Travel / Motorcycle tour of Poland [137]

Hi...

I rode my Harley sportster from UK to my home in Poland , its a nice ride....

You won,t have any real problems being a lone woman riding through Poland , as long as you take the usual precautions any woman travelling alone would take....

As for camping , you can find some great camp sites along any of the main routes , if you buy a road map from any petrol station they will be marked on there...

You could have camped for free at my farm , but i am shortly selling it to a German friend and her Polish boyfriend , mind you , they are bikers too , so maybe you can fix something up with them....?

In the bigger towns you are quite likely to find many of the younger people speak English , or German , but in the smaller villages it is not so easy to find an English speaker....

Try contacting the Amazons motorcycle club in Poland , they are an all female biker club , and can give you better advice than i can about lady bikers travelling alone in Poland....

All i can say is that i have many female friends that ride in Poland , and none have been eaten by the natives yet....

Will you be here on the 27th...? there is a massive bike rally on near me...

UK, Ireland / Transporting items from the UK to Kalisz, Poland? [5]

it is 25 boxes all different sizes and 20 bags. the dimensions of the stuff we have in total is 160x160x170. the only item of furniture we have is a chair :) the items are house contents inside.

Aha... its a bit too much for me to carry...

I will be in the UK to collect a Jeep Cherokee in the near future , and drive it back to Poland , i would have been happy to take your stuff for free if it was just a few items , but i think you are going to be needing a small van....

Try making contact with the Poles that live in your area , there may be someone heading back to Poland with a van...?

Love / Dating in Poland not able to speak Polish [24]

Not speaking Polish is not a problem , as long as the girl you are interested in speaks English...

But try to learn a few words just to be polite...

It is possible to have a relationship with somebody you have big problems to talk to , but its hard work....

UK, Ireland / Posting from UK to Poland....not good! [53]

I have said it before , and i will say it again...

During my eight years living in Poland i have had lots and lots of parcels sent from the UK , many containing nice shiney expensive things , and not one single item has gone missing...

The only time anything disapeared was when my sister foolishly sent some money in a letter , and i am pretty sure that went missing before it left the UK...

Maybe i am lucky that my stuff passes through offices where everyone is very honest...?

Can,t complain about Polska Pochta at all...

It does take a month for my airmail letters to get to Moscow , but they all get there eventually , and the delay may well be at the Russian end...

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

why not? are you just prone to prejudices? wonder if there arent similar stories like your also in russia...

I am sure there are...

But Hitler declared that the war in Russia was a war without rules , a fight to the death , and both sides knew it....

It was a savage war , but i am sure there were cases of human kindness among the ordainary soldiers...

At least in the begining...

USA, Canada / Living in Poland - prospects for Alabama guy ... need some advice! [146]

I have no doubt her story is true... why should she lie about it...?

My sons girlfriend , who is Polish refuses ever to come back to Poland...

The reason...

She left her mother in sole charge of a flat she owned...the mother first rented it out , then later sold it and stole the money....

Sorry , but not all Poles are honest...

I am sorry for that. Please forgive me. On second thoughts and after some research I learnt that theft happens at airports, indeed, though it is so unbelievable.

No problem...

You should know from all the stuff i have posted in the past , that i am not anti Polish ...I have many Polish friends here in Poland , and in the UK , my son has a Polish girlfriend....

I am always ready to defend Poland if somebody says something bad thats not true , and i am happy to shout out about all the great things in Poland....

But the sad truth is....

That among some Poles is this belief that in order to prosper you must take every oportunity to lie and decieve , and stab people in the back at every oportunity... I think its a mentality that comes from years of having to do whatever is needed to survive...

I have Polish friends i would trust with my life , and they are the most wonderfull people i have ever met....

But... it does not blind me to the fact there are those that are not quite so great...

We have such people in the UK too...

Language / Is the term 'Polak' derogatory?? [254]

Unless you are very fluent in Polish , its best not to use the word at all really...

I call my Polish friends Polaks , Buraks and all manner of offensive names , they do the same to me..we are friends and nobody is offended...

I would not use this word among strangers....

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

You are Polish if...

You have never left a supermarket without a few cans of beer... and your car is parked as close as possible to the entrance of the supermarket , causing a traffic jam...

Please, please start on what it is to be English. I have a feeling it will be even funnier;)

Yes , good idea... this would be funny...

You are English if.....

you are fat lazy , have a criminal record and a tattoo of the devil on your face.... but you are out of work because there are lots of Poles in the UK...

and yes...i am English...

Sister act`s story is complete bullshyt. It doesn`t hold water at all for Polish reality, it is pure nonsense with a few factual elements to make it look real.

When i gave an account of my mobile phone being stolen by people at Gdansk airport you said i must have been drunk , or mistaken...

Whilst its very noble and natural to defend your country , calling people liars because they happen to have had something negative happen to them in Poland is not reasonable... How do you know the story is not true...?

I have told many tales of all the great and wonderfull things that have happened to me in Poland , i don,t recall you calling me a liar then....only when i said somebody Polish stole my phone..... Maybe all the nice things i said about Poland were lies...?

Remember...Polish reality is not the same for a non Pole in Poland as it is for a Pole...

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

I agree , but in comparison with the war in Russia , the desert war was played by the rules...

My father tells of how they would fight during the day , then pack up as the sun went down...if you bumped into the enemy at night , you would just pretend not to notice them...

My father said it went downhill after the Americans joined in.... They started firing at the Germans at night , and the Germans naturally responded....

My father was in the tanks... on one operation their tank got hit , several crew wounded , and they were on their own...

A few hours later a German column showed up..they treated all the wounded , gave the English crew food and water , and then went on their way after wishing them luck.... they had no time to take prisoners...

Can,t imagine that scenario in Russia...

German and British etc veterans could easily become friends because, despite being enemies, they had treated each other as equal. Germans didn`t plan to erase the British nation from the surface of the earth. They only wanted to dominate.

I agree , the desert war was very civilised , just opposing forces doing battle , no partisans , no death squads , no Gestapo...

Very different from what was happening in Poland and the rest of Europe...

My father had many friends from the Afrika korps...

Back in 1942 they were doing their best to kill each other...

I agree with what somebody else already said...

Forgive yes... but to forget is to let it happen again...

Travel / Watch out for airport personnel stealing stuff on regional Polish airports. [64]

Had my mobile stolen at Gdansk airport security...

I had two with me , the one they stole was a broken phone that i kept just to charge up a spare battery...bad luck people...

I will keep a closer eye on my stuff in future...

What they did was insist i took my boots off , because the metal dectector bleeped at my metal shoelace ends , while i was doing that , they went through my rucksack and stole the phone...

UK, Ireland / Best way to get boxes from UK to Poland? [25]

Pity.. A few years back i was driving between Leeds and Poland pretty often , i would have moved your stuff for free...

Try contacting the Polish people in the Leeds area , there are lots of them..

You could try the Polish center , or one of the Leeds Polish sites on the net , i have seen a few people advertising removals on there...
