UK, Ireland / Limit on quantity of cigarettes brought back from Poland to Ireland? [3]

quick question guys,

i always thought that the limit of cigarettes you could take from Poland to Ireland was 200, but a friend of mine is trying to convince me that there is no limit because of the fact that Poland is a member of the EU, and the fact that you've already paid tax on them. what's the story with it???

thanks

(fairly tipsy, got a bargain on a bottle of Bushmills earlier :))

Life / "Letter from Poland" - very important movie to watch [51]

Does the film contain scenes of how a drunken general seized command of a plane?

Is that true???? I haven't read much about this crash.....

Also, what's this I hear about the guy who filmed the plane just after it crashed? Something like there was gunfire heard on his video, and recently he died in suspicious circumstances?

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

Too obscene to translate...

haha cool i'll wait for herself to get home from work :)

on a slightly different note, about 3 years ago when i started seeing my girl, she asked me to read "oczywiscie", which (as i'd had zero experience of reading polish) i pronounced as OK-SEE-WHY-SKI. now whenever we're in a conversation with other people about me learning Polish this story is ALWAYS brought up :)

Also, just thought i'd share this - I have awful trouble saying "do you want another drink" (ja wannanudder drink) after only 2-3 drinks

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

but what I mean is, this girl found the word chimney funny only because she found it funny to hear and say it, not because it sounded similar to some polish words.

A Pole years ago told me never to say "Tea? Who you, yer bunny?" With good reason.

What does this mean?

There's also a good reason why Polish people find the English word cheaper quite funny..

Why's that?

(Sorry, my Polish is still at the horrendous stage)

Language / Polish words that sound funny? [224]

I was recently talking to a (Polish) girl in work and somehow the word "chimney" came into the conversation, at which point she started laughing, because it sounds "funny". Anybody have any words they thought sounded funny when they were/are learning english/polish? For me, I always thought "chciałbym" sounded funny. Dunno why.

Travel / Renting a car in Bydgoszcz? [3]

hey guys, has anyone rented a car in Bydgoszcz? My fiance is from there and we're going there in August for two and a half weeks. In the past we've used the public transport and relied on her father for getting around, but it would be nice to be more independent this time. And also, I was thinking that maybe it would work out cheaper if I just bought a second hand car over there to use for when we're in Bydgoszcz? What's car insurance like in Poland? And any websites I could check???

Any advice is much appreciated.

P.s. I'm just new to PF but I love it already, I spent last night reading many an interesting post!
