Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4501]

Sorry, I'm doing the best I can from 1892 and 1898 U.S.Catholic church records microfilmed by the Latter Day Saints. On the 1892 child's marriage record it looks like "Lotorn, Garhowo" as place of birth and on the other Lokotowo, Poland. Both are VERY difficult to read due to the penmanship and age of the record being microfilmed. I do know for sure the last place they resided in before coming to the U.S. in Pomerania.

Just trying to find more information as I don't speak/read/write Polish. Sorry if I offended you.

Genealogy / THE MEANING AND RESEARCH OF MY POLISH LAST NAME, SURNAME? [4501]

Does anyone have any ideas about the last names Trojanowska and Kantorski? I think they came from a small village named Lo Kotowo (spelling?) in Pomerania. Having difficulty finding any information on the names and consistent information about the village so I can trace to a parish (Catholic).

Thank you all!

Genealogy / DOBZYN, PLOCK ? Need more information [15]

Thank you so much for the information! So Dobrzyn nad Wisla is probably not the one he was born in even though it is only 32 km from Plock? The one you think is the most realistic is probably the one as my grandfather stated on many documents that he was born in "Russia" and you state that Golub-Dobrzyn used to be part of the Russian Plock Province about that time. How does Pomerania figure in? My great-grandmother stated on her emigration docs that the last place the family lived was "Pomerania". That would have been in 1885.

How do I do further research on any Catholic church records from Golub-Dobrzyn? I'm not finding anything on familysearch.org nor ancestry.com for this family.

Thank you so much!
Yeah, my computer crashed on the site you mentioned too!

Genealogy / DOBZYN, PLOCK ? Need more information [15]

Just learned that my great-grandfather was born in Dobzen, Plock. Can anyone enlighten me? I know that Plock is a city but I don't know about Dobzen. Any ideas about how to do further research? He was born on 3/29/1873. I am uncertain about his religion. He died in the United States as a Catholic but I think only because he married my great-grandmother who was a devout Catholic whose ancestors were from Poland but I don't know where in Poland and have been unable to find out.

Thanks! I love this forum.

Genealogy / Looking for information on Bonk family that settled in Washington County, Illinois [8]

On the ship's passenger list from Hamburg to Quebec, he spelled his last name "Bonk" so I'm assuming this is what he and his brother used in the old country. However, when his first wife, Joanna Musial passed away in Washington County, the name on her tombstone is Joanna "Bak" while later on Bart's it is "Bonk" which I found interesting.

Genealogy / Looking for information on Bonk family that settled in Washington County, Illinois [8]

Looking for information on Bartholomew (or Martin) and Franz Bonk . They bought land in DuBois township,,Washington County, Illinois (near Radom and Posen) approximately 1879. Bartholomew married (Jo)anna Musial and they had twin daughters, Eva and Thecla born Sep 1877 and they were baptized at St Michael the Archangel Church in Radom. Looking for more info on this family .........I think Bartholomew emigrated from Hamburg to Quebec but the passenger list does not state where he was born. Also, looking for more info on Eva and Thecla (Tekla) and (Jo)anna Musial.

Washington County is still very rural and it is difficult to find records even from Illinois Archives.
I believe that Bart and Joanna had four other children before she died in 1882. Bart remarried 11/1883 in another county.

Life / Injection Moulding in Poland [21]

Are molding foundries mostly located in a particular area of Poland? My grandfather emigrated from Poland and his first job in the US was as a stove molder in Belleville, Il.. Just wondering if he had experience in Poland and it would give me a clue as to his origins. His brother became a coal miner in the Belleville area.
