News / Throwing away the constitution in Poland? [626]

Merged: Professor Ludwik Turko rejects award from president Andrzej Duda

President Andrzej Duda awarded Krzyż Wolności i Solidarności (Cross of Freedom and Solidarity) to professor Ludwik Turko (Physicist).

Ludwik Turko rejected the award.

Reasons he gave:
* The president knowingly broke the rules of legal state.
* The president hasn't accepted swearing-in of the 3 legally a chosen judges of Trybunał Konstytucyjny (Constitutional Court).
* He said actions of Duda are an exceptional case of submissiveness and cynism.

This is interesting, because Turko accepted an award from the earlier president of PiS - Lech Kaczyński.

The Cross is awarded to exceptional opposition activists in the PRL (Communist) era.

Life / Comparing Poland and Romania [108]

It makes more sense to compare Poland and Hungary.

Victor Orban used to be an euroenthusiast. Then he became a skeptic. Jarosław Kaczyński was always an euroskeptic. Not surprising considering JK can't speak english.

When Fidesz came to power, Hungary was almost bankrupt. When PiS came to power in 2015, Poland was relatively well off compared other EU countries, some even called it a model member of EU and praised for resisting the financial crisis.

When Fidesz came to power, the party who ruled before them had roots in communism, it was the equivalent of Polish SLD. When PiS came to power, the ruling party before them had roots in communist opposition, with few former PZPR members.

Orban called for changes in Hungarian constitution, which was written in 1949 based on the Soviet Constitution by Stalin, with some changes in 1989. When PiS calls for changes in Polish constitution, it wants to change the 1997 constitution, written in free Poland. Both Fidesz and PiS wanted to put their respective constitutional courts in chains, using the same rhetoric... but PiS wants to go in the opposite direction! Falling back to Sejm (polish parliament) as the most important ruling body in all cases is a callback to the soviet constitution. The ruling role of the Party.

Soon a good comparison might be Poland and Białoruś (Belarus).

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

According to a poll by Pew Research Center, only 19% of Poles responded that climate change is a serious problem. Only the Chinese care less.

President Andrzej Duda said talking about anti-carbonisation is heresy and anti-Polish. He went on to say Poland has 90% of Europe's coal reserves and that's why de-carbonization is only possible in the sense of reducing CO_2 emissions, not reduction of coal mined.

He didn't mention 5000-7000 Poles die every year from diseases caused by burnt coal. Poland might gain from cheaper energy, but will have to spend extra on healthcare. Also, less developed countries use Poland's stance as an excuse to keep burning coal.

And it's not just coal. Under the new minister of environment, Jan Szyszko, the region of Puszcza Białowieska is to rise wood cutting limits fivefold. Puszcza Białowieska is the last primal forest in Europe, it's on the UNESCO list. Back when Szyszko was minister of environment during previous PiS rule, he also wanted to approve a highway running through Rospuda valley, where many unique and endangered forms of life live. I remember signing a Greenpeace protest petition when I was on a nearby festival.

News / Poland bets on Russian oil again [82]

The last chairman of PKN Orlen, Wojciech Krawiec started importing Saudi oil. After firing him, PiS appointed Wojciech Jasiński. Now Wojciech Jasiński signed deals with Rosnieft (Tatnieft, its Swiss affiliate to be exact) to increase oil imports from Russia. The new contract replaces the old one, raises imports from 1.2 mln tons to 2.4 mln tons and will last 3 years.

Thoughts ?

Apparently diversification and not relying on Russian resources is not so important.

PiS likes Russia and Putin much more than it pretends. They use the same language ("Nation" instead of "Society"), share contempt for law and democratic institutions, share values (hatred for different religions, colored people, gay people, Jews, foreigners in general). Like with much else, you see PiS intentions by what they don't say.

I wouldn't bet a south end of a north bound rat on PiS supporting Ukraine. Back in the time of Marshal Piłsudski nationalists wanted to partitition Ukraine, not support its independence.

Hungary can afford to sign deals like this with Russia, because it's not in the geopolitical crash zone. In Poland's case, it's foolish.

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

No-one is talking about felling ancient tree stands.

And would you bet on that ?

Puszcza Białowieska is an area protected by the EU Natura 2000 program. European Commission only just dropped its legal case against Poland for breaking the tree cutting directives. The forest is on the UNESCO list of humanity heritage. It's a primal forest. How do you replace a primal forest in a sustainable way ? This can make Puszcza Białowieska lose its UNESCO status, which would be a big diplomatic blow for Poland.

