In response to Lesser's posting, it would appear to be true that 'Jewishness' is about ethnic origin but I don't agree with the Nazi point. Many Nazi officers were merely carrying out orders, cogs in the wheel if u will, under heavy pressure from Hitler. Sure, not all had a gun directly pointed at their head, but many had limited discretion. It was an absolute philosophy that had to be executed with precision, often kill or be killed. For more info on this, read the Eichmann case which was part of my International Criminal Law module, very interesting. Also, read the Nuremberg trials with the testimonies of the likes of Hess who could tell at least some of the truth without the threat of Hitler murdering him

Travel / How much is a cab: Warsaw airport to the bus station? [27]

Back in 2005, one tried to charge me 60zł which I knew to be OTT. Speaking Polish makes you appear more credible so I got it right down to 35zł. A little steep maybe but you pay for convenience

Life / Poles - the Nation of Liars? [478]

Many people lie to get ahead, more important is whether the lies are white or black. I've encountered remarkable honesty here

Life / The Polish Wedding - What is it Like in Poland? [338]

Yeah, it's long. I went to one in Chorżów in Aug and it lasted for 12 hours whereas my brother's in Scotland (Oct) lasted for only 6. The ceremony was much quicker in Scotland. Still, there was vodka and food aplenty and a great atmosphere. The band played well and you can hear some classic Slavic songs. It can also be a cultural event as some Ukrainians were there and sang some of their own national songs. A good time was had by all

U r kurwa welcome, kurwa, hehehe. Just kidding. I leave Polish swearing to the Poles in the main although the occasional kurwa is therapeutic. Quite frankly, I don't feel the strength of their cuss words so better err on the side of caution and not use them too often

Life / The Polish Wedding - What is it Like in Poland? [338]

In Scotland, consummation of marriage is much more of a flexible process. Provided the relevant witnesses and competent people are in attendance then, in the absence of procedural defects, the marriage goes ahead. We are keen to identify what constitutes a sham marriage and throw it out but this doesn't happen often. In today's current global climate, there has to be increasing understanding of practices and cultural sensitivities. U should have countered him/her by saying that God is all around us, in our souls even, and tested his reaction, well ,ok, u said everywhere but u should've laboured the point. Nose snubbing is an instinctive and often defensive reaction to comments. Why did u not opt 4 an indoor ceremony, any legitimate objections? Just curious fella

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [123]

I respect Polish people and am grateful that I received gainful employment in this country. What I would say is that, not in criticism, Polish employers need to keep working on the relationship between graduates and the workplace. Way back in 1998, I did a placement that helped me to get work experience and develop different skills. The course I did for 4 years has been changed a little and now has the added option of taking up a place in an exchange course such as Socrates or Erasmus. I did a postgraduate course to enhance my knowledge base and job prospects but that isn't always enough. I've grown to learn that education is fundamentally different from training and that a growing awareness of the job market is critical. Poles, almost unquestionably, receive a formidable education but that doesn't always translate into a meaningful job position. Like us in Scotland, many graduated at the wrong time and too many people were searching for too few jobs. Hence the influx of Poles to the UK. It's not an inferiority complex in its fullest form, it's necessity. Let's not forget that 'necessity is the mother of invention'

Hehehe, genius!! My Polish girlfriend regards me as more or less fluent in Polish so I usually know what I'm talking about but that doesn't change the fact that it's not my language. I like to be seen as a cunning-linguist, hehehe

Language / "Poles" or "Polish people" - which is better to use? [200]

When u call Poles 'Polaks', it can be offensive or have a negative connotation. Much like being Caucasian and saying 'niggas'. African-Americans can say 'niggas' amongst themselves, much in the same way as a Pole could say 'jestem polakiem' and it would be acceptable. It's like saying dickhead or fuck. What one is worse? Well, it depends on the intonation and intention of the speaker. Most would say fuck but it could be used to express frustration whereas dickhead could be used as an insult towards another or others. It just depends on ur audience!!

