UK, Ireland / What do you hate about England and English people? [142]

i mean really are you having a laugh

Haven't you read about PD and JustysiaS and their shopping spree advice?

In any case, why can't someone say they don't like milky tea?

doctors receptionists - they are always rude

I agree. I waited behind a pregnant lady who wished to see a doctor without an appointment. She was obviously in pain and didn't need the receptionist to tell her she was stupid. I asked the receptionist if she spoke to everyone like that or just people without the energy to tell the stupid b!tch where to stuff her reams of paperwork whe was demanding for the luxury of seeing a doctor.

In london when you want to leave you bike somwhere

lennyd

If you don't like the political situation in the UK, why are you bothering with a forum devoted to Polish language and culture?

UK, Ireland / How many of your co-workers in the UK are Polish? [30]

Ni Hao! (tone must be correct or this might mean something rude)

We've got a couple of Slovaks at the moment. They're good too, but I'm not going to seriously start learning Slovakian.

The destruction of trade unions.

Causes: a combination of the Tories under Thatcher and the trade unions themselves.

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people moving back home from the UK? [68]

I accept there is a burden on services such as NHS and Education due to the recent mass immigration

There are some immigrants who take more from these services than they put in by paying taxes.
But, with the UK's ageing population, there are many more whose taxes are helping to keep these services running.

exodus of Brits from this island, mainly due to this country losing it’s own identity and becoming too multicultural

Oh no! It's too multicultural for me! They come here and practice their own traditions.
I'm off to somewhere else so I can do precisely the same thing!

mortgages

If you have a mortgage to pay, don't you just appreciate a plumber or electrician who comes round to not cost you too much?

Now Leonardo, have you got some other forums to vomit your bile into? Remember there are people from all over the place here, not just Poles. And if you want to find a real peasant, I'd suggest you look no further than...

lennyd, do you remember the 1980s and the recession and unemployment, the 1970s and all the strikes? Maybe you remember the 1950s and rationing, the 1940s and the war, the 1930s with all the unemployment, riots and lack of cohesive government.

Food / Mother of all hangovers....Polish Beer! [71]

Strangely, I managed to comfortably drink more last time I was in Poland.
Maybe I was just drinking the wrong beer.
And the wrong vodka.
And the wrong spirytus.
Or it's just something that not having to go to work the next day does to you.

However, Black Boss did me no good whatsoever, but that was in England.

Have you tried to drink it from a glass, not a tin?

Drink beer from a glass and it tastes of beer.
Drink beer from a bottle and it tastes of beer.
Drink beer from a can and it tastes of can.
Mmmm! That lovely aluminiyummy flavour!

Remember the start of the 5th century? Crops failed for two successive years. Roman rule in Britain crumbled, and Britain was invaded by communist Polish peasants, who even King Arthur and Merlin could not stop. Things will never be the same again.

tried £omza before it tasted ok , a litte bitter though

I went to £omża and got £omża'd on £omża.
I normally drink bitter, so any bitterness was something I quite like.
There are about three different £omża brews. One called Export. I don't know where they are exporting it to, because unfortunately it's not to where I live.

Life / Reliable Weather Service In Poland? [25]

metcheck dot com might do it, but does anyone know how the weather will be?
I reckon forecasting has improved a lot since the days of weathermen with stick-on clouds.
Does anywhere in the world still have stick-on clouds (that sometimes fall off the map)?

Okay, so it won't work for everyone, so for those non-members reading, I am just underlining DTaylor's and PD's point.

Genealogy / Polish Tatar People and Names. [8]

I think I worked with one for a couple of days. It suprised me when he said he was Polish because he just didn't look it. A few swear-words later, I was left in little doubt as to his Polishness.

Life / Polish Nursery Rhymes [243]

I like nursery rhymes...the truth

Nursery rhymes somehow never disappear from memory, even if they become vague.
There might be something to be said for learning a language, in part, from a child's perspective.
Mother tongue speakers start learning from the moment they are born, in a totally different way to anyone who comes to the language later.

Not a good nursery rhyme for children. Sledz's are much better.

Nursery rhymes are notorious for being scary to children.
How can a little kid sleep with the threat of falling out of a tree, let alone being trampled to death.
Parents, especially mothers, have always needed some kind of release I suppose.

Jedzie osioł, jedzie osioł, jedzie osioł.
Uciekaj dziewczynko, bo cię osioł...

... I don't know how to say 'post on an internet forum'.

That would make a bad nursery rhyme.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

I think it depends whether you agree that Central Europe exists between Eastern and Western Europe.
As far as the almost non-existant Northern / Southern debate goes, I'd place it in Northern Europe (but maybe Central).
As far as the Southern debate goes, there are lots of lovely women there.

History / POLAND: EASTERN or CENTRAL European country? [1080]

Britain sat around during WWII with their thumbs up their arses

Disagree.

Russia and the United STates did most of the work

The first one didn't do very nice things to Poland, especially afterwards; and the second one turned up late, although they did quite a lot when they arrived.

I'm not asking anyone to be grateful to me - I wasn't there, and neither were most of today's population of Poland.

Any more videos, Mr. Southern?

Dont forget people,we had these problems before Poland joined the EU!!!

I think the British economy hasn't been doing as well as it is now for quite a long time.
There are many things wrong with the country, but finding solutions requires more effort than jumping on a bandwagon.

its a British trait,looking for a scapegoat

History / What do Poles think about Turks? [761]

I've met some nice ones and some not-so-nice ones.
There is a very good Turkish restaurant I go to occasionally, as well as a few dodgy kebab shops.
Of course, it's not all about food, but...
