Tell me how do you walk from the UK to Poland?

Well...its a long walk of course...and quite a long swim...

But better than the long bus journey....

People used to go by bus because its so much cheaper...but it isn,t cheap any more...AND..it takes about 18 hours for gods sake...

By plane its two hours , and not so much more expensive....

I have heard that there are buses going there but how long do they take and how much do they take?

The bus takes forever....its a long nightmare full of Drunken Poles singing very loud all the way....

You would be better to walk it...

If the area around the tick bite remains red or grows in the two or three days following a bite, see a doctor sharpish.

Yes....don,t hang about , the sooner you get treatment for a bite by an infected tick , the better the chance of avoiding long term and possibly permanant illness that can really screw up your life...

I got bitten by one of these little bloodsuckers last year , but thankfully not an infected one...

Off-Topic / Countries and your associations in 5 words/descriptions. [56]

In Poland? I didn't know that. I saw the Baltic dunes, which look a bit desert-like.

Thats why the German Afrika korps D.A.K , did their training there before being shipped to the north African desert...

if it gets into your skin, you must go to the hospital ASAP. Anyone know the name of have pictures to show.

They are usually pale green in colour , about one in four of them carry the virus...

If you go into the forest areas you need to check your body to make sure you don,t have any on you , then remove them carefully without leaving the head part in you...putting surgical spirit on the tick , or Vodka if you have nothing else will make the tick release its grip...

Then you need to keep an eye on the bite mark and look out for the bulls eye type red markings around the bite area that will show you have been bitten by an infected tick...

When full of blood they look like a small pea with a cluster of legs and biting bits on one side... you are safe enough if you remove the tick while its still feeding , its when its finished feeding it pumps the white cells back into you , and possibly the virus also...

You don,t feel the thing biting you , so its important to check your body for these things after being in long grass or bushes... These ticks are actually deer ticks , but they will be happy to bite cats , people or dogs .... nasty little critters...

Real Estate / WOODEN HUNTERS TOWERS ON MY LAND in POLAND.....is it legal....? [59]

Ha.. a lot of usefull information from you peeps and some very funny suggestions as to what to do about this carbuncle on my land....

To answer a few points made...

Hythorn , you asked if i was a veggie , and said if not then i was having double standards in that i was prepared to eat meat but objected to people killing it on my behalf...

No i am not vegetarian , i like hamburgers too much , and i am not against animals being killed for food as long as they are treated well and killed in a humane way... I did say also that i am not against hunting , even if its done for sport , all i said was that i personally would not wish to shoot a wild animal just so i can put its head on my wall... I am not squemish about hunting , i was part of a hunt a few years back , but only as a driver for the hunters , i did not kill anything , but i was there as the animals were shot and immediatly gutted... I was parked at the end of the line of shooters so i was lucky to be very close to the animals that got away...having a full grown wild boar hurtle past you is an interesting experiance , i sat in the car after this...they can be very dangerous if you get in their way...

Anyways my objection was not to the hunting itself just the fact that they are doing it on my land , and close to my home... lets not kid ourselves , these people are not doing it to feed their hungry children , they are doing it because they like killing things , and they are not too fussy about what they kill...! there have been numerous incidents around here with hunters killing dogs , they are of course allowed to kill any dog without a collar thats not near a home , so of course the dog loses its collar after being shot , and is dragged away from any houses... The guy who was on my land last night with a gun was in a new and expensive car , so for sure he is not hunting any animal to feed his kids... my biggest worry is that i find one of my cats shot by these people , they are not simply farm cats , they are my much loved pets , and having one shot would for sure make me lose my sense of humour...

Hey , Warszawski , i think i know that guy you saw on the vintage sidecar wearing a German helmet , he is actually a Swiss guy , but lives in Poland , married to a Polish lady...The bike is a Swiss made Condor , not very many of them in the world , this guy has three of them...He and his wife just got back from a trip to Ukraine in an old Russian outfit...

Sobiesky...you said i have been going to Russia for two years , well not quite , i have known my Russian lady for two years , but only made the decision to move there to be with her a year ago , in fact a year ago exactly yesterday... It takes a long time to make such a move , and i have been hanging on here in the hope i can get the farm sold before i go , the guy who is buying it does not seem to see the matter as urgent as i do and drags things on a bit....For moving to Russia , getting married there and getting residency , a year is not so long time to take....You said the interview with the FSB ( ex KGB ) sounded a bit strange , well i was not kidding you about that , the FSB does not just deal with spying and the James bond type stuff , they deal with national security , and if a non Russian wants to be resident in Moscow , they are the people who may want to interview you to check you are not a threat to the security of the Russian federation... Why am i bothered about these silly wooden towers if i am going to Russia...? well if some beer drinking hunter puts a bullet through my head as i am walking in my garden at night....i won,t be going anywhere...!