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [123]

Don't confuse an inferiority complex with one of transition. The Polish nation is in a state of flux, not only with the change of govt, but also with the recognition of qualifications abroad. Many years ago, the EU was seeking to harmonise/streamline this process but it gets obfuscated somewhat in reality. The waters got muddied in other words. Poles are proud and sometimes overly so but maybe that's a defensive posture that serves to drive them forward. Americans cannot exactly be too proud now either. As 'lesser' said tacitly/implicitly, u need benchmarks or yardsticks by which to gauge urselves. What is success and self-actualisation after all? The point is that u have to know what u want. If u don't know what u want, u'll never get it. As the great US comedian Bill Hicks once said, "u gotta use ur options folks". If America is the leader, then know what ur goal is and pursue it without any complex by using ur options

News / 10,000 ISRAELIS READY TO CLAIM FOR POLISH CITIZENSHIP AND POLISH LAND! [628]

Back to the question, how would Mr Tusk handle this situation? The debate has been raging for many years as to Israel's entitlement to occupy their territory, and force has been used to defend it. One wonders how Poland would contest the right of Jews to live in Poland based on bloodlines/genealogy

Life / What's wrong with you, Polish people - is it an inferiority complex? [123]

Of course, they can mutually co-exist but I was merely trying to differentiate them. It just depends who u ask, some Poles will tell u that all is well and that they are on an even footing with their neighbours on a range of issues whereas others may feel that Poland has some catching up to do. Statistically, Poland has been one of the fastest growing, if not the fastest growing economy in recent years amongst the new HCP's/accedents to the EU Treaty. The German economy was in a slump for quite a while and lost some credibility. The Poles must simply realise their potential

OK, Jews can live here as of right but if 10,000 claimed land that was contentious then the Polish govt would surely have sth 2 say about it. In the interests of due process, I guess that Polish courts would have no choice but to hear out their claims. It shouldn't be unduly problematic as Poland has a land mass probably 3 times that of Britain's who have accommodated 800,000 Poles so 10,000 shouldn't rattle too many cages

Which shows that Jews aren't treated as one like Americans are. Americans, through embassies and consulates, protect their citizens to an amazing extent abroad and passport issues rarely pose a problem. I was unaware that Jews had to push so hard on the passport front

Yeah, Chechens have also been flocking to Poland in their droves, not without some controversy but achieving their goal. The Schengen agreement is yet another initiative that redefines positions. The Western countries have a greater commitment to enforcing human rights agreements

Poland is a central European country but if u look at my posting carefully, I never said or even implied that Poland wasn't Western. They have a greater commitment than countries who are not signatories to the ECHR. Turkey being a prime example, they were denied access for repeated violations of Article 8 in particular. Turkey, in my mind, is not classically Western, it's borderline

Quite frankly, the biggest problem in Poland is the salaries that the 'przyciętny Polak' receives. From talking with my Polish friends, they are confident in their abilities to pass their respective examinations but they have it hard. They slave away at Uni and receive very little by way of financial reward from their jobs. They must have great intrinsic motivation or act out of necessity in order to move forward in life. Sad but true!!

News / Poland - Third World Country?? [300]

There are a couple of industries here in Poland that could possibly rival those in America. I have in mind telecommunications esp, Poland has some great companies that could be described as cutting-edge. Yeah, there is some poverty here but there is in Scotland also and Scotland has some of the best industries in the world, e.g tourism, farming, oil/gas etc etc. Poland is not a third world country although it still lags behind France, Germany and the UK in certain areas. Give it time tho

To Krazy Kazu, fair enough, Poland is steeped in history and traditions and I personally wouldn't like to see too many more foreigners here but u have to look at the rights of people. We are not talking large numbers coming into Poland. In Britain, esp in Scotland, we have accepted many Poles which has raised awareness of your culture and, in the process, has heightened curiosity. It would be unfair to be overly strict on Brits and other countries to turn them away due to an ostensibly NS agenda
