News / Will PiS be happy if AfD wins elections in Germany? [112]

left

The Social Democrats are centrist rather than left.

But much better under the Thatcher years..... your point?

It didn't. I remember the length of the dole queues, former steelworkers begging for money, police (and soldiers dressed as police) attacking lawfully picketing miners and in the north east, we're seeing the third generation of dolites.

Plus, in 1979 when the b1tch took office, 40% of people owned some shares and we all owned the water, gas, electric, trains, buses, BP and a few other things. Now 12% of people have shares and the rest have nothing.

UK, Ireland / Better being female in UK or Poland? [15]

Your info is outdated. The last time I saw and heard such a driver was 30 years ago

So perhaps yours is. I saw that last week on Grójecka.

There is less of the girls Vs boys feeling, there is less of relationship drama and silly things (like 'allowing' your partner do something

That's a few interesting points however I'm sure you could find all of that in PL and in large quantities. I'd guess that socioeconomic class has as much (or more) to do with it as cultural differences. Except of course that the U.K. was the first country to industrialise and women have been wage earners for 250 years.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [233]

But is this really happening?

No.

Every time a fat 65 year old dies of a heart qattck or whatever, half of Twitter insists that it's a 'vaccine-related' death.

As if nobody got ill before.

News / Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 10 [2616]

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu claimed

A paid liar.

You come to PolishForums, and tell Poles that Katyn was done by the fascists.

There are people that pop up here to say that the chemical weapons attacvk in Salisbury was a 'false flag' operation.

Ukraine is getting a whole bunch of weapons before the end of the week now

And very good too.

not the case in Germany.

Look at some of their policies. Centre-right or centrist.

Perhaps the Overton Window shifted there during the conservative Merkel years.

About Germany; adding East Germany to the BDR still seems to affect voting patterns. In the UK people are looking forward to seeing the Tories wiped out for a generation; all polls suggest that they'll suffer their worst loss in political history.

News / Coronavirus in Poland - part 2 [233]

people caught on and refused to take them.

Most people have been responsible and followed their health service's advice regarding the recent pandemic.

a compromised immune system like you

A weird thing to write.

Almost as weird as spooling out negative and irresponsible crap about lifesaving medicine like the sicko that you are.

News / Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 10 [2616]

The proper spelling is

neighbour in Europe. Which Poland is and r*SSia partly is. In fact it is correct everywhere outside one particular region.

What if Ukraine attacks with 3,000 drones at once?

That might well happen; the technology around drone swarms is growing fast and r*SSia do not have it.

Imagine if Ukraine send a swarm of 10,000.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2810]

If cops have a reason to have guns, you have a reason to have a gun.

Weird logic.

In Sydney, they chose not to defend themselves and they are dead now.

Your adopted country is awash with guns yet it still has the highest murder rate in the developed world.

Rubbish.

And you had all vaccinations yourself. Pull yourself together and try not to be such a jerk.

More rubbish.

News / Poland`s aid to Ukraine if Russia invades - part 10 [2616]

Far left CNN

It isn't 'far left'. It's centrist at best.

and not enough

Cut out the fake concern. President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian Armed Forces have first class strategic and tactical advice.

- you accept that the state and Putler are the same thing.

They are to all intents and purposes. L'etat, c'est lui.

UK, Ireland / English/British rudeness - what do Polish people think about it? [117]

@Alien

OK, why not...

went out centuries ago! Yes, there are some vestiges of it in some Northern dialect

More than vestiges. Plenty of people use it many times daily as a matter of course. I grew up using it and that certainly wasn't centuries ago.

I don't find English rude at all.

I find southerners colder than northerners.

Not a problem when the bus is empty, but some people take the inward seat rather then the one next to the window

That's very very Polish. More so than English.

Germans.....more rude than polite

The rudest people I've come across are probably Berliners.

