Life / Why Polish people should be proud of being Polish? [370]

Few loose thoughts, which popped my mind while reading this, are:

1. Oh tell us why in Kaczyland few years ago we old continental Poles were uncreative as well??
2. The last traditional Polish thing which hit the world was footbag 7 years ago ;)
3. Could you name few things which Poland in e.g. 1930s "gave" to the world?
4. You've probably another American who thinks that our grandmathers were wearing folk dresses, lol.
5. Yep, probably Poles are inferior to other cultures... Let's plead to ban all bungee, skateboarding, breakdancing, kebabs and KFCs and let's all eat pierogis and play palant (Polish cricket) instead ;DDD

Polonius tell us how would you imagine perfect Poland (I mean way of living). What people should do in their free time in your perfect Poland? Pray?? ;D

Although they are no longer Swedish owned, the Volvo and Saab marques are still associated with Swedish engineering.

We would have our own famous products (not necessarily cars) but the rapid privatisation and racy inflation of the break of 80/90s killed whole Polish industry.

You have a serious case of needing to get over yourself. The only reason you come out with all this pish is down to the fact you want Poland to still be like it was when you last visited, some 20 odd years ago.

Do you really think that he has ever visited Poland? What is more - do you really belive that Poland was ever like he describes her?? O_o

Polonius3

What a bs you write! You don't know anything about Poland. Please stop that nonsense...

To others: How about not wasting your time for pointless and not down-to-earth discussions? Why to feed troll?

I'm actually convinced that the Poland that the Polish-Americans and Kaczynskites see isn't the real Poland at all. All this talk of doom and gloom - where? Young people here seem remarkably upbeat and positive.

I'm young and I'm downbeat and negative :)

Polish and proud?

Should be rather Polish and ashamed.
There are many things in Poland which I don't like as well as many young people don't.
Note that "glorious history" of Poland is a matter of past and the thing which people should be proud of are the modern times... but I don't see many things to be proud of in modern times.

- schools sucks
- culture sucks
- quality of life sucks
- politics sucks

More I'm older more I'm dissapointed.

For instance I hate that there were no president of modern Poland that would not make an embarassing bloop.

Love / Nature of Poles - the relationship of Polish families [7]

Is being secretive or clannish just a trait of Polish people in general?

No. It's individual trait of abused families. It means that something bad happened in your family and no one want to speak about it loudly.

UK, Ireland / Estimated number of Poles in Ireland thought to exceed 200,000 OR over 5% of population. [200]

but i remember on RTE back in 2005, a member of the audience put the following question to the panel.."with the large influx of Eastern Europeans into Ireland;could this mean, by about 2030, we could be considered a 'good looking people?'". The panel of conservative politicians looked a little shocked..LOL

Can I watch it somewhere? ;D

News / Polish teenager gives birth live on British TV [15]

It might be better if you don't speak Polish, as you don't want to hear the "colourful" language they speak.

There are subtitles.
Oh she just used few k-words, no big deal... I felt really sorry to see how much she suffers.

Not even 10 years ago it would've been branded scandalous,

not even the graphic images of child birth

Just look what things were shown 82 years ago:
youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=IvDEPq2rBaQ
move to 2:40

but the type of people who come over to the UK to breed.

Don't be a facist. You don't know those people and their story.

Listen Ironside - I'm done with this discussion. You are talking through your arse and expecting definitions of "unique cultures" when you can't even do so yourself.

IS is just teasing you and you all took it too serious. But now you see how an ordinary Polish born PF user feel when need to repell stupid statments about Poland. It's like discussing with Harry, he always wants stupis proofs for obvious things...

Who? when? where?

I remember that someone was saying that Poles don't have own culture because everything which Poles consider as their own unique culture is more or less simillar with culture/traditions of other Central and Eastern European countries.

I don't remember who said it. Maybe Delphi, maybe Harry, maybe Fuzzy...

Law / Question about the drinking laws of Poland. [45]

On the other hand an adult who is drinking with teenager can be accused of demoralisation.

exactly.

Imagine that in the USA they would be shocked that 17 year old can drink and it's acceptable...

