That makes a lot of sense. I suppose idiots are happier because they don't think about all the things intelligent people do. But also some of the posters seem smart kind of, but in a high IQ low EQ way (i.e. knowledge but really dumb at the same time).

I see I'm taking to someone who knows nothing about ballet. Even in the Soviet times everyone in ballet knew about the Mariinsky (well, Kirov), and the famous dancers. It can't be irrelevant! Russian ballet will never be irrelevant in ballet. Considering all ballet coming from Russia, there would be none of the Russian dancers who work abroad, no tours of Russian companies (which happened even in Soviet times, by the way), no Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Raymonda, Don Quixote, La Bayadère, Romeo and Juliet, etc.

The Mariinsky (formerly the Kirov and Imperial Ballet) is one of the most important ballet companies in the world, modern and historically. In the late 19th century, it was the theatre Petipa (don't worry, he wasn't an evil r*SSian) created many of his ballets

(Sleeping Beauty, Raymonda, etc.) there. In the Soviet era there were new ballets, revised versions, etc., and many excellent dancers (Dudinskaya, Kurgapkina, Kolpakova, Nureyev, Soloviev, etc.). Currently the Mariinsky is a leading ballet company in Russia and worldwide. But I suppose that isn't good enough because it's "r*SSian", politics above all.

No. I know a few dancers the same, I don't think they have eating disorders. With an eating disorder they'd likely be around 42.5kg at 167. That isn't nice looking and in a school is not allowed because of requirements and in a company strongly discouraged. Very low weight dancers often can't turn well or hold balances or stay stable etc., none of that is good.


True, even prima ballerinas (e.g. Núñez, Osipova, Misty Copeland though she's disgustingly bad). The closest to Russia in that way is France and even then not so much. It influences promotions (example, Maria Bulanova is only a second soloist) or a place in a company. This is also the same in other countries, just not to such a level.


Which are often terrible. Look at Paris Opéra Ballet's Don Quixote Act III and compare to Mariinsky or Royal Ballet (RB has beautiful costumes in Don Quixote).

Sometimes! Most of the time, no. Ballet dancers are 80% non disordered. It. Is. A. Myth.


Russia. No, other countries it's mainly the same, not as strict a lot, but still there. Same with the schools, though the styles are different and some in the West (e.g. Royal Ballet School) require previous training rather than no training needed, although that isn't the case with many (e.g. Paris Opéra, La Scala, SAB). Ballet everywhere has body type requirements (interestingly almost the exact opposite of the ones in Petipa's time, when "plump" was a compliment to a ballerina), like hyperextention in knees (a nice line but it's hard to work with) and long limbs, a small head, good turnout, well arched feet (makes pointework extra hard, I know from my own extreme experience), a long neck, long toes, long flexible Achilles tendons (does anything else have toe and Achilles tendons requirements?), etc. Almost no one has the right birth requirements (of course not everyone in ballet has all) to become a ballet dancer, and even most who do never become dancers. It's a very brutal world, people do what they can to advance.
