History / Life in communist Poland - personal relations [397]

Knowing that most Poles sucked antiRussianism

Some Poles were happy and smiling when they were "gifted" with nice apartments, front row seat in the trams, possibility of going to the theater during ww2 at the cost of almost everyone.

Then you got the same people doing the same thing for the Soviets, while people are being hunted like animals in the forests, imprisoned en masse while being starving to death, forcing them to lie to have anything close to a normal life to show as a proof as being loyal to Moscow.

Then you got of course clueless idiots who think they know best and are like a wall towards any information coming their way, cause it doesn't suit their current narrative their trying to push.

I wish for better relations with the Russians, but lying is not the way. Russians being unable to admit the truth about state policies performed by either Tsarist Russia or the Soviet Union is horrible

As it doesn't lead anywhere else then to hellish relations. They are unable to grasp single incidents as they are used to only having the state having the authority to perform anything and everything. So the action of a few individuals are automatically blamed as the result of the entire society.

They don't have individual responsibility, but rather group responsibility. Performed mostly by the state.

History / Did Poland bring on its own destruction in 1939? [70]

BTW, if AK, instead of being an enemy, coordinated the liberation of Poland

AK units did try that during operation Burza, after co-op battles. AK commanders were arrested by NKVD and normal soldiers forced in to the people's army.

Your rosey glasses about the Soviet Union would had made you a pinkey during ww2...

@Novichok
You know that Soviets infiltrated the people's army of Poland? Red army soldiers were inside bases just in case. Others worse people's army uniforms, young people not knowing pre ww2 Polish soldiers had problems spotting the difference. It perfectly shown by you and in the film "Generał Nil"

News / What should Poland do with the problem of Belarus? [1694]

@pawian
He is just mentioning what PO did, I remember getting rather mad when PO basically ignored democratical procedures being wrong cause at the local level was won PSL, and not PiS.

So PO lost justly all power, and has become a political dwarf now. I got so mad I even voted for a PiS candidate for president cause of it in Warsaw then while visiting. (Second tour, could only choose PiS vs PO)

One thing is to perform schenanigans on opposing political opponents. But disregarding fundamental democratical procedures? That group are not democrats, and never will be for sure. They even had the audacity to criticize PiS! What a shame, as I dislike PiS paternal political behaviour. But working for the dismantling of democratical procedures in Poland? Unacceptable

Well a war that might come to Poland, like... Again and again... This time! We will be better prepared!

I agree, the Swiss knew how to do it. Finns as well, make it costly AND unprofitable. That way they might finally just leave us alone in peace and prosperity building

They are still behaving as if Germany is going to invade militarily again *rollseyes*

Only danger for Poland militarily is from the east if Russians will think that Poland's allies are only bluffing with protecting NATO allies

History / Did Poland bring on its own destruction in 1939? [70]

I just know that at one point Hitler tried to woo Warsaw into an alliance against Russia....

Most of Europe (including Hitler) saw Poland as Hitlers ally, on the wrong basis by the cause of the Cieszyn/Tesin dispute between Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Czechs saw Poland as a temporary state, which soon be gone from the map of Europe. Polish elite viewed it the same way towards Czechoslovakia (I remember reading a book on the matter of Czechoslovak/Polish possible alliance.

Czechs didn't see any possibility or sense for alliance with Poland until it was too late after the Munich agreement if I recall.

Which is because the Polish leadership followed the concept of Piłsudski which was to balance between Germany (Nazi Germany post 1934) and Russia (Soviet Union) as the most optimal solution thought out by Piłsudski was to be allied with France and U.K regarding the best possible way to react towards any dangers/possibilities created by Germany.

The U.K and French alliance prospect was abandoned fully by Piłsudski after seeing U.K's appeasement politics. So after his death in 1935 his "fanboys" continued his politics and continued to fight among themselves as to who could perceive the best what the "marshal" would had done. Trying to claim his legacy as leader in Poland.

When the U.K gave false guarantees in the form of a diplomatical bluff, which the French followed up with. The Polish political elite quite naively trusted that the French army would follow through with an attack from the west into Germany and the U.K navy dominating the German navy, even on the Baltic with support for Westerplatte.

Which is also why it was paramount to withheld full mobilization cause of English and French demands.

The call on the bluff and temporary co-operation between Hitler and Stalin caught the Polish elite off guard and thought that the Soviet Union with it's communism was Hitlers main adversary. Meaning that Stalin would help Poland out with any confrontation against Germany. Which again is the repetition of the fatal mistake to trust Russians with anything regarding Germany as it also happened the partition (Bar confederacy).

Any Pole with knowledge of history will wisely and true disregard any possibility of Russian help. Especially those on the right wing of politics. No matter their ideological alignments

Polonia / Which country is better SPAIN or POLAND [100]

@pawian
Bacteria and such weren't known about until XIX century. It was discovered by accident at a hospital (in Austria?) when the mortality was high since people taking care of newborns and corpses didn't wash their hands. A lot of infants died from contact with corpses by the workers at the hospital. Until then, people thought it was the stench that did it.

