Owning a vehicle is easy, much more straightforward than the ridiculous system in Poland, As for insurance the Polish system is much better. Make sure that she realises that she has to be named on a policy to be covered, I've known a few Polish people get pulled up for it as in Poland the car is insured for any driver but in the UK it is car + designated driver.

I find most houses in Poland are just badly layed out. Also the concept of having a living room (one that you don't sleep in) and a dining room are almost unheard of. and what is it with Polish kitchens? they seem to comprise of random bits of furniture which has been rescued from skips.

I have been in some truly awesome flats in the old inner city building of Poznan, If only people looked after them they would actually be amazing.

I did Poznan to the UK last week in a bmw 320i (petrol) stuck to about 100 mph and used 120 litres to cornwall.

I can't remember the last time I bought a ticket, I've been asked a few times and just speak to them in English and they go away. Theres no information for non Polish speakers on the trams and buses indicating how the system works and given that Poznan is supposed to be an "international business centre" its laughable that theres nothing in English or German to explain what you are supposed to do unlike pretty much every country i've ever been to.

BMW sat nav is fuc king shocking, I removed the one from the 7 series as there was really no point to having it and to update it I had to go and visit BMW who wanted a fortune for the update CD. (I take it your on about the e46 model with the widscreen navi and cd drive in the boot)

If you treasure your car don't drive it to Poland, The roads are shocking and I have damaged several of my cars not to mention the peasants will steal parts from it while its parked Headlights, door handles and most definately your "M" badges (these will later be refitted to a **** rusty 4 banger e36 driven by the shaven headed type).

I even had fuel stolen once :( The standard of driving here is really low - non existant coupled with poor roads makes driving a decent car here and keeping it in one piece nearly impossible.

Rent something to drive to Poland like a Mondeo/Vectra etc as the rental cost will be far less than putting your car right when you return to the UK.

I'll vouch for that, the first time i ever drove in germany was in a battered 91 bmw 325i sat at 140 + mph with loads of funky noises coming from the diff and wondering why there was porsches etc flashing me to get over so they could pass at 170 odd mph. It sounds crazy but their roads seem to work like clockwork.

The speed limit on motorways is usually 140 kmh as a rule but your sat nav should tell you as you cross the borders,

For the most part the speed limit in Germany is as fast as your car will go, The majority of German Autobahns are derestricted although there is an unofficial limit of 155 mph. (kill joys :) )

The Berlin leg isn't bad at all but after Berlin up until the Polish border theres quite major roadworks and really narrow lanes so take it easy.

From the Polish border to near Poznan you will be on a road with 1 lane each way and fhuck loads of trucks. (you'll find this bit quite daunting as theres often lorries overtaking lorries whilst avoiding prostitutes)

Don't change your currency at the border wait until you get to a "Plock" fuel station on your left the Kantor there gives a good rate.

I normally take 16/17 hours from Cornwall but thats going some through Germany at night.

Good luck, its really not a bad journey i've driven it loads without any problem. Don't worry about the spare wheel nobody will check and don't break the speed limit until you get out of France as the french police are quite hot on UK cars speeding.

Make sure you have breakdown cover, do it through your insurance as opposed to the AA etc its much cheaper.

The reason for this is that they are **** and just a rebodied mitsubishi charisma.

The price of cars here is ridiculous, Our winter car is a 97 bmw 320i Its in immaculate condition and we picked it up in the UK for next to nothing, Here in PL you're talking 3k for the same car.

I seriously wouldn't buy anything in Poland due to the fact that most of the vehicles on the road have been crashed and bodged back together some with serious structural damage ie pillars and the roof. Even once repaired they give the car strong or weak points which weren't engineered into the car so when you crash it it won't perform as it should. Also the chances are it will drive like a bag of **** due to the fact that Poles don't seem to ever put cars on the jig to check alignment etc

In answer to your question I never managed to get a credit card in Poland and as i'm leaving in a few weeks I never will. (Funnilly enough I managed to get an Aussie one applying from Poland over the phone)

I managed to get a Pesal, well I think thats what it is, A scrap of calligraphy paper with a random number on it.

Regarding a phone contract I could have got one in the end but I simply didn't bother chasing it as i knew I was going to be here for 2 years.

Still having difficulties here with living a normal life and as both me and the G/F are English I guess that we will always have difficulties in Poland.

Ironically it seems that in my new home Australia, Things are over easy and everything can be done remotely before I arrive. Credit card, Bank account, I even called BMW to enquire about financing a z4 with only a 10k deposit and they would have done it there and then so long as i faxed them ID and they contacted my employer in aus to verify everything.

One extreme to the other. Perhaps one day Poland will bring itself out of the dark ages and accept the fact that the european union isn't just there to prop up its economy and they will be expected to give something back.

The architecture in the cites here is stunning but the lax attitude of people and the sheer incompentence shown by people in all aspects of life somewhat ruins the place.

Polish car insurace is expensive, fully comp is almost unheard of and I personally don' think i'd trust a PL insurer to pay out if there was a claim (I wouldn't trust any insurer but PL ones are probably worse)

On the plus side the Polish way of insuring a car as opposed to a single driver and a car is excellent.

They must have done something to provoke the attack, I've walked around Poznan in some terrible states over the past few years and never had any real issues. I can believe it about the police ignoring it as the police here are a joke but there must be more to the story than you are letting on.

1) I wouldn't bother, Poland is only in the EU simply so it can distribute its population throughout Europe and also so it can get EU funding which it can waste on train tunnels to small for a train and the lke.

2) Yes, Insure through CIS in the UK, you get extended continental cover for an extra 30 quid a year. Gives you a full year overseas.

3) Its possible but due to Poland being full of Poles they will make it impossible. As mentioned above the EU membership only applies when Poland is recieving handouts. You should expect for the person in the bank to make up excuses or even blame communism which ended 20 years ago. Failing that the blame will go to the Germans or the Jews.

You'll hate driving a LHD car, it just feels plain wrong + cars are about 30% more expensive here, Honestly if you plan on travelling back to the UK at least once a year keeping a UK car on the road is really easy!

With the average wage being so low and property prices being very high I don't think its they don't have the guts just its not possible.

In my experience Poles leave home when they go to Uni and don't often return to live when they have finished, Where did you get the information from?

Also its more common to live with your parents for longer in the UK as leaving home is very expensive.
