The pope suggested all Parishes around Europe should take in a Syrian family, this would show compassion

This year, in the church where my family and I went for midnight mass, there were several families of Christian Syrian and Irakis refugees who sung hymns in Syriac language. That was amazing.

I have compassion for MY family first

Like Crnogorac 3 and others, you are just a self serving egoist with no sense of compassion. That you pretend to be Christian just shows how deluded you are..

News / Polish Wigilia on UNESCO's world heritage list? [30]

Once again, you will find this not unique to Poland :

12 dishes: in France/Provence, 13 desserts
no red meat: in my Polish family, it is no meat at all
hay under the sheet: OK (although never seen it practised in my Polish family)
extra seat: same in France/Provence
midnight mass: same in France/Provence

In addition, there are "crèches" laid (birth of Jesus with the animals.;) in most French homes

No. Muslims kill Christians. In Ełk and in Istanbul.

Well, you're just plain wrong. Apart form Turks, most of the foreigners killed in Reina were Arabs

He doesn't. It was just his response to someone saying that kebabs somehow enriches culture.

Nope. My reply was to Bieganski that kebabs should only sold by Turks..

So much for that cultural enrichment we keep being told about it.

You're right. In the eighties I remember how culturally enriched I felt every time I ate a zapiekanki , a prime product of Polish culture

News / Polish Wigilia on UNESCO's world heritage list? [30]

I know from first hand that Brits spend our Wigilia in McDonald's.

We are talking about Dec 24th not 23rd aren't we? Well, part of my family is British, and until I became an adult most Christmases were spent with my cousins at my grandmother's in Somerset. It was always with home cooked food and a very nice atmosphere and the time was spent playing board games. I never remember us going out. Granted, there was no oplatek, but instead a glass ot two of port to accompany the stilton, and I do remember two or three of my uncle/aunts nipping out at 10 pm for a quick one at the pub but they were back within an hour at most. In France, in Provence where I now have a second home and where we often spend Xmas with the family, it is also spent at home around a nice table. We start to eat at around 8 pm, midnight mass is usually at 11 pm and we finish the meal (desserts) when we come back. The custom is to have 13 differents desserts (not dishes) on the table.

News / Polish Wigilia on UNESCO's world heritage list? [30]

Professor Jarosław Dumanowski of Toruń University has appealed to UNESCO to include Poland's Wigilia on their World Heritage List.

No grounds for this, Wigilia is hardly a unique Polish feature. It exists in most Christian countries under one form or another and is indeed spent most of the time with the family; what you describe as restaurant hopping pre Xmas or on Xmas day is the exception rather than the rule

Indeed, so why then was the place being managed and staffed by North Africans instead of Turks or Iranians? Not very authentic kebab then is it?

You probably believe that all places selling pizzas are staffed by Italians?

Or is Turkey not Muslim and the frequent bombings in Istanbul are Christians job?

So what is your point? That Muslims kill other Muslims?

that is the new European political wave which is led by Marine Le Pen

Hardly new, the Le Pen family has been in the business of politics for the last half century!!

News / The first PiS led government in 2005 lasted just over 2 years in Poland. [129]

Only a fool lives on borrowed money...

The money runs out next year.

Actually, every government lives on borrowed money and the PiS government is no exception ...

Ziemowit is right. Poland has to date been rather more thrifty than other EU governments; its debt/gdp is only 52%, whereas for example Germany is at 71% and the UK at 88%.. If Poland brought its indebtness on par with Germany (71%), that means an additional 19 pts of deficit, which given Poland's GDP of ca 500 bn$ means another whopping 100 bn$ could be made available. Of course, it would be ridiculous to spend all this on a 500+ type programme, but it shows that no, the money has not run out!!

What can make polish people have more kids is the better economy situation in the country, possibilities for the kids to grow, living in moe friendly tax environment, etc, etc. Also, better access to flats - more flats.

i am not sure that is entirely right. Look at France, where the birth rate has been one of the highest in Europe (and not only thanks to immigrants :)), this was largely due to in my mind to the tax and allowance system which was until recently favoring families.

Now, 500+ (entirely a cynical vote-grabber)

Why do you say this? Given the very low birth rate in Poland, anything that helps give it a boost must be welcome. The fact that it is also a vote grabber is the icing on the cake.Only conundrum is why PO had not thought of something similar when they were in power..

