Life / Poland, maybe the world's last bastion of faith [67]

character traits left to their natural course,

so, naturally we're all a bunch of brutes or savages, is that what you're saying? i do not agree. all the atheists i know behave better then christians whilst christians sure don't behave like Jesus; not even close.

In World War II we were truly fighting for freedom.

who is this "we"? americans didn't really need to get involved as the tide had already turned by the time of D-day.

Could you explain why we were fighting a war in Korea in the early '50's?

USA was there under the guise of fighting the spread of communism, no?

Why were we fighting in Viet Nam?

not the same reason as Korea?

Pure FASCISM, the idea that waging war is virtuous or leads to virtue, also it is Anti-Christian.
Where did you learn this? Certainly not in the Christian Bible.

exactly.. but he possibly got that from an interpretation by a preacher? many do see things in that kind of light here in the states especially the christian right.

On the other hand the Roman Catholic Church emphasizes sacrificing and suffering.

so do baptists and others.. fire and brimstone folk.

Genealogy / The surname "Turek" [11]

there are plenty of germans with slavic names as well as plenty of slavs with germanic names.. look at the history of the region sometime and maybe you'll figure out why that is.

Secondly, why doesn't the government provide more child care, or lets people earn more money, so they can provide better homes for their children, or don't have to work so many hours so there are never at home to be with their children.

government? why the gov? it's up to an individual to make themselves worth more and be a better providers, no?

Many families are disfunctional in the US, but you seem to miss the complex reasons.

yeah but they are christian.. so what that many fathers are cheaters and drunk beaters.. as long as they are straight and a "family" all will be fine according to P3.

so far, nothing has been swiped.

yeah, whatever.. boo.

Today you can wear anything you want to Mass and nothing is said to you. Want to wear shorts and flip-flops on your feet? No problem.

if YOU have a problem with it, then say something.. don't sit back and expect others to do something while you only bltch and moan.

Thus, it seems that when the American public is concerned about war or the threat of enemy attack, they tend to be more vigilant and keep there moral standards high.

what? that makes about as much sense as the rest of your posts.. USA is at war now, in fact 2 of them... are the moral standards any better?? yeah right..

Food / Electric Grilling - I highly recommend it :) [30]

Do you use a charcoal chimney to get them started? I refuse to use lighter fluid all you need is 2 pieces of newspaper with the chimney.

or a soda can alcohol stove.. even less of a mess. :)

besides the usual burgers and dogs.

kielbasa, baby!!! ;) :D

i actually always preferred regular wood fire to gas or charcoal but that's hard to do living back in the city.

History / World War 1 - Poles on most fronts in Europe. Any good sites about it in English? [27]

Yeah...when did the revolution start? 1917 something?
The civil war just started...

right, 1917 and there were other internal issues already brewing too.. civil war.. etc. = a mess

The civil war just started...I wonder what with the conscripted Poles happened as Russia bowed out of WWI...probably marching home?

gulags, home, helping the reds.. i'm sure all kinds of different things; probably why there isn't any good info on that period.

the terrorists have won if you're thinking that way.

as were cases of abuse, addiction, abandonment, theft, violence, etc.

just because these were unheard of surely does not mean those things didn't happen.. as a matter of fact they did but were swept under the carpet in order to keep believing in those "golden days"..

Gypsies also play the violin

they also play guitars.. google Gypsy kings sometime.. super awesome.

In the news... problems today with gypsies in France. Seems even that tolerant place has had it with them...

what kind of problems? in france, many towns give gypsies land for their "campgrounds" just outside towns and villages.. that way they don't have to squat just wherever.. i think that's pretty cool.

Umm, seriously. Most of our gypsies over here aren't from India. More like domestic hippies. Ask most Americans what they think a gypsy is and they'll give you a description similar to the one I gave here.

you do know they are called "the travelers" here, right? the india thing is their ancestral "home" from way, way back..

They sound just like our gypsies! Only ours aren't Indian. Maybe our druggie hippie losers are just imitating the real kind...

no, that is not true.. like i said above.. "travelers" but yes, they aren
't honest.. most "do" construction.. watch out..

They are called gypsies because by a theory they came from Egypt.

not at all.. India

but it was a myth , it seems their origin was in India , not Egypt..

right

Do you have lot sof Cygans in America?

not really

Well, Canada ain't quite America on so many levels, but we recently changed our visitor visa policy because lot of "Czech" folks were claiming refugee status...

interesting.. hmm

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

Yes and looking at now is quite upsetting, ...............It made me feel quite sick to think of how many people died there.

yeah, me too. it's a feeling that is hard to shake. :(

Why would Nazis want to maintain accurate records of their 'prizes', M-G?

why indeed.. they did keep quite the records though and numbered every "prisoner".. why?

Isnt it about time we all moved on and remember that when we keep saying "Germans" these are the Germans of yesteryears and not the ones we share a union with now.

well, some of those nazis are still around, you know?

but we are now living in times where hopefully this will never happen in our countries again...

you are forgetting Serbs of the 1990s.. but they didn't waste their time building camps.. :(

Thank you for removing the negative posts from the thread.

definitely, it was a real mess a few days back.. good job Wroclaw.

History / Why did the reformation not have a huge effect on Poland? [28]

no, that is not right at al..

Yes, before the Swedish invasion protestants were quite numerous, including major Polish and Lithuanian noblemen, and widely tolerated.

Later on Jesuits converted a lot of Poles

In addition during so called Swedish Deluge Polish protestants (at least many of prominent protestants like Radziwils or Jan Amos Komensky) supported Swedish aggressor what had dramatical consequences for traditional tolerance in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

the above are the right answers.. besides the consequences of the swedish deluge the counter reformation was strong in PL and from what i read, mainly because of heavy Jesuit involvement.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_Jesus
PL-Lith commonwealth is mentioned numerous times.