When polish forests were last managed by Jan Szyszko, the new old minister of Environment, the state run company Lasy Państwowe became indepted for the first time in decades. He's also the man who ordered investigation of 'chemitrails'. Do you think he's too competent to do this ?

News / Poland bets on Russian oil again [82]

Saudi Arabia is much farther and much weaker than Russian Federation. It's a much smaller threat for Poland and the world peace in general. Russia is even carrying out terrorist attacks in Syria, for example it bombed a waste treatment plant, a market full of people, a mosque, hospitals, and 10+ bakeries feeding over 200,000 people. Organizations like Doctors Without Borders, Amnesty International and United Nations (ONZ) call these war crimes, and say they were done on purpose. Over 200 civilians were killed. These are all well documented with photos and videos.

News / Adam Michnik awarded for integrity, professionalism and high standards. Poland's No. 1 fascist? [321]

It's worse, worse than just seizing power. PiS isn't just putting its people in KRRiT (Krajowa Rada Radiofonii i Telewizji). KRRiT is in the Constitution in the same chapter as NIK (Najwyższa Izba Kontroli), and it's not a coincidence. It's because media, like NIK, are supposed to keep government in check. In most of Europe, media are supposed to do that. In countries like Belarus, Russia, Hungary media do the opposite - they're give government control over people. PiS is changing the role of media. Media council had issues with impartiality ? Clearly, the cure is to remove all doubt!

Conspiracy theory ?

Krystyna Pawłowicz, a prominent PiS politician:

"Public media are government media, and they're certainly political. They should serve the sovereign."

News / Poland bets on Russian oil again [82]

Aligning itself with Hungary is another way Poland indirectly gets close to Russia. Russia is no longer a communist dystopia, but a nationalist mafia state. That's a country where Police approaches a chemical company and proposes manufacturing drugs. Refuse, and they make a case against you. On another occassion a family company was senteced for selling drugs - they were baking bread rolls with poppy seeds. I guess they failed to pay protection money ?

Russia recently put Iskander cruise missiles in Kaliningrad Oblast. Maybe this time they won't be used against Poland ? Let's cross our fingers!

Your lies are getting old

This is exactly what Pawłowicz from PiS says. Public media are state media, they are political, and they should support the rulers.

You haven't been here wailing and complaining when for the last eight years

I didn't know about these forums. Hard to understand ?

Fortunately, knowing Poles, they're not going to lie down like the Hungarians did.

So optimistic. PiS line of defense - "everyone is doing that" - isn't helping. Poles stop to care.

News / Poland's election winning party: PIS proclamations [229]

On 6th January 2016, Victor Orban had a meeting with Jarosław Kaczyński here in Poland. Prime Minister Szydło wasn't invited. She's supposed to visit Budapest on 13th.

Several years ago I read about countries using the Westminster System, where leader of the leading party automatically becomes the prime minister. I thought that was curious. Now I know why it's important.

News / Mateusz Matyszkowicz, executive director of Fronda will lead TVP Kultura [15]

TVP Kultura is a public TV station focusing on cultural matters.
Mateusz Matyszkowicz is a an executive director of "Fronda Lux" and "Teologia Polityczna".
Mateusz Matyszkowicz will now lead the TV station. Another "Fronda" editor, Jakub Moroz, will take care of the channel's development.

This is wonderful, excellent news for everyone with strong right winged views who is Catholic. If there's a more extreme right winged magazine in Poland, I'm not aware of it. For reference - Fronda, Tygodnik Poświęcony (Sanctified Weekly):

fronda.pl

I don't count Radio Maryja, TV Trwam etc because technically it doesn't follow The Bible.

Speaking of journalists and integrity, Wojciech Sumliński is an investigative journalist and a darling of right wingers. It so happens that his book was recalled from bookstores in the middle of presidential campaign without giving any justification.

The book "Niebezpieczne Związki Bronisława Komorowskiego"(Bronisław Komorowski - previous president) plagiarizes several criminal fiction classics, including Alistair MacLean and Raymond Chandler. Whole paragraphs are ripped. I attached examples.

Poland - 10 860 000 000 USD, 1.95% GDP

There were also articles that Bundeswehra is deteriorating and incapable of helping Poland in case NATO was attacked.

News / Confessions of a paid hater / troll in Poland [42]

Angora 1 (1333) - 3rd January 2016 printed an anonymous letter from a young guy who works as a paid sock puppet / troll / hater. He is paid to post hateful political comments. Below is a summary of his insider view (the letter is long).

