Another issue entirely, is making an entire aquifer unusable through its contamination. Negligent disposal of wastewater from coal mining operations can lead to this water penetrating into the water table. This water is highly acidic, and often contains heavy metals such as arsenic and lead. If this happens, it won't matter if it's recharging, since it will not be usable for any human activity.
