History / What was the general Polish opinion of Germany/Germans between 1920-39? [4]

@demara
That was 90 years ago. Hardly anyone remembers it.
You just need to do some serious research. By and large, in 1918 Poland regained independence. One of the partitioners was Prussia but Radom was in the Russian partition.

Then there was Hitler coming to power but it's you who needs to do the research on what year and circumstances you want to write about.

Language / What were the first Polish words and phrases you have learned? [63]

First of all, I bet the f-word in English wasn't that popular in the 60s or so as well.

Secondly, I agree with pawian about the partitions. Polish as a language would have been lost if it hadn't been for Poles who taught it to their children.

Including people who chose immigration.

It's not up to me to judge Polish immigrants who don't teach their children Polish but don't make it a political thing.

As for the communist times in Poland, Poles who lived here had to face those times. Not those who lived abroad. All the restrictions and poverty. They had to survive.

And I bet their situation was far worse than their counterparts' in the UK.

Had Poles not fought, Poland would still be under the communists.

Finally, it's never too late to learn. Nothing stops you from joining a course in Polish -an online one these days, though.

News / Thousands of Polish women attend Czarny Piątek rally in Warsaw [780]

@Ziemowit
Well, women I know just read different types of books. Perhaps some of them are on Tinder. If they are, it's mostly because they want to meet men who are also on Tinder. Their choice.

So you're saying younger women are on Tinder. ...

The funny thing is that men from abroad want to tell us Poles from Poland what Poland and Polish women are like. ..
Even those who have so little contact with attractive women that they take a man for a woman and choose a nick of a prn star as I have been told by another user.

To sum up, a great deal of Polish women want to have a traditional family. And they do want a strong and confident man to be their partner. Who wants a loser or a supportee? Duh.

Some women don't want to have children.
Some are pro abortion. Some are against.
Most are straight. Some are lesbian or bisexual.
As for reading romantic novels, afaik it's mostly elderly ladies who choose that genre.

Food / Which foods are generally disliked/unpopular in Poland? Which non-Polish foods are slowly gaining popularity? [138]

I bet even pawian drinks some wisniowka. All those flavoured vodkas are pretty strong, too. Although, it's usually women who have them.
As for żubrówka, people usually have it with apple juice.
No sane is going to laugh at you just because you choose beer.
Several years ago a guy from Britain died in Poland because he'd drunk too much vodka. He was probably convinced you need to drink vodka with every meal. He was elderly and it was too much for him. He died.

News / Why is Poland so hostile against Germany? Do they realize how their reparations rubbish damages relations? [512]

@Lyzko
Wait a sec. Didn't you say they had lived in Lviv?

@Weimarer
I really don't get the reason why you think Poland is hostile towards Germany.
In fact, it's you who comes to a Polish forum talking crap about some nasty parts of history and seemingly taking pride in it.

As for your 'pure breed', Slavic and Germanic tribes had migrated all over what is now Poland and Germany in distant past. Poles and Germans (Prussians? - I really don't know when Germans were Germans and when they were Prussians or whether I should use another name). People married whether you like it or not. They were neighbours.

And you still look kind of Balkan to me. And it's not like I'm trying to insult you - there's nothing offensive about it.

Also keep in mind, that dna test won't show the ethnicity of all your ancestors.

Life / I am being overchanged for water consumption in Poland? Help 1000 PLN? [27]

@Torq
It's wyrównanie. You can see part of the bill on imgur -link included.

Imho, it sucks it's done yearly as you get a nasty surprise once a year. We get it once a year with the central heating but when it comes to water consumption it's once every three months.

Basically what I do is to pay a bit extra every month to avoid high costs when the report comes but I guess it's more tricky if you just rent a flat.

450 PLN per month for czynsz water included is not much.

History / BARBAROUS / BARBARIC / BARBARIAN tribes in Poland [62]

@Weimarer
Well, Poland accepted Christianity from Bohemia.
If you're talking about the Teutonic Knights, they were invited to Poland by Konrad of Masovia to spread Christianity. What they did to old Prussians to 'spread Christianity' is another story.

To sum up, a lot of unchristian things.
On the other hand, there was Otto II. Luckily, not all Germans are the bad guys in history :)

@all
If he's in the photos he posted, he doesn't look Polish. Or German. To me.

History / BARBAROUS / BARBARIC / BARBARIAN tribes in Poland [62]

@Lyzko
Lyzko, if you have any sort of academical background, you know about the migration of peoples and people.
To sum it up, people move. You can't expect all families from a certain place to live there for centuries or over a millenium. Sometimes it's an individual case, sometimes whole regions.

Also, the presence of Germanic tribes in present day Poland and Slavic tribes in present day Germany plus centuries of living next to one another can't really make it clear what a pure German /Pole is.

@Weimarer
You're funny. But go on. Tell me more about it.

History / BARBAROUS / BARBARIC / BARBARIAN tribes in Poland [62]

@Weimarer
Do you want me to give you the name of the very Slavic guy who worshipped Svetovid exactly where your house is located :)
There were Slavs in what is now Thuringen - contrary to what you stated.
Why does the flag of Thuringen resemble the Polish flag?

History / BARBAROUS / BARBARIC / BARBARIAN tribes in Poland [62]

@Weimarer
First of all, you claim your family came from Silesia so you yourself are not 100 percent Thuringer. Secondly, eastern parts of present day Thuringen were inhabited by Slavs in the 8th century.

History / BARBAROUS / BARBARIC / BARBARIAN tribes in Poland [62]

To claim that people from a certain part of a country may have facial features inherited from tribes living there over a millenium ago is naive.

There were some Germanic tribes in present day Poland just like Slavic tribes in present day Germany.

Genealogy / Polish Orphan Refugee sent to New Zealand [7]

@jaimeek
Never heard of this story before. God bless New Zealand.
Try starting with the documents over there. Checked what information you can gather in NZ.
Then you can look for more information in Europe. But as I suspected it was in the USSR so gathering information might be tricky.
