Language / "Hilarious" Mistakes? (Esp. Across Polish and other Slavic Languages) [74]

This is the sort trouble you will find when you learn without a good grammar book

Hi pam et al

Don't be disheartened. It sounds as though you know quite a bit of the language already.

As I have mentioned in a previous post, I use three books:

1. Hurra!!! Po Polsku - Malgorzata MaƂolepsza and Aneta Szymkiewicz.
2. Polish Verbs & Essentials of Grammar - Oscar E. Swan.
3. Basic Polish - Dana Bielec.

They are excellent books - the third is a bit heavy and there is quite a lot of grammar rules, but unforutunately is just boils down the learning it. In the book by Oscar Swan, he has compiled very useful lists of vocabulary - i am learning roughly 10 words a day... at the minute adverbs...

Goodness gracious me! That's quite a list! Are there similarities between Polish and Czech?

I'm just interested in what other lanuages people out there know or are familiar with? Of course there will be Polish and English. Can anyone add any others to the list?

Myself = French, German, Russian, Japanese, Irish Gaelic and Polish.... ALL AT BASIC LEVEL I MIGHT ADD!

As I grow older, my language interests deepen...

Language / Polish grammar made easy [23]

you can't make Polish grammar easy

Well said. As a learner of Polish it is a very difficult language, but maybe because I'm new to it. For my perspective I have to learn through examples AND using textbooks. I was going to my Polish mate's house and wanted to say 'I am on the bus'. Texted 'Jestem na autobusem'.... What I should have said was

'Jestem w autobusie'. I'd used the instrumental case, rather than the locative case! This, only a small, example helped a great deal.

Personally I learn through as many examples as possible. Coming here is an invaluable boost!
