Food / The 12 dishes of Poland on Christmas Eve. [51]

Great post, rybnik :)

Dining in amongst lovely Poles is an excellent experience indeed! I landed on my feet on that one :) Their hospitality is virtually unsurpassed!

Life / Polish holiday tradition - granny dumping? [13]

I-S, without a wink?? Poland is a family-oriented culture where babcia and dziadek play an integral role. Where do you think 'babuni' mayo and ham comes from? Yes, 'just like babcia did it'. All that emotional support over the years as well. In Holland, they acknowledge that and a duty of care is owed. There is some element of truth about the OP's contentions though to what extent, who knows?

More of the same again!! Only, I thought the carp was chicken and got a nasty surprise. Xmas 2012 will likely be spent in Scotland. I fancy a change.

Still, it's decent here!

Life / Some Polish dogs have a very miserable life [46]

I'd be very careful about smearing allegations against Poles without more solid evidence. Yes, I have seen isolated incidents of cruelty but visible love in the great majority of cases.

Life / The rise of ' Generation rent ' in Poland. [26]

I can't vouch for the overall accuracy of that statement, delph, but I know of one case where it rings true. An elderly lady is occupying space that she doesn't need and preventing a family from moving there. I can imagine others doing likewise.

Ah well, it's Xmas so no lebensraum talk today ;) ;)

Wedle, that's really hard to ascertain. Only political discussions seem to rate higher on the BS scale than ones pertaining to Economics.

I rented for far too long here in Poland but that was due to me not knowing if I was going to stay in the early days. Poles have a different set of variables entirely.

Work / The level of English of Polish teachers of English. What do you think of it? [101]

Oh, I did watch some in my last school. Very thorough and only the very occasional 'mistake' in pronunciation. Then again, natives pronounce words differently so what does it really matter? It doesn't stop at the AmE Vs BrE level, e.g semi (SEMAJ/SEMI). Even within Britain, there are many differences. Where a 'proper' Londoner would say 'a historical book', a commoner would say 'an 'istorical book'. Such is life!

Good thread, Wedle. Renting and the Boomerang Generation are visible in Polish society. Couples fare a little better but they still have to tighten their belts.

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

Yeah, quite accurate for the most part, Pierdolski :)

I wonder if they'd say Netherlands instead of The Netherlands or Hague instead of The Hague ;) ;)

if....you don't have an ailment of some sort, you have to create one (largely the women)

They find the 'futile' bit funny tho :)

you put foreign recipes into a Polish cookbook ;)

if.....you find a way to incorporate pickles/gherkins into all meals

you start with a large spiel when asked 'how are you?'

you think Poles are as homogeneous as the Borg ;)

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

Well, they've moved it closer (to Serbia) ;)

As for the thread, America still has its lures. I mean, wouldn't you take such a long flight for a Starbucks? ;) ;)

Exactly, Penn. Outsourcing is crippling the middle class in the US. Operational costs are high when domestic firms ply their trade but China is the big undercutter. Now, international collaboration is fine to a certain extent but tradition is being done away with by huge multinationals that, in one swish of a pen, undo years of tradition.

PP, try telling that to your govt .

Do you really think the Shanghai Group will just sit back and let Iran be attacked? Putin has already warned the US. Russia has invested a lot in Iran's domestic nuclear program. They do not want to see their investments wiped out.

America is just going to get poorer if it attacks Iran. It will tip you over the edge and will also anger China, a country which, in a sense, props up America.

What else could it be? The Saudis have Bahrain and The Arab League are dealing with Syria. What does that leave?

It's diabolical how bad things have become. I wonder how Obama would react if he saw pictures of dead soldiers on billboards during his electoral campaign. Distasteful? Yes but I didn't send them to their deaths, he did! 30,000 more? 30,000 more mine dodgers fighting for what??

It's all part of their strategy. I can safely say that agents are operating and orchestrating behind the scenes. Just after their pullout from Iraq, huge explosions have taken place. They will look to divide the Sunnis and Shia and also to depict Maliki as a bad man. They will keep the option of reentering open in the name of increasing security there.

All this spending on the war has meant that the taxpayer has been bled dry while corporations have lined their pockets in grand fashion. It's really quite serious!

Ceper, Clinton really accelerated that process but the icing on the cake was the PNAC of 1997. The neocons took it to a new level but Clinton, through the auspices of NATO, committed atrocities.

Delph, in that the Democrats in America are a bunch of drunks? ;) ;)

So SLD don't broadly resemble the Democrats in America? I'm not issuing my opinion here, just asking what you think, delph.

Delph, be fair :) I watched an episode of Gossip Girl where they said 'pierogies' but they were not PolAms. I can't speak for others but I don't imagine it to be too widespread.

I would still like to know your interpretation of Democrat as applied to the Polish political system.

I think that's for another thread.

Many people are drawn to negativity so that's one possible answer for the thread.

USA, Canada / Where do most Polish-Americans identify on the political spectrum? [142]

Thanks, DE. What is Letterman doing there at no23?? ;)

Quick question for PolAms here. Why hasn't Obama followed through on the carrot/stick approach with Iran? Easy answer, really.

Patronising attitude of an imperialist?? What do you mean? Being an imperialist is a mind-set which I don't identify with. Look back on the 9/11 threads. I reject hegemony through things like the PNAC. Another example? Chechnya. I disliked McCain's opportunistic dig at Russia. I see the Russian side of things at times but what they did in Chechnya was just wrong. Control of the Caucasus was key and the US and GB just let it happen as they do the same.

DE, I wouldn't be so quick to call it anti-Americanism. Some of the most patriotic and prominent Americans joined the 9/11 truth movement and they want what's best for their country. We see now what's happening so we understand their stance. The hawks are just itching to attack Iran but that would end badly!
