Life / Typical Polish house and family [46]

Do they typically have many computers and electronics? Do they have what the Germans call Rolläden?

Life / Typical Polish house and family [46]

Just cause you don't know the answer doesn't mean you have to get all *****. I asked a serious question, if you didn't know the answer you could've just waited for someone who is smarter to answer. I didn't ask the question to start a stupid fight over the Internet, I just wanted to know the thoughts of the people on this site about my topic.

Genealogy / Possibility and proof of being Tatar [15]

The polish side of my family had mostly dark hair and dark squinty eyes. Most people ask if I'm part Asian and are normally somewhat surprised when I say Polish. I did have a dna test done, it came back mostly Eastern European, but around 1% Asian & Native American. How could I use the 23andme.com to figure if I'm tatar?

I can view and download my raw DNA data to let another source view and analyze it if that could help.

Language / Beginning to learn Polish- help? [29]

I am finally starting to learn Polish after planning to for awhile, but don't know where to start after learning the alphabet. I bought the book Basic Polish A Grammar and Workbook by Dana Bielec, but it's not as thorough as I'd thought. Is there a more in depth version that has nearl every grammatical aspect used in speaking(such as the Hammer's grammar book for German)? And where can you find a good dictionary with a lot of words that have been recently updated?

Genealogy / Duda Family [23]

I had a thread on here awhile ago about the surname Duda, there was some helpful info, but I'd like to learn more. Did it originate for sure in Poland? I've had people ask me if I'm Hungarian, Ukrainian, and Russian because of the name, is it popular in those countries also? And is it related to surnames such as "Dudzinski" or "Dudayev"?

Language / How hard is it to learn Polish? [178]

Merged: Is Polish really that hard?

I have just purchased the book Basic Polish: A Grammar and Workbook by Dana Bielec. From what I've read on here, it is a great book for beginner learners of Polish. I just started it recently, but so far it seems not that much harder learning than German. They both have cases, declensions, and exceptions to rules. I know Polish has more cases than German and completely different declensions and conjugations, but it doesn't seem that much harder, is it just because I'm in the beginning stages of learning?

Genealogy / WWII Veteran information (he moved to America from Poland in 1929) [2]

I recently found out that my great-grandfather was a WWII veteran, presumably after he moved to America from Poland in 1929. I have found out where he was born, his immigration date, death, social security number, and that he served in WWII. I don't know anything about his service during the war, except that he served in it. I would like to find out more about his service during the war, where could I go to help with this?

Merged:Found some pdf Polish grammar books

I have found these 4 pdf grammar books that seem to be of good quality. The first three are all by Oscar E. Swan, but vary in length and the year made. Have any of you heard of him and his pdfs? Are they good for Polish beginners? For example I'm just starting the alphabet and want to get into basic grammar, are these good for that?

Genealogy / Poles born under Russian control - are we Russian? [29]

If the Poles were under Russian control for that long, could someone consider them selves part Russian? Technically it's true, our ancestors were under Russian rule and in a way somewhat citizens.

Language / Occupational first name in Polish? [7]

Thanks, ya I was asking that.

Merged: Name translation "Cooper"

My cousin's name is Cooper. He's on my polish side of the family and I was wondering what his name would be in Polish. I was going to start calling my family members by their polish name(like grandma, grandpa, aunt, uncle, cousins by their name, etc.), but I don't know his in Polish and I haven't found a name that means the same. So what should I call him?

Language / Occupational first name in Polish? [7]

In English when you name someone a occupational name like "Cooper" for their first name it's ok, but would it be normal to be named "Bednarz" in Poland? Or would you be better keeping the pronounciation and spell it in Polish?

I meant lern in the first sentence but I typed it wrong and spell check fixed it. And just cause I wasn't born in Poland doesn't mean I'm not Polish, delphamoine.

Language / Learn Polish or Russian [86]

I really wanna leave Polish because I'm polish, but I feel like it'd only be useful in Polish communities here and Poland, Russian is very useful all over the world and in science, but I'm not Russian. So pretty much I'd rather learn Polish but I'm a little iffy on the decision to.
