Language / Do I have these Polish word cases right? [16]

Hi gumishu et al.,

I'm busy learning loads of vocabulary for GCSE Polish. The only way I am (slowly) learning my case endings is by talking to natives. I'm currently buying a new house and have been trying to say 'I will get the keys on the 29 February'

I sort of managed to say it in Polish: 'Będę dostawał klucze od dwudziesty dzięwąty luty'

I was quickly corrected: 'luty' should be 'lutego' as it has to agree with the number 29th.. i think... AND, rather than 'bede dostawal' it should be 'dostanę'

I'm a tad confused as to why I can't say 'Bede dostawal' (i will get)... I was referring to my 301 verbs book and gathered this was correct - maybe I was wrong as this is in the Imperfective case?

Don't be disheartened. It sounds as though you know quite a bit of the language already.

As I have mentioned in a previous post, I use three books:

1. Hurra!!! Po Polsku - Malgorzata Małolepsza and Aneta Szymkiewicz.
2. Polish Verbs & Essentials of Grammar - Oscar E. Swan.
3. Basic Polish - Dana Bielec.

They are excellent books - the third is a bit heavy and there is quite a lot of grammar rules, but unforutunately is just boils down the learning it. In the book by Oscar Swan, he has compiled very useful lists of vocabulary - i am learning roughly 10 words a day... at the minute adverbs...

I do have the luxury of 'speaking' to various polish people. I go to Polish mass and talk to parishioners, and have several Polish work colleagues who guide me along the way. I don't mind speaking at all.

I've asked for the time hundreds of times, and it's given in the 12-hour system 99% of the time. The 24-hour clock is usually given in conjunction with transport times, eg British Rail, bus or coach times - this needs to be done to avoid problems... Does the bus leave at 8? Is that 8 am or 8 pm?

... From books and other written material ... I have a method where I write down a new word 5 times. This method is working great with Polish adverbs, comparative and superlatives included ....

I had a polish mate learning English. When encountering it for the first time, he imagined the word written down on paper, and it stuck! Lucky him.

I think one of my errors has reared its ugly head reading the latter posts. I thought for example 'I went to London' was 'Byłem do Londonie'.

I was also using the word 'bylem' interchangably to mean 'I went ...' and 'I was...'.

Is this correct for both meanings?

It's 'masculine' I think, and the Genitive 'Gdanska' does fit the pattern. :-/

... ok I'm gonna have a try and see why it is infact 'GdanskA'. Is is cos Gdansk is a neuter noun and in the Genitive, therefore an -a ending?

Hi Dysydent miodek. You may have seen my posts relating to Polish grammar. There are a couple of good sites which give a brief overview of grammar:

I'm also using a great book 'Hurra!!! Po Polsku 1'. This introduces the cases one by one, and it's been a godsend to me.

Real Estate / Landlords and flat owners in Poland - how do you choose your tenants? [5]


Hi there.
I wouldn't ask for their income. I know you need to know if they'll be able to pay their rent etc, but imagine if you went to see a flat and the landlord asked you for your income details. Would you disclose this to them? In my opinion, you could ask them.

1. Is their job permanent or temporary?
2. How long do they want their tenancy for?
3. Why did they leave their previous flat/house?
4. Get a couple of references from them.

I know these questions may seem a little intrusive, but at the end of the day, you do want a tenant who will pay their way and for you to have peace of mind.

I really don't know, but that seems to be the case! Perhaps it's one exam that they'll excel at (grade A, A*) and a good grade may help them integrate into the education system, knowing they've done well in an English-based qualification. Maybe...

It sounds as if you'd walk the exam pam - why not give it a try? I've been reading a few reports on GCSE exams. Roughly 70% of students are Polish kids who have just moved over here - they pass with flying colours! Only a minority of students are English nationals.

I am learning from 3 books: Not in any particular order

1. Basic Polish: A grammar and Workbook - Dana Bielec.
2. Polish Verbs and Essentials of Grammar - Oscar E. Swan.
3. Hurra!!! Po Polsku 1 - Agnieszka Burkat.
4. 301 Polish Verbs - Klara Janecki

I'm also doing a lot of searching out on the internet and using Google Translate. It is a bit hard using the Hurra book since it's all in Polish, but you can get the gist of what it's asking.

GCSE Polish - I live in the North West, but have to travel down to London and will sit the exam in the Polish Centre in Hammersmith. It was a choice of Oxford College in Oxford, or the London place. No schools whatsoever would accept me as an external candidate, and have had to contact AQA several times to seek confirmation regarding the syllabus etc. Anyway, I will plump for the Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing parts in April and May 2012.

I was like you Pam - until a few months ago I hadn't heard of most of the cases. I'd heard of a few of them from Latin. I felt I had at least to become familiar with them to learn noun, adjective, number endings. I need this for my GCSE in April/May. Each has their own method - mine is through books and rote learning - perhaps not the best way to learn, but it words very well for me. You may learn better in conversation. The book Hura!! etc, in my opinion is the best one around. It starts by introducing the Instrumental case first and recaps subsequent cases as you progress through the book. The only snag about it is that it's all in Polish; not an English word in sight. I do have many Polish friends who can interpret any difficult words/questions. And of course through this forum! Coming here has been a lifeline.

Could anyone check these verbs... I have to conjugate correctly....

To begin with [verb] and then later [verb]

(Does najpierw translate as 'firstly' or 'to begin with'?) (a co potem = and then later?)

"Co robimy najpierw, a co potem?"

Przyklad: (ja) / wstawać / budzić się
Najpierw budzę sie, a potem wstaję.

1. on / myć zęby / wstawać
Najpierw wstaja, a potem myje zęby.

2. (ja) / isć do pracy / ubierać się.
Najpierw ubieram a potem idę do pracy.

3. oni / robić zakupy / isc na spacer.
Najpierw robia zakupy a potem idą do sklepu.