Life / Examples of popular Polish music? [995]

@Korvinus
Opera does work well with a modern updated libretto. Do you know the 90s filmed version of Marschner's Vampire? Dated now but well worth it.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [263]

spelling mistake

The phonetics are very wrong. Should be /ˈlɛtɪs/ although schwa is also acceptable for the second vowel albeit rare.

Travel / Poland in photo riddles - part 3 [263]

This is primary aka elementary school,

We learnt the phonetic alpahbet (or a version of it) in the first year of primary school, aged 4/5.

Letys

That's how I'd do it for a Polish learner.

Leer is of course a word, and that's the only mistake in English, apart from in vegetables and it looks like they've corrected it. In any case, b can be written with an open loop and that would bre consistent with the way the kid writes p. Old-fashioned though. And wieprzowina is clumsily written but fine for a primary age kid.

I don't see anything major.

leer yourself and still can`t see the mistake?

Could read leer or equally beer which would be consistent with the poor and outdated style of handwriting.

Law / The right to own guns: would you support such legislation in Poland? [2810]

tore the safe with a hunting gun off the wall and took out the whole thing

Quite.

Some of the posters from one particular country think that if more people had guns then they could stop violent crime.

Yet in that country they have 120 guns per 100 people and it doesn't stop violent crime at all; in fact they very obviously have none of the highest rates of gun crime in the world.

The bad guys are better at using them and have the element of surprise.

UK, Ireland / "Strange " English language.. [81]

the delight in the Upper Crust pronunciation, sadly so
connected with Britain's truly stifling class system, has all but disappeared

It's certainly not truly stifling and I'd say that we're one of the most democratic and egalitarian societies in the world (foreigners may drool over Downton Abbey which is just lowbrow fiction) however it's worth mentioning that the old RP accent was always that of a tiny minority.

West End fops, braggarts, and assorted eccentric types once roamed when I was there as a teen

It's not a tourist attraction (well, not only) however back in the day it was extremely seedy and most Londoners are pleased to see prostitution, gambling dens, alcoholics, clip joints, pórn shops, gangsters and panhandlers replaced by classier shops and bars, nice restaurants and good flats. It's a shame about some of the traditional cafes and restaurants that have been priced out of the market however there are still some of you know where to look.

quote=pawian]I am still in a deep state of shock after the leek riddle[/quote]
To be fair, Paw, it doesn't look much like "leek" and wasn't much of a riddle.

Then again, life is butter melon cauliflower.

Language / Extremely Hard - Polish the hardest language to learn [226]

perhaps not!

I'm not sure why you say that. Some societies have had this for a li g time and don't get stressed about it.

sexes, biological and immutable.

More "currently unchangeable" for Homo Sapiens though as science develops that is unlikely always to be the case.

And yes, for certain other species of mammal sex can and does change.

Gender is a social construct and varies hugely between societies. Our Neanderthal ancestors, BTW, appear to have had few or no differences between gender roles.

was supposed to be leek

It doesn't look like leek. That isn't a K.

where's the h in whale

Silent since about 1870 and never universal. Queen Victoria did pronounce the silent h after w however she was brought up in deliberate isolation by her German mother and German servants.

I would take issue with some of the pronunciations

Me too. The phonetics for rabbit are just plain wrong.

UK, Ireland / English/British rudeness - what do Polish people think about it? [117]

Old people are afraid that they will not be able to get out from window seat

It's mostly not older people. That stampede on public transport that happens in Warsaw (the Moscow crush) is spectacular. And rude.

The nicest and most polite group I've met

Berliners? They're famous within Germany for being brusque. Different if you know them personally of course however I'm thinking of people in shops etc. When I visit friends in Berlin they are friendly. In shops or in public places I've found real rudeness and when there generally prefer to deal with Germans of Turkish heritage.

pre-Brexit

Brexit changed nothing about that however, yes, the attitude towards mainland Europe has traditionally involved a certain disdain. In large part due to their habit of dragging us into wars. That and the garlic.

It's more like Monday evening where I am right now. The working week goes from Sunday to Thursday and nobody works much after 2pm.
