Food / I SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM - the best ice cream shop in Poland? [34]

So I was googling Baskin Robbins shops and it turns out.... THERE AREN'T ANY IN POLAND!! In fact, it's only available in the UK. I'm surprised mostly because it's an extremely popular brand here.

So my question is
What's the best Ice Cream and Ice Cream Cakes shop in Poland?
If it's not a chain store, tell us where the shop is! :D

Work / Environment Science student - how good is my chances of finding job in Poland? [4]

I'm Arab with bachelor degree in Env. Sciences and 2 years work exp. in procurement (purchase) and 5 years work exp. in Teaching English as Second Langauge, plus I'm going to get a CELTA degree in August.

What are my chances of getting a good paying job there? I have to move to Poland for at least 7 years for my fiance to achieve her academic goals. I want to support her but I worry I am ending up to be a hindrance instead of support.

Travel / A four days vacation, where to go in Poland? [39]

This isn't in Poland, every human civilization that has a majority of people with the same heritage share these discrimination, it's a social response to protect the cultural and social norms. That doesn't make it right, it's just what it is.

Travel / A four days vacation, where to go in Poland? [39]

As interesting as it may be, but I rather avoid leaving Poland. I'm going on a student's visa, plus the travel outside the country would be a hassle financially and time-wise.

Any other idea?

Life / Showing respect and appreciation by Polish people, forms of greetings in Poland. [31]

How do people show respect to one another in different situations? I'm not talking about one specific setting, I want to know many possible situations.

For example, in Japan they bow to one another, they call each other specific nicknames such as san/sama/chan, etc. Elders in a group or seniors are referred to as senpai. In my culture, kids kiss their parents hands and forehead, couples kiss each others forehead in front of their children to show their respect and appreciation to each other. we call people after their first born, for example if your son is Ali, your nickname is Abu Ali and the mother is called Umm Ali. This is a way to show respect when talking to strangers and also a way of intimacy and closeness among friends. In fact, my uncle kisses his elderly mother's hands and feet every time he goes to visit her.

I want to know more about these things. What do Polish people do normally to show respect to one another in different situations? Please tell me stories from your life and friends and family :) your habits and culture in regard of showing respect and appreciation.

Study / Is doing study courses by correspondence popular among Polish people? [5]

Merged: Home economics courses for adults in Kraków and Warsaw?

Where can a girl take a course in Home Economics in Kraków or Warsaw?

Home economics is a field of formal study including such topics as consumer education, institutional management, interior design, home furnishing, cleaning, handicrafts, sewing, clothing and textiles, commercial cooking, cooking, nutrition, food preservation, hygiene, child development, managing money, and family relationships. This teaches students how to properly run a family environment and make the world a better place for generations to come

Travel / Private small pools? [Warsaw/Krakow/Olsztyn] [10]

How much is a lot of money?
I'm talking about a single morning, 3-4 hours in a private swimming pool where just me and my family can spend time away from other people's eyes.

Law / Here's an idea... I have multiple last names after marriage! [5]

oh if only you know the history behind this XD
It's something my grandfather's generation did and we're trying fix. Sadly I can only do it from within my home country and I'm an expat, and it would take me a WHOLE month of processing. Unlike the west, any changes to your name is a very complicated process.

Because of that, let me rephrase the question:
Can the girl change her last name to anything else besides husband's?

Law / Here's an idea... I have multiple last names after marriage! [5]

So I learned about name change after marriage thing.
To me it's a foreign concept. Our naming system is different entirely.
In our culture, you have your given name, then your father, then his father, and so on as much as you like and end it with the surname.

Like, Alex Jonathan Frederick Alpacino xD (you can put "son of" between each name)
Of course I made it as an example.
In her, you keep your name after marriage. I've never seen anyone who changes except Christians in Egypt.

Anyway, our last name is never really last name. I have a family nickname, a family name, and a tribe name.
In fact in my ID I have two last names, but only one in my passport.
But I never go with the name in the passport, it's a nickname not a real family name. Everyone knows me by my tribe name.

My question is, since my fiance badly wants to carry her tradition about this, and wants to use my tribe name since it's a lot easier for the non Arab tongue to pronounce, can she change her name after marriage to another name based on my national id from my country, choose a name that does not match my passport, or is it obligatory to use the same last name in my passport?