He works in a copartnership which shapes public opinion in the internet. The company is registered outside Poland and allegedly employs 300 people all around Europe. Most of them, including the employee, are students making extra buck in free time. They prefer to work remotely, from campus or from home.

The employee used to work as a telemarketer and was selling stuff to old people. A friend contacted him and offered a job - writing comments under articles. No specifics at first, then instructions to blacken a certain political party as much as possible. He received a list of 30 "facts" to support him in his writing. As a confirmation, he had to send a list of hyperlinks to his posts.

The goal is as many posts as possible. The more virulent the posts, the higher the bonus. The easiest insults are "thief" and "fraud" - they are so many nobody will try to sue you for libel. But best - highest paid - comments need many replies. So employees started cooperating, upvoting their posts, and writing replies.

On a small party, a manager spilled that he already did this work for industry: wind power plants (positive), car companies, insurance and banks.

But biggest contracts come before every election, typically every 2 years. They pay 0.13 - 3 Z£ for every post, of which the writer typically gets half.

In 2015 the biggest customer of such paid hater companies was PiS - almost from January. Presidential elections, then parliamentary elections. PO paid little - not out of kindness of heart or high morals, but because they underestimated paid haters. The most common and well paid targets of black propaganda were Komorowski (former president), Sikorski (former foreign minister), Kopacz (former prime minister).

Month ago they started targetting Ryszard Petru (leader of .Nowoczesna, an opposition party, currently popular but only 28 seats in parliament). Initially mild stuff like "A gdzie jest Petru ?" (Where's Petru?) in attempt to ridicule his then common media presence, now more foul stuff. The crosshair went from PO to .Nowoczesna.

As far as portals go:
interia.pl has the most anti-PO and anti-.Nowoczesna opinions. They block posts critical of Duda (president) and PiS (the ruling party).
gazeta.pl and onet.pl support PO and .Nowoczesna the most.
wp.pl is somewhere in the middle.

The employee sent the letter to Angora in hopes of making people aware. Most of comments, especially the vile and virulent ones, are paid. And comments by "old people" are almost exclusively paid.

News / Jacek Kurski, the new chairman of TVP (Telewizja Polska) [37]

PiS has promised de-politization of polish media long ago. To this end, they placed Jacek Kurski as the new chairman of TVP (public polish television). He was appointed on 8th of January 2015.

He's a polish politician, journalist and has a degree in economy. He was a member of at least 7 political parties, in chronological order:

First he was involved with opposition during PRL era, and cooperated with a number of right-winged parties.
NSZZ Solidarność
Porozumienie Centrum (led by Jarosław Kaczyński; he led the Sejm campaign of PC in 1993).
Ruch Odbudowy Polski
Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe (ZChN) - removed for tampering with list of candidates
Prawo i Sprawiedliwość
Liga Polskich Rodzin
(he then joined PiS again)
Solidarna Polska (removed once he started cooperating with PiS)

Court history

In 2006 he accused Platforma Obywatelska (PO) of illegally funding parliamentary and presidential elections from money siphoned from PZU. The case failed to find anything and has been dropped. PO counter-sued for libel and won. Kurski was ordered to publicly apoligize and transfer 100,000 PLN to Caritas charity.

in 2007 he was found guilty of libel, throwing unsubstantiated accusations at Agora S.A. (the publisher of "Gazeta Wyborcza" etc.). The sentence was, again, public apology and 10k PLN to a charity. Higher order court supported the sentence, but Kurski willfully failed to comply with it. In particular he was saying "Gazeta Wyborcza" can destroy anyone using its submissive judges.

In 2005 he was removed from PiS for spreading rumors that grandfather of Donald Tusk (then polish Prime Minister, now president of European Council) volounteered to Wehrmacht and fought against Poles in WW2. Upon closer inspection, yes, the grandfather did serve in Wehrmacht, but there are indications he was drafted, especially his desertion and joining of Polskie Siły Zbrojne. The grandfather fought for Poland until the end of the war.

News / Jacek Kurski, the new chairman of TVP (Telewizja Polska) [37]

Stuff Jacek Kurski said:

"I will be consistent in reclaiming for PiS institution after institution, company after company, office after office".
"I don't deny that in the domain of phraseology and portrayal of the world of politics I'm a receptive disciple of Jarosław Kaczyński".

