UK, Ireland / Should an English website in UK have Polish translations? [12]

"I had to learn Polish to survive here;" All credit to you Jon but from my experience not everyone makes an effort to learn their host countries language, the elderly find it especially difficult to learn a new language, oh and the cost of language classes can be an issue sometimes.

I also live part time in Austria and Spain but my skills in these languages are poor , to be honest I would struggle to find the time to go to class, bit of work in progress for me, so it is useful to have Government websites in multiple languages.

All said Google translate is pretty good nowadays.

Life / How much it will cost approximately to have a dog in Poland? [12]

I would say that if you plan to come out to the sticks (countryside) to walk your dog please be careful, there are many dogs on the loose and some of them would fall under the category dangerous dog elsewhere in Europe, the last thing you want is to be caught in a fight between your dog and a wild dog.

It is legal to buy pepper spray in Poland to protect yourself and your dog from harm, I suggest you get a tin for when out in the country, oh and read the instructions before you go out so you know how to use it if needs be.

Oh to add if you are a visitor to Poland do not take the spray home with you it is illegal in allot of other /eu countries.

News / Polish bishop caught with 2,5 promille [45]

Doug " tuneless warblings " Try living in the middle east call to prayer 5 times a day what a nightmare, air con and triple glazing is a must.

I was glad to be out of there to be honest, as a westerner there were places I could not go near after Friday prayers dependent on how much the iman had stirred up the locals with his sermons.don't tell me Poland's that bad in comparison.

Mind you an iman would be in loads more bother if he was drunk in a public place in saudi.

Life / Stereotypes about Polish people being stupid? [281]

Spade a spade,

found a link that explains the problem pretty well

npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2013/09/19/224183763/is-it-racist-to-call-a-spade-a-spade

looks like it would of been a problem at school in the 70's for me to say it links to malcom x and some books written at the time.

best advice is not to use it nowadays, I don't.

Just goes to show that you can be called out as a racists, or get accused of stereotyping when you dad no intent to do so.

I guess you have to keep up with changes in society so as not to offend, wife told me off for saying colored when refering to black and Asian people, It now should be black asian mixed race.

Trouble is that people used colored when i was a kid , and it kind of stuck , I had no intention of offending by using that term.

Is there a list that is kept up to date anywhere ,as to what is currently acceptable and not acceptable nowadays.

Calling polish people eastern Europeans is problem for for me as I don't see Poland as eastern European, it was always middle Europe, maybe it is due to Soviet occupation of Poland after WWII.

Life / Consumer Rights & Returns in Poland [22]

Back n the day when we first bought our place in Poland, I thought it would be a god idea to buy some of our electrical good in the local town.

So wife and I found a shop , we bought a washing macihne and a fridge freezer and a 5zl plug adapter, we didn't haggle on the price.

A few weeks later I tried to use the 5zl adaptor, it was no good one of the pins was loose, I took it back to the shop expecting to get a replacement.

No such luckk , he basically accused me of breaking it and said he would have to send it back to the manufacturer (China) and await their decision. what a knob I thought, I told him I would never buy anything off him again (I still remind him about the adapter when I see him shopping in town).

I have found the above is typical of customer services where I live, big sheds like media expert and castorama are a tad better.

I once returned some twisted floorboards to castorama, the guy promptly got out his tape measure to one of the boards which was still half straight, he said he could not replace the whole board and offered to chop it in half and return the value of the spoiled half. I told the idiot i needed a full board, this fell on death ears.

This is all part of the fun here. We find the good in Poland still outweighs the little hurdles you need to cross in daily life.

Life / Consumer Rights & Returns in Poland [22]

Another Castorama Saga,

A Brit neighbor of mine bought a table saw from casta drama, after a month of use the motor blew up, he asked me to tag along to the store with him in case there where any problems.

Of course there was a problem , He went to the service desk and complained In English as he can't/ won't speak Polish.

needless to say an argument ensued the store stating that they would have to return the saw to the supplier for repair that could take six weeks.

My friend (Who has lived in Poland for six years) argued that there should be an immediate replacement, he told them he had spent 30,000 zl at the store in the last few months (Which he had but forgot to put the receipts in his pocket when we left his house ).

Needless to say his hand went into his pockets and no receipts were to be found, the surrounding staff members proceeded to ridicule him (in Polish) between themselves and accuse him of lying he is 70 years old..

At which point I exploded in Polish , I demanded they get get the store manager, my wife came running over to see what all the noise and commotion was over,.

Eventually the manager turned up I explained that the staff were rude and accused the customer of lying, I asked them if they thought it ok to ridicule someone in Polish when he didn't speak polish, they were all red faced, I told them I would write a letter to the head office and proceeded to take note of their name badges.