Remember that modern microscopes and health science wasn't developed at the time. So them doing it on purpose is... Well... Highly unlikely...

If a person believes in karma that is, the native populations in South America ripped people's hearts out in sacrifices. It's shown really well in Mel Gibsons movie: The apocalypse

Other tribes being brutally subjected co-operated with the Spaniards to fight major factions that were capturing them in to slavery and sacrifices.

But, you siding with people performing human sacrifices. Doesn't surprise now

I would be surprised if the EU began with an air force, infantry and troops of the ground are the backbone. Air Force is to deal with what threatens the infantry/won't it can't deal with of it's own.

Infantry has defensive/control purposes, Air Force has the purpose of destruction/transportation

What? You would make a great soldier, Grunni. Keep trying!

I know, one of the soldiers even said it would been a sin to throw away such a soldier like me! :)

@Bratwurst Boy
Finally you noticed, started to worry about you. Fun to have a heated discussion again tho!

If anything, Polish far right is more concerned about not being spat on by Germans. (Only need to look up Rota)

I remember in my childhood myself, how happy I was just to belong to a group of neighborhood kids just to be there with my best friend. Then suddenly one of the youngest spat on my face, I instinctly with rage hit him in the stomach. To my surprise and everyone around me, had to bail tho cause his older brother went to fetch his big father (little me fight him? No way, I ain't stupid) so I retreated back home. Thankfully he became more calm when he chilled

I agree, problem is that since 1945 the Polish army still has problems of nepotism, and a subliminal non-professional attitude towards politicians which is a product of Soviet Unions red army mentality.

If the Polish army saw the government as a provider of means towards the security of the republic as a whole, not as a political "General" whom you need to obey every order without questions regarding the improvement of the Polish army operational capabilities, professionalism and lack of equipment/wages etc.

There should be set a standard of how much money each unit needs for it's creation (purchase of equipment/organizational work etc) and it's monthly costs.

Which would make it easier to organize it, there is too much experimenting currently going on.

Should just make a very cheap easy standard to build on, then improve it from there.

That is only if you ignore their view of Tusk being sent out of Berlin to "fix" things. They are allergic to all things German, mostly cause the opposition is more connected with Germany. Which would make them lose influence every time internally, which is why they prefer contact with U.S or other EU countries.

Tusk is the more "Germanised" option
While PiS is the non-German option. It would be downright weird for them to do it. The Polish military doesn't have that much power to pull through such thoughts.

Gefreiter Kania's army - the best fighting force ever! ;)

My inner Pole "screamed" I'll make my own army then! When I got refused two days ago to join the army. Thankfully I got a calm head

I only need to remind you of the Austria-Hungarian army for you to dismiss that idea. It would only work if officers spoke one language, each unit with their own language, and one or more non-officers knowing the officers language.

If Spanish was chosen (I don't know Spanish by the way)
It would lead to huge increase in influence in South America. Potentially in the U.S too if how things are going continues. Nobody see Spain as a challenge either today.

I have no problem with English....the problem here will be the French who will want to avoid using English at all costs! *shrugs*

One could push for a European language which isn't part of the EU as a compromise, Norwegian basically. (It's practically Danish), Denmark and Sweden won't object as it's not each other's language and is easily understood by them.

Most Europeans don't have a beef with Norway or even care. Also it would be an argument politically inside Norway to join the EU

@mafketis
The purpose of the military is to deal with external threats, not internal ones. Which is why the police force came to existence, to deal with internal problems more efficiently.

I said mostly, not only.

An army requires a single language, for quick communication. Germanic languages are easy to learn, even by the most low ranking soldiers of any potential enemy army. (English/German in particular)

While Polish is one of the most difficult ones, which would lead to the army being mostly compromised by Poles for... Natural reasons...

Which language/nation should be the most dominant in the army? That is the question, in the past it was popular to use German as military language, how popular that would be as a concept politically will be difficult

Having the army use Polish as a language would also refute any arguments of it being a German project. As far as history goes, Polish language have given the German administration the most headaches!

Sounds very much like the situation with the Fall of Constantinople. More mercenaries then standing army, lots of coin but, not enough soldiers.

If I were the German chancellor, I would push for the creation of an EU army mostly filled with Poles. (Germany has the most influence in Poland when it comes to economical matters)

It would solve any threat from the east (Russia) while it maintains better relations with Poland.
Also, any political group would think more before making a decision cause of those "bad bad Poles, who are so fascist, xenophobic, rascist and bigoted and misagonystic" which is complete BS. But the left doesn't need to know

They still think they were innocent and not paid by the Abwehr? Wtf

Can't they learn about German secret services in Germany? Or is that illegal?