"Whoever is going to raise a hand against (threaten) Jarosław Kaczyński should be aware Jacek Kurski will cut that hand off."

"It's not possible to vote differently than the leadership! Maybe bollocks like that can fly in the UK, (...) There must be discipline!" (about voting in parliament)

(82 words)

Long story short, he's a cynical, ruthless tool who claims he will do anything for dear leader Jarosław Kaczyński. I say "claims" because his history clearly shows he's happy to jump ship when wind blows the other way. He's been called a political mercenary, because when he was in LPR he was very critical of PiS, but then it stopped abruptly when he went from LPR to PiS, and Kurski was explicit about it. He doesn't have any strong views, just does what he considers beneficial for him. That's why ks. (priest) Krzysztof Niedałtowski was astonished to hear Kurski lecture people about morality. Speaking of morality, he doesn't pay alimony money for his 8 year old son.

Interesting. When ? Which unit ?

That's not clear actually. According to Wikipedia he either deserted to join Polskie Siły Zbrojne, or was a prisoner of war in an allied camp. Wikipedia has links to interviews and other sources if you want to dig more. Either version is likely unless he suddenly changed his views. Józef Tusk was a member of Tajna Organizacja Wojskowa (Secret Military Organization), which prepared behind-the-lines operatives in the case of war. When Germans arrived at Gdańsk, he was assaulted in his house, reported the assault to the police, which got him arrested. He was called a polish activist and a polish fanatic, dangerous to the security of German State. His family was evicted. He was a forced laborer and made to construct a concentration camp, then imprisoned in another concentration camp... clearly, Nazi Germany disliked him and he had reasons to hate them.

When you look at it that way, he might actually be the ideal person for the unelected dictator, Dear Leader Chairman Kaczynski, to appoint

Back after the presidential TV debate between Donald Tusk and Lech Kaczyński, Donald asked Lech:

- He might be a son of a b., but I prefer to have him on my side.

Newsweek reports that members of European Parliament are now getting e-mails saying democracy in Poland is not endangered, and it was the previous government, the PO-PSL coalition, that was most dangerous to democracy. They're getting those emails in thousands. Identical, prefabricated emails. For example an assistant of Thomas Mann got over 1400 identical emails.

They're in english, spanish, french, german and polish. Even MEPs from PiS are getting them.

Rzepliński, TK head (Constitutional Court) is criticized by right winged media and PiS for being a member of PZPR. Yet, he was elected by Sejm, and even Jarosław Kaczyński voted for him.

How do we explain this ?
a) Kaczyński voted for Rzepliński because of his affinity for PZPR ?
b) Kaczyński changed his mind about Rzepliński ?

I won't try to support a), that's delphiandomine's obsession. It's more likely that Kaczyński simply has communist mentality because he grew up in PRL.

But b), that would suggest Rzepliński stopped being a good person to Kaczyński. A person is good as long as he supports Kaczyński.

News / WOSP Poland charity - is it value for money? [60]

Polonius, you do realise that the more you make such comments, the more that WOŚP sounds like something fun and worth taking part in?

Haha, I couldn't put that better! You've made my day.

WOŚP is a secular effort. Jurek Owsiak is a liberal person and he's very inclusive and transparent about his finances. And that's precisely why right winged media try to discredit him. He's not even anti-religious, just religion-neutral.

They would love to say* that Catholic Church is the only possible source of morality and ethics. That without religion, it's all rotten and degenerated. Jurek Owsiak and WOŚP prove this line of thought is bull**** - just by existing and being successful.

Church is anything but transparent, so people hesitate to fund Caritas.

* and Jarosław Kaczyński even said that.

One of best known quotes of Jacek Kurski is:

Z tym Wehrmachtem to lipa, ale jedziemy z tym bo ciemny lud to kupi.

(The Wehrmacht thing was a sham, but we're sticking with it because dim people will buy it.)

He said that just before an interview in radio TokFM. Before they went on air, they had a conversation (Jacek Kurski + 4 journalists: Tomasz Lis, Wiesław Władyka, Katarzyna Kolenda-Zaleska and Tomasz Wołek). Tomasz Lis asked Jacek Kurski why he still insists (prime minister's) Donald Tusk's grandfather volounteered to Wehrmacht. He was bragging about it as if it was some great example of social engineering.

Made up by "hyena of the year" Lis.

For me the issue is that Kurski is an extremely biased and cynical man. He's been proven to make stuff up to blacken political opponents.