Somebody said i was not wise to deal with this matter in my Englsh city way , as it could antagonise the locals...well , i have long since lost my English city ways , and fit in quite well among the Polish country folk....The first suggestion of trashing this tower came from a Polish friend of mine who like me lives in the country.... I have found out the hard way , that in the country its not a matter of upsetting the locals so much as showing that people can,t take the psss out of you... Around here , if you give em an inch , they will take 300 kms...!

is your land fenced in ? if not, it may be a simple mistake.

No...this area of my land is not fenced off firstly because i cannot afford to fence it , and secondly i allow one of my neighbours to drive his tractor over my land to get to his field for ploughing , saves him having to drive the long way round.... as you say , it could be simply that these hunters are not aware its private land , thats why i don,t want to do anything in haste untill i find out what the score is....

The reason with this story is that instead of sitting there and gather your anger untill you go berzerk and do something stupid you can just ask, simple.

You mean be reasonable.....its one way i suppose....??

The only problem with that approach , is that if he tells me to go fook myself , he is gonna suspect that i am the one thats driven a Russian army six wheel drive truck over his wooden construction....!

If you somehow could turn the whole thing upside-down

Not a problem...i have a 4 x 4 that could drag it any which way...

Usually they consist of tower with a small box on top with a roof , but this one is the basic model , just a ladder going up to a platform with an angled bit of wood to serve as a backrest....a kind of open top fair weather one....

I did think about just knocking all the steps off the ladder so nobody can climb up it....

So just use the firewood

I am tempted...but i have to bear in mind that i am about to apply for residency in Russia , and any trouble with the Police in Poland would not go down to well with the FSB...

I have recently had to send them documents from both the UK and Polish police to prove i am not a criminal... I think Russia has enough of their own....

Ha..tell em the deer did it.... everyone knows its the wild boars that do that sort of thing....!

Real Estate / WOODEN HUNTERS TOWERS ON MY LAND in POLAND.....is it legal....? [59]

I returned to my farm a few days ago from a short trip to a airshow piknik to find....

Somebody had put one of those wooden towers that hunters like to sit in and take potshots from..on my land...!

Outside of the farm yard and garden , which is fenced , well sort of , its a bit past its best , but outside of this area is an area of what i like to call managed wild garden with trees and long grass which is part of my farm , i own it...

Beyond this is a cultivated area , which is not mine...

Now i can understand somebody thinking this area of uncultivated land is state land and is not private property , but in any case this tower , which some Burak will come and sit in at night swigging beer and firing a high powered rifle into the darkness is a bit too dam close to my house...

I am not anti hunting , i know its a noble art and all that kak , but my own view is that i would not shoot any wild animal unless it was going to eat me , or i was starving and needed to eat it , or if it was in pain and suffering... The idea of shooting something for fun is just not for me...

I quite like that wild deer and boar come very close to my house , almost to my window , and two deer have been coming to visit me for the five years i have been here... There is not much i can do about people hunting near my farm , but i don,t really want some beer burak near my house with a gun , i am afraid my military instincts kick in when shots are fired near me...i want to shoot back...!

I think i posted once before about one of these wooden towers on my land , but that was a false alarm , it just got built on my land , and was later moved some distance away...

So..refresh my memory , is it legal to put this thing on my land , and if so , how far does it have to be away from any house...??

I really don,t know why the hunters bother to shoot near my land...once i get the Harley fired up all the wildlife for miles goes running..... I always feel the urge to rev the nuts off it when i see hunters.... don,t know why...?

Some of my friends say its not legal , and that i should just pull the tower down with my Jeep and drive over it...but i don,t want to do it if its there legally....i will just scare all the animals away with my loud Harley....... Oh...one more thing , i have the registration number of the guy who put this tower up...if i find out where he lives , is it ok for me and a few biker friends to go round his house for a gril and a few beers........?

News / Polish journalist's "show trial" Belarus [40]

They only get 10% of their juice from Russia , so i can,t see it making a huge difference if it gets cut....

Of course its possible they ain,t paid a lot of other debts too , and a sure sign the country is heading for big problems...

Wouldn,t fancy being a member of the security police over there when it all turns nasty...