News / Poland's political crisis deepens [228]

It's never been that bad, people just support one of the two options these days without any dose of critical thinking.

I am afraid that this is nothing new if you look at Poland's history. Although Poland was one of the first European countries to dismiss absolute monarchy and have "parties" (kings were elected, 2nd written constitution in the world), it never really managed to get opposing parties to sit down, hammer out a reasonable compromise and abide by it. I put this down to slavic temperament.. And that's also why I believe that Crow's dream of a slavic Intermarum will never materialize.. Even if it would, it would collapse soon thereafter :)

Life / Opłatek, not presents, epitomises the true Polish Christmas spirit [85]

Any links to that?

Here it is (in French unfortunately, but I am sure you are fluent enough to understand it).
lemonde.fr/elections-europeennes/article/2009/06/01/pologne-le-passe-controverse-d-un-candidat-nomme-bernard-margueritte_1200738_1168667.html

Here is the gist of it: on 4th April, speaking to Rzeczpospolita, M. Margueritte revealed his past contacts with the Polish political police (SB). [...]. The journalist says he was briefly registered as a source in 1971, under the "Gamma" pseudonym.

Funny it comes from the same newspaper who he used to work for..

why was it so important to Monsiuer Margueritte

You seem to quote Bernard Margueritte quite often; as an ex journalist, you probably came to know him personally? I do respect the man overall, especially for his coverage of Poland in le Monde and Le Figaro, but you are aware that he was a somewhat controversial figure, with contacts with the SB (and the nickname 'Gamma' to boot)..

dear Crow

To begin with, it is funny not fanny. Not at all the same meaning.. Your dubious mastery of English is indeed...funny

My polish wife, who lives in Turkey, believes this is another Putin provocation. I disagree with her, but she nevertheless still believes that you are some kind of FSB troll!

They throw grenade into the house and then sit back and watch as the Poles argue over whose fault it was, and it is working perfectly because Kaczynski is such strange man that he's more obsessed with fantasies and revenge that splits and divides Poland, rather than the bigger picture

+1! As good an analysis as it gets!

News / Jesus Christ is Now Officially the King of Poland [164]

@Polonius3
The statue was commissioned from public funds by the mayor of Publier without a debate and decision by the council. So a group of inhabitants of Publier attacked the decision in front of the judge (tribunal administratif). That is what triggered the whole case.

+1.. although having "In God we trust" as their motto makes the US a mildly convincing example of separation between church and state..At least, it is true that both deeply religious people and complete atheists can feel at home in the US ..

News / Jesus Christ is Now Officially the King of Poland [164]

@Crow, & Dolno

Unfortunately, when you read the full article (in French, sorry), you will see that it is a little more subtle than what the headline in English says

lemonde.fr/societe/article/2016/12/03/haute-savoie-la-justice-ordonne-le-deplacement-d-une-statue-de-la-vierge-d-un-parc-communal_5042930_3224.html

And Crow, if there is trend, it is going in the opposite direction right now; Fillon, who has good chances to be the next French President, is a staunch catholic

@dolnoslask

You are right Dolno, but Crow wrote: "France banned statues of Holy Mother from public parks"; Note the "s" (statues and not a statue) which implies that this is a general rule, which it is not. The case you a referring to is a single case in one city and the court made the judgment because the installation of the statue had been funded by municipal funds without a proper vote/decision by the council. Very different, no?

Life / Opłatek, not presents, epitomises the true Polish Christmas spirit [85]

To be sure, present-day Turkey was Christian long before it was invaded by the Muslim Crusaders.

Indeed, and before this it venerated the Greek and Roman Gods, and before this it was pagan. In fact, both the Christian period and the Muslim one , which both lasted around 1,000 years (the latter one still ongoing) are small blips if one takes into account that humans have been living in Anatolia for at least 10,000 years

There was no such thing as "Turkey" during his lifetime, nor would there be for hundreds of years.

Well, I was obviously referring to the geographical part of the world which is now Turkey. But we can be even more pedantic than you, Dominic B. Let's call it Turkey, formerly know as Lycia, Asia Minor, part of the Roman Empire ( abbreviated as Turkey, fkaLAMpotRE). And we can start doing the same for each reference; for example, Boadicea would not be born in Britain, but in England, formerly part of the Roman Empire (England, fpofRE)!
