Life / Poles - what other nationality would you say you are most like? [125]

Don't compare the Irish always with us Poles,

You don't find any similarities apart from the drinking?

I'm surprsed as it is a comparison I hear regularly - from Poles too I should add.

What if you exclude Slavic countries?

UK, Ireland / Common pitfalls for Poles learning English [187]

It says - as I understand it - that "do you have" is neutral, whereas "have you got" may be emotionally-stricken.

Yes, and a good way of putting it. Although I stress that it's my understanding/feeling about it. It's not always 100% clear with English - the language is just too flexible and accomodating sometimes ; )

But from a certain point of view, this "entrance door" is quite a specific one - "the only one", if I may quote you - it it is the entrance door of the house to which my friend was searching the key for.

Sorry, you are correct really. The syntax of your original post didn't make it initially obvious to me.

In front of the entrance door to their house, should I ask my companion, the owner of the house, who is nervously seeking something, presumably the key, in every one of his pockets

This would be more normal maybe. Other alternatives too of course but either way, the connection of the door to the house, to make it specific, should be made at the earliest opportunity.

By the way, your English is very good.

History / No Nazi puppet regime in Poland? [45]

Meaning it was, as a country, sacrificed, crucified etc.

Probably not that everyone has a beard and likes turning their cheeks to get them slapped for example.

Life / Disco Polo - No No No No No! [95]

Just had a listen. Probably what we would call "euphoric dance" I guess?

It's awful but as f stop says, certainly not a uniquely Polish form of awful.

If there is indeed a backlash to this in Poland, well done on your taste Poland I say!

I'd like to think we're like the French, but unfortunately we're too polite...

Ha ha - no, not the French at all. At least not in my opinion.

If anyone, I'd say the Germans - although I've a sneaking suspicion that not too many people from either country would agree.

But of course that's only because they can't see the wood for the trees.

: )

By the way I'm talking really the English here rather than the British as such.

overall greatness

LOL - I love this by the way!

Do Germans have any sentiment for Hungarians? And vice versa?

This cannot be answered unfortunately.

Apparently, there is no recorded example in the world of anyone having met a Hungarian.

The CIA are currently carrying out an investigation to ascertain whether or not the so-called country of Hungary actually exists.

They sound familar mafketis.

By the way, do the teachers on here provide cultural advice too? Conventions re etiquette/customs etc? I do as some of the subtle differences can be confusing & surprising.

E.g. a woman I know answers the phone as part of her job - she mentioned that it drove her mad having to ask who was calling. She considered it impolite or very casual of the caller not to say in the first place - I had to explain that the norm (at least here) is:

Hello can I speak to mr X?

Can I ask who is calling?

It's Mr Y from Z company

One moment please

She found this a bit unusual.

Love / Unmarried couples in Poland = pathology [310]

Wow.

Spoke to a Polish friend about this - she said with a wry slightly embarrassed smile that it was possible to get around this requirement.

I didn't pursue it as with her being a fairly staunch catholic and me agnostic, it was bound to end in an argument.

UK, Ireland / English Films..What Do Poles Think of Them? [33]

You have to look at the bigger picture with the music though Sid - not just the last 15 years or so!

IMO England really excels at two particular type of comedy - the surreal (From Goons & Python via young ones & Not the Nine O'clock News right through to Spaced & Peep show) & the grotesque/cringeworthy (Alf Garnet through Basil Fawlty & Rigby to Alan Partridge & David Brent)

Life / Vasectomy in Poland is illegal? Why? [123]

We are not discussing religion here, sean but polish law

Yes, but in this case, very closely related.

The catholic church is very influential in Poland is it not?

I don't think it's a coincidence that the countries with the strictest laws on abortion in Europe are also the "most catholic" (Poland, Malta, Ireland, Spain)

News / Poles DO return to the UK [39]

Get out of the EU than. But could Poland govern itself without supervision by the EU?

Less to do with governance than a helping financial hand.

Like big beneficiaries before them (most notably Ireland) there is no way, now that they are knee deep in the various funds available to them, that Poland would ever leave the EU without being forcibly kicked out.

Life / Vasectomy in Poland is illegal? Why? [123]

Do you have any prooves that vasectomy legal status was influenced on church in any way???

No, but if it is indeed illegal I'm struggling to think who would benefit except the church.

Surely there are plenty of things that could be regarded as self mutilating or whatever - e.g. ridiculous breast enlargement or bizarre piercings etc - which I assumme aren't illegal?

Could you read the rest?

Just have. Ok, it's not illegal but still you must "have children".

This reeks of nanny type moral superiority and condescension to me and, yes, has the smell of the church about it.

It was also set against those doctors who were sterilizing lower class women without their knoledge as they stated they know what is better for those women and society.

Ok well at least I was half right then...

This reeks of nanny type moral superiority and condescension

Life / How Long Before Poland Has Its 'Dumbest Generation'? [84]

For example what would have Einstein been without an IQ of 142?

Really? Well that then makes a mockery of the whole thing as far as I can see.

The results of a MENSA IQ test that I took a few years back advised that my IQ was 148.

OK, I'm not stupid but let me tell you, I am definitely no Einstein.

News / Tusk cracks down on designer drugs ("dopalacze") in Poland [171]

Hadn't heard the term smart shop before - if it's the same as 'head shop' which is what they were known as in Ireland (we sell 'legal highs', herbal stuff, strange pills that haven't just been banned in this jurisdiction yet, smoking parephenalia etc) then that particular niche has recently been extinguished as these shops were banned here in recent months.

However, they were pretty popular.

@Teffle Ahh, I see what you mean, I thought you meant slightly more serious stuff

Well it depends what you mean. Some of the stuff in the Head Shops here was serious enough - BZP etc.

Although still not entirely sure that head shop = smart shop - but it seems to.

Blackadder, a small gem, a bit sentimental.

Don't understand this - are you maybe referring to series 4, the one set during WW1? If so, there was a certian poignancy to the end, yes, but in general Blackadder wasn't sentimental at all really?!

Benny Hill, hm... more like German...

Personally, I hated it. He probably had as many critics as fans and I can understand the German comparison. Still, for basic slapstick even if it isn't at all clever, the English still managed to create almost a blueprint with Benny!

On what legal grounds were the Irish smart shops banned?

Sorry, to be accurate it's not that the shops were banned but the substances in them

Here is the story anyway:

News / Polish IQ ahead of France, USA, Canada, Israel, Ireland... [47]

Why then does Poland lag in terms of scientific breakthroughs, inventions, innovative products, cultural trends, fads, crazes, etc.?

Probably because the list is largely a load of donkey vomit.

By the same token: Ireland last?

When it is one of the highest ranked per capita nobel winners in the world & has contributed in science, the arts and literature to an extent greatly disproportionate to its population.

Just like in Poland. But they uses new subsatnces now. That's the trick.

As far as I remember this is what happened here too for a while but because shops kept getting raided, the shop owners just gave up in the end.

I guess the biggest issue for me (and for any users) of all this stuff is the lack of regulation.

Regardless of the supposed potency (or lack of it) or any other undesired reactions, none of this stuff has been tested and it's not goverend by any legislation. Basically, you could be consuming/smoking ANYTHING.

At least with good old fashioned street drugs it was your call, your funeral - they were illegal anyway. But it makes no sense for something to be allowed to be sold but with complete lack of regulation.

I know they get around this sometimes by claiming that it's "not for human consumption" or whatever but it's still grossly irresponsible. It's a bit like the alcopops marketing mentality to me. "Not our fault kids like the taste"
