (All Saints Day) // Dzien Zaduszny (All Souls day) [86]

All Saints' Day is a festival which has been celebrated in Poland and the rest of the Catholic world for many centuries. All Saints Day is a national holiday, and a day when people all over Poland visit the graves of loved ones and to place candles and flowers on graves. The special candles, which can burn for many hours, are placed there so that departed souls can find their way through the darkness. Cemeteries are lit by many hundreds of these candles and at night the cemeteries can often be seen glowing from long distances. Many Poles travel long distances to visit family graves and to remember the dead. The holiday is also sometimes known as the Day of the Dead.

The 2nd of November called the Day of All Souls (Zaduszki) is the special occasions to pray for our family members and for these that died but are still in purgatory waiting their time to be able to enter heaven. The masses are held in the churches just like the day before. Additionally, the names of the descendants are read by priests during the services and all pray together for these souls. This day is usually gloomier and more hazy and rainy than the November 1st in Poland.