Manager promptly filled out a note and my friend got his money back straight away, we went to the isles an bought a better model.

I never intended to send a letter (Not one for getting someone the sack over a moment of stupidity) but it did do the trick.

Feedback / Polish forums members - please stop being agressive and dishonest. What a waste of potential. [48]

Must say that before I moved to Poland I found the forum main topics useful, I still use it today to ask questions and usually get an quick answer.

Yes there are trolls here and some members spout of fa bit including me , the mods do a good job in general and quickly dump stuff that is off topic into the bin (Random chat) .

If you have questions or have something to discuss then feel free to post, I am sure the majority here will respond in a helpful way.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

"Polonia who settled in the UK after the war absolutely despise the new wave of immigrants"

I completely disagree go into any Polish club in the UK (created by Poles just after the war) and you will see the effort that has gone into helping the new Polish migrants who are coming into the UK, no one is despised.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

I spent a few of my teenage Sundays in one on Sherwood Rise in Nottingham .

I know Doug you told me already, i didn't want to mention it as its personal info. no offence taken by me.

The clubs are doing well, the bars are full and the kitchens are at full swing providing meals, polish classes and the church are full nowadays. The clubs were in decline until the new wave arrived.

There were some minor issues where some of the older generation didn't see eye to eye with some of the incoming youngsters, but mostly this has been smoothed over, Money in the clubs coffers and a full church far outweigh the odd spat about going to church every Sunday, some of the new incomers need a poke in the ribs if they don't stand for the British and Polish Anthems.

From personal experience non of my Polish friends in the UK, both new and old generation would vote for Brexit.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

There's already an established link between organised nationalism and mental illness.

So are you saying that because I sing the Polish national anthem I am mentally ill,?

This all sounds like the hate speech that came out of Nazi Germany in the 30's, designed to dehumanize a race or a group of people.

"Don't be disingenuous.",

You won't draw me into one of your traps, I have seen it in action too many times.

Answer the Question jon, let me re-phrase would you say that a Scottish nationalist is mentally ill.

Please backup your comment with hard proof "There's already an established link between organised nationalism and mental illness."

"People have been conditioned to believe "

This may or may not be true but to label a nationalist as mentally ill is beyond the pale, we don't want to go back to the bad old days of Hitler and Stalin, at the end of the day democracy and freedom of speech should rule.

"we are expected just to believe things that another person has told us"

So true good job that we are free on this forum to call out some of the crazy comments that are made.

Back on topic I do think that the Polish and the Visegrad Group position against some of the federalist EU policies will be strengthened if Brexit occurs.

But In the short term I think that Brexit will be bad for Poland,

I'm pretty sure that she would have thought that she had a wonderful child that she loved very much, I don't think the DNA test would have mattered to her , the fact that some your family survived Siberia (Like mine did) is the most important and valuable factor here,.

Work / Electrician seeking work in Warsaw. Is it in demand in Poland? [16]

Yep ll the good tradesmen have left for England, Any electrician moving to Poland will find work, albeit the pay will be at Polish rates.

I find it hard to get quality electricians here in lower Silesia, I am luck I only need them for the distribution side and some three phase work, the rest i do myself.

UK, Ireland / A new mayor in London: opinion of Polish people in the UK? [317]

Let London have what it voted for , same with Brexit, If the mayor wishes to do something like banning alcohol or posters in the city then he has a mandate from the people to do it.

What does the actions of the London mayor matter to the Polish people?, diddly squat zero.

Migrant Polish workers might struggle to get some vodka , but they still will be able to earn a good crust.

Poland has voted in its politicians in on a majority vote this should also be respected.

In a democracy you get what you ask for and London got Sadiq Khan

"They have resisted the immigration agenda "

Polish and EU law is quite clear and immigrants are welcome here.

There has been a recent issue where Poland rejected some undocumented and unvetted non EU migrants due to safety concerns, but that is a one off separate issue.

"None of you seem to understand "

No I don't understand please expand on your line of thinking.

Genealogy / Can I feel a very tiny bit Polish? [21]

Poland is not high on the list for immigration, millions of Poles have migrated away from Poland due to economic circumstances .

Migrants are a bit more choosy, they prefer Germany,UK, as their promised land, a few genuine refugees do come to Poland but usually they do not stay long and jump over into Germany.

Poland seems to be attracting allot of migrants and refugees from the east, the Ukraine in particular.

Calm down Doug you could have chosen to live in the UK , and yes then your kids teeth would have been sorted for free.

Lets hope if the UK stays in the EU then some of the good things like the NHS model will be adopted across the EU