Love / What's a premarital medical check up in Poland? [15]

If it happens later, it happens. She can still make her decision. But isn't it more responsible to do this before marriage? What if I had some STD and not know of it? (like bad needle or blood transfusion or something)

Love / What's a premarital medical check up in Poland? [15]

True it could happen.
I don't know, I just feel she's entitled to know early on if possible.
And honestly I wanted to learn about adoption just in case :)

Love / What's a premarital medical check up in Poland? [15]

Go ahead. But I think it's fair for us to know what to expect? What if I can't have children? I rather she knows now and decide than find out after a few years and then regret.

Love / What's a premarital medical check up in Poland? [15]

I'm not sure where to put this one but I'm putting it in relationships and marriage since, it's a marriage related thing :)

What is a premarital medical check up? And is it possible to be done in Poland? How long does it take? Has anyone ever done it?

I was told by some friends that it's something good, at least to know what to expect to be passed down to your kids and such.

I'm asking because I'm interested to know how this is viewed in Poland.

Love / ACCEPTABLE modest wear for Polish women? [49]

With all due respect to you sir, I find it rather offensive to say that we consider women as second class citizens.
Modesty is a behavior known to mankind since the dawn of history most religious believes agree on modesty from both genders and add slightly more for women, not because they are less human but because they are more valuable and more important than men. By saying that we Muslims consider our women second class by the fact that they wear Hijab, what does that infer to religious women of other faiths such as some Jews and Christian nuns?

I'm here to balance my respect to your culture with my personal family values, not to debate whom is more civilized and human rights. If that was the case we should open a new thread but not in here.

If you have any ideas that helps a Muslim girl practice her religious believes in regards to clothing while maintaining respect to the polish culture and fitting in the best way possible, I would truly appreciate it. We will not discuss anything else.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

I see a lot of responds :) This has been useful for me, I'm still going through this but I wanted to show you some of the things I've found so far regarding prices.

So far, the best website I've found that offers good prices for hotels and such is booking.
For flights, I advice you to go to Warsaw directly, it's much more cheaper than going to Krakow from outside of Europe.
Try different websites and compare, and then RESET YOUR COOKIES, I was told by some friends that this actually affect the price. It seems to be going up as you go to the same website multiple times, some kind of marketing trick to make you believe prices are getting higher and you should book ASAP.

Try Kayak.com for flights :)

Travel / Activities in Krakow, Warsaw and MAYBE Olsztyn? and FOOD! [4]

So I am planning to go to Krakow and Warsaw in August, I'm going to spend a whole month in Krakow with probably a weekend in Warsaw and another in Olsztyn.

I'm just trying to make a trip plan so I wouldn't miss anything :D It'd be my first time outside of the middle east!

Sadly, most of the weekdays I'd be busy till 5 pm. So unless it's the weekend, I'm only going out at the evening.

So I'm looking for any tips and advice, suggestions and MUST SEE spots. But I'd like to point out, I'm not interested in night clubs and similar spots. If there'd be a concert I might attend (rock and metal) but I'm more of a cultural person and into classical music and theater. I'm DEFINITELY going to visit some churches and Krakow Castle, a friend of mine suggested to see Auschwitz.

I'll try to phrase it into specific questions:
Where can I go and what can I do as a cultural tourist in Krakow during a weekday after 5 pm? (I'm assuming that a lot of places would only be open for visitors during daytime)

What can I do on weekends in Krakow, Warsaw and Olsztyn?

What are good couples activities in Krakow, Warsaw and Olsztyn? (Basically, dating ideas)

If there's something I MUST NOT MISS in my visit, what would it be? (You did not go to Poland if you did not ........... [fill in the blank]) :P

What can I actually eat and where?
This needs more elaboration, I'm a Muslim so my diet is a bit restricted. For example, I can't eat any kind of meat unless it was butchered by a Muslim, a Christian or a Jew. I can't eat anything related to pork and wine (including stuff cooked in using them, such as animal oils, not even a drop of alcohol!) I'm most likely going to be a vegetarian for the majority of my trip but I'm good with that. I just rather I can manage to get my hands on some Polish cuisine.

Feel free to suggest anything, even if you think I might not like it :) I am very curious to see what comes to your mind?

Love / ACCEPTABLE modest wear for Polish women? [49]

Actually no, women can't drop hijab from an islamic point of view. It's a choice, whether they choose to follow or not.
But let's not dwell much into religious reasoning as this is not the thread for it. If you want we can make a new thread for you Poziomka and discuss Islam and choices in clothing?