Law / Question about the drinking laws of Poland. [45]

At 17 she is well old enough to decide for herself if she wants to drink alcohol , and who she wants to drink it with...

In Poland she is not and I'm not sure if giving/proposing an alcohol to unadult is not a law offend.
There is a right in Poland that person under 18 is not allowed to drink alcohol and everyone should stick to it. It's not GB where the drinking age is 16... It's just about abiding the law.

UK, Ireland / Estimated number of Poles in Ireland thought to exceed 200,000 OR over 5% of population. [200]

Put it this way, can you tell me briefly and clearly about "Polish culture" ?

Poles are cunning. They value something which is called cwaniactwo (street smartness, slyness). They are brought up by the school with the romantic idea of patriotism but grow up to be oppostunists as this is what they are taught at homes. In Poland ethics and competence is not a merit. People just look on achievements, rarely on a way of achieving. They are completely mistrustful to each other. They see a trap and a trick everywhere. They are not willing to congregate for a greater aim. They are passive and look for other to fight for their rights. They rarely smile

It's quite sad but this is the way I see Poles and I guess many of mt fellow countrymen will agree with me.

I also accept the right of Poles not to be considered German : )

Actually I would really enjoy if some people said that Poles are like Germans. Germans bring positive associations while Poles not necessarly.

a different language

Btw. do Irish speaks Irish on daily basis?

Does she ?
like what ?

Some call it whiskey, some call it whisky ;)

But being serious now Irish culture is pretty distinguish and I wouldn't mix up it with British.

Language / Napić się kieliszek koniaku [25]

Or wiater, like sweter :)

That one I also never heard...
I'm from central Poland.

What about chłopaki and chłopacy? Is it true that both words are correct?

Language / Napić się kieliszek koniaku [25]

Anyway, Google has seen weirdest forms and usages, which nevertheless doesn't make them all correct or even remotely acceptable.

There are other examples. I just wanna show that such mistakes are quite frequent. I heard it many times that's why I memorized wrong grammar form.

When there was a tvp kultura short animated movies series about common Polish language mistakes there was an example with sweter that people allegedly say "swetr"... I never heard anyone to say "swetr". So maybe it works this way that in some regions somemistakes are more frequent than in other? How do you think?

Adam Mickiewicz

Lithuanians call him: Adomas Mickevièius. But maybe... I don't know. What I heard is that wicz names are surnames given to Ormians who settled on Polish territories.

Language / Napić się kieliszek koniaku [25]

Could it be regional?

maybe...

Unless you mean negative sentences, then it's ok - nie napijesz się szklanki mleka.

Shouldn't it be "nie napijesz się szklankę mleka?"

"Napiję się kieliszka" sounds as if kieliszek were the liquid you want to drink.

So in negative we drink the glass? ;)

Language / Napić się kieliszek koniaku [25]

"Napiję się kieliszka" sounds as if kieliszek were the liquid you want to drink. Really terrible!

ok. but napiję się kieliszek wódki sounds also weird.

You will see many mistakes made by Poles which are a result of wide spread for years errors which found their place in colloquial language and are well rooted there.

That should be applied then to "kieliszka case" because I've checked in google and many people write kieliszka as well as kieliszek. Strzyga is right - her justification sounds really logical. Still I hear more times szklanki, kieliszka if used in such sentence than szklankę mleka:

- napiłam się szklanki ciepłego mleka z miodem
rather than:
- napiłam się szklankę ciepłego mleka z miodem

So as you see even Poles make gramatical mistakes ;)

"to co..napijemy się kieliszeczek naleweczki?"

That sentence sounds ok in colloquial language but is grammatically uncorrect. You will see many mistakes made by Poles which are a result of wide spread for years errors which found their place in colloquial language and are well rooted there.

But it's still weird that she told you that "napiję się kieliszek" is correct - it really jars on the ears...

wypiję kieliszek koniaku
napiję się kieliszka koniaku
wypiję filiżankę kawy
napiję się filiżanki kawy

if in your book is napiję się kieliszek koniaku then there is a mistake your book.
